The weasel leaped into the air, hanging suspended as it dodged the attack.
Targets in midair were easiest to knock away, yet when the spear swept toward it, it somehow paused in the air and dodged, shooting straight at Gao Fei's face.
In a single move, the saber was pressed into the spear's range.
With no other choice, Gao Fei twirled his spear in a flourish as he retreated again and again.
Returning Horse Spear.
When he turned back, the spear thrust had missed. The weasel stood on one foot atop the spear tip, its body slightly crouched.
A tremendous force came through the spear tip, smashing it viciously toward the ground.
The spearhead sank into the earth, and the weasel raced along the shaft toward the hands gripping it.
Gao Fei reacted in time, stepping back and releasing the spear.
He drew his saber with a backhand motion and chopped down along the spear shaft.
"Clang!"
The two blades collided, and the weasel was sent flying back to the spear tip.
That strike gave Gao Fei hope: it lacked nothing in technique, but he held the advantage in strength.
He could still fight.
He immediately gripped his saber and stood ready.
Very soon, however, Gao Fei could no longer smile.
The crescent-shaped saber qi at close range was too fast. He failed to evade it in time.
Gao Fei's blood and qi had long since surged to their peak, and his entire body shone with golden light. Even though he blocked with his saber—
A long white mark appeared on his skin, but his internal organs churned violently.
By now, his clothes had been completely reduced to strips of cloth, unable to conceal the golden gleam of his skin.
Seeing this, the weasel stopped. "What cultivation art are you practicing?"
It was only in the Early Spirit-Absorption Realm, having just drawn spiritual qi into its body. It did not have much spiritual qi within it.
Those two saber qi strikes, as well as changing direction in midair, had already consumed nearly half of it.
Projected saber qi consumed the most spiritual power. It took this chance to recover.
Gao Fei looked uninjured on the outside, but there was a salty taste in his mouth.
He had suffered internal injuries.
"Iron Shirt."
He also wanted to stall for time. Such intense fighting had consumed too much of his stamina.
That attack had left him somewhat drained.
The weasel laughed instead upon hearing that.
"I know your Iron Shirt. Once cultivated to perfection, it is nothing like this. It seems that even lies need a grain of truth to be believable."
"Enough. I'm done playing. Capture them. I want them alive."
After saying that, it retreated several steps, turned around, and returned to the chair carried by the Rat Demons.
Gao Fei pulled out his spear, looked around, and retreated to Lu Xiaoliu and Zhang Constable's side. Then he heard the two of them chatting.
"I heard Yellow Great Immortal likes drinking the blood of living creatures. Or it smashes open skulls and eats the brains."
"Should we slit our own throats first? At least we'd die quickly that way."
"How about I chop you to death first, then kill myself?"
"I only wanted to become an official constable. Why is it so hard?"
Gao Fei glanced at them. He had wanted to offer a few words of comfort, but none would come out.
Wasn't he the same? He had only just managed to earn himself one more year of life.
"Death isn't frightening. Kill a few more demons and make your deaths mean something."
As he spoke, fifty Rat Demons broke away from the surrounding crowd and charged at them.
The other Rat Demons remained around them, watching the show.
This time, Gao Fei left the spear to Lu Xiaoliu and drew back his saber.
For killing these little things, both hands were still more efficient.
From the moment he lifted the first Rat Demon, most of Gao Fei's effort had gone into defending the other two.
Only now did he understand why the Martial Suppression Guard did not recruit anyone below the Bone Tempering Realm.
On the battlefield, people in the Blood-Qi Realm died at the slightest touch. What was the point of recruiting them? They were nothing but dead weight.
The Skin Tempering Realm was not much use either. They could not withstand a heavy blow.
Lu Xiaoliu had some conscience, at least. Seeing Gao Fei use his body to block a blade beside him, he shouted with tears in his eyes.
"My lord, I give up! Run while you still can!"
"Are you insane? If I could run, I'd have run long ago. Do you think I'm putting on an act as some righteous gentleman?"
"Putting on an act? What does that mean?"
Was that the important part?
