Background / History

Hela was Odin’s eldest daughter and his foremost conqueror during Asgard’s expansion across the Nine Realms. She led the Death Legion from the front, conquered opposing forces through overwhelming violence, and regarded the Nine Realms as only the first stage of a campaign to make Asgard the supreme power in the universe. Odin originally considered her his successor; her power surpassed both Thor and Loki’s. 105

When Odin abandoned conquest and declared Asgard a merciful kingdom, Hela viewed the change as cowardice and betrayal. Believing herself to be the only ruler capable of leading Asgard, she demanded the throne and rebelled with the Death Legion. The Asgardians refused to support her, Odin defeated her, and she was imprisoned. After a later escape attempt, she destroyed the Valkyrie Corps before Odin sealed her in a barren dimensional prison. Centuries of isolation intensified her hatred, instability, and obsession with conquest. 106 107

Ke Chen encountered Hela in the prison dimension, where she was badly weakened by separation from Asgard. Their first meeting became a prolonged battle: Hela repeatedly refused to submit despite being outmatched, while Ke Chen discovered that she was the dimension’s key. Hela ultimately accepted an alliance based on shared ambitions to reclaim Asgard, though Ke Chen concealed the truth about the key and became the dimension’s master himself. 103 109

After returning to Asgard, Hela agreed—under Ke Chen’s influence—to seek the throne through rule rather than indiscriminate destruction. Her return nevertheless frightened the older Asgardians, who remembered the Nine Realms conquests and the Death Legion. 210 214
