Background

Exile to Earth

Thor’s attack on Jotunheim convinced Odin that he was unfit to rule. Odin sealed Thor’s divine power, enchanted Mjolnir so that only the worthy could lift it, and exiled him to Earth as a mortal 191.

In New Mexico, Thor failed to lift Mjolnir and was detained by S.H.I.E.L.D., who dismissed his claims to be the God of Thunder. Loki then deceived him into believing Odin had died because of Thor’s actions, deepening his despair 194.

Thor regained Mjolnir and his powers while charging Loki’s Destroyer Armor to protect his companions. He returned to Asgard afterward, unaware that Sif had been left behind on Earth 200.

Hela and the Asgardian succession

Ke Chen revealed that Thor had an older sister, Hela, the Goddess of Death. Odin confirmed Hela’s existence after Thor returned to Asgard 194 202.

Thor eventually relinquished the throne as Surtur attacked Asgard. He nevertheless joined Hela in defending the realm, using Stormbreaker and lightning against the Fire Giant 434.

When Gorr the God Butcher emerged, Thor recognized that he could not defeat the Necrosword wielder alone. He sought cooperation among the gods, while privately prioritizing Asgard’s survival over the other pantheons 466.