He was saving them now so that when he escaped later, the two of them could draw some of the firepower and give him a better chance.
The Rat Demons wanted them alive. As long as he kept their legs from being attacked, they were fairly easy to defend.
Before the first fifty had even been dealt with, another fifty rushed in from the outskirts to replace them.
This time, he did not gain many Merit Points. Only a dozen or so Rat Demons had died, giving him less than two hundred.
His total Merit Points reached: 431.
To be honest, with that many Merit Points, reaching the Spirit-Absorption Realm in the future would not have been a problem.
But looking at the situation now, there would be no future.
With that in mind, Gao Fei took the Beast Core from his pocket into his hand.
"System, put all my Merit Points into the Purple Tendon Bone-Tempering Art. I want to see what I can get."
In the first year, you continued studying the Purple Tendon Bone-Tempering Art, but discovered nothing. In the fiftieth year, you discovered that the vibration method used for bone tempering also affected the internal organs. The first time, you used too much force, and the practice phantom fell and dissipated. You could only use the remaining phantoms to test the force. You discovered that once a practice phantom dissipated, it refreshed quickly, always maintaining a total of six. In the one hundred and twentieth year, you had become familiar with the force needed for each internal organ and began trying it on yourself. You suffered internal injuries from the very start. In the one hundred and fiftieth year, you discovered that your internal organs had sustained serious damage. This level of intense vibration would not work at all, and you had to start over. In the two hundredth year, you found the right amount of force and began tempering your organs one by one, targeting the damaged organs. In the three hundred and eightieth year, your internal organs had fully recovered, your lifespan was restored, the cultivation art was successfully created, and the Four-Pillar Pure-Yang Body was restored to 55/100. You named this organ-tempering method the Purple-Viscera Organ-Tempering Art. In the four hundredth year, you had the phantoms practice and refined the Purple-Viscera Organ-Tempering Art before beginning cultivation. In the four hundred and tenth year, you began cultivating. The Purple-Viscera Organ-Tempering Art reached the beginner stage. In the four hundred and thirtieth year, your heart was initially formed, beating with greater strength. Nourished by the spiritual qi within the Beast Core, it became vigorous and powerful. You entered the Early Organ Refinement Realm. ...
When Gao Fei opened his eyes this time, the core in his hand had completely lost its color, becoming an utterly ordinary stone.
With a slight squeeze, the stone turned into powder.
At that moment, at least three short blades were lodged in Gao Fei's body.
Beside him, Zhang Constable and Lu Xiaoliu had their hands and feet seized by Rat Demons and were being lifted up.
They had just been captured alive.
Gao Fei grabbed a Rat Demon beside him and smashed it against the ground before hurling it toward the two men.
After throwing several like that, he rescued Lu Xiaoliu and Zhang Constable.
Fortunately, the enemy wanted captives. Otherwise, those two fellows would already have been corpses.
Having just reached the Organ Tempering Realm, his stamina was exceptionally good. His lifespan had also recovered to one hundred and twenty-five years.
Right now, he felt that he could lift a thousand-jin cauldron with one hand.
Yet faced with this predicament, he had no idea where to begin.
Without the spiritual qi in the Demon Core, he had no way to advance. What else could increase his strength?
As Gao Fei fought, he checked his status panel.
Six Harmonies Spear, Ultimate Realm. Eight Blades of Breaking Edge, Ultimate Realm. Form-Intention Fist, beginner stage...
He looked at the fifty-two Merit Points that had appeared again.
"System, add the remaining Merit Points to Form-Intention Fist."
In the first year, you adapted to your recovered internal organs and began practicing how to use heart force. In the thirtieth year, the strength of your entire body merged into a single force. Heart force could now be used to attack. You entered the Dark Force stage, but were not yet familiar with it. Each time you exerted it, you had to wait several days before using it again. In the fiftieth year, you could already use Dark Force with complete mastery, controlling both its magnitude and intensity. You could make an opponent die in however many days you wished. In the fifty-second year, you discovered that the Transforming Force spoken of by later generations seemed to truly exist. ...
