Background
Gao Fei died in a traffic accident on Blue Star and awakened in the Great Wu Kingdom within the emaciated body of another Gao Fei outside Yueyang County. The body was near death, surrounded by graves and corpses, and initially had only three days of lifespan remaining. A wandering spirit’s attempt to possess him was destroyed by his damaged Four-Pillar Pure-Yang Body, triggering the Merit Point system that became the basis of his advancement 1.
The original body’s reputation is a persistent burden. Gao Fei inherited debts, a constable’s position obtained through Gao Linyue, a history of visiting Blossom Street, and a reputation for bullying the weak while fearing the strong. He also inherited the consequences of having damaged his Pure-Yang Constitution through early indulgence 2 4 26.
Gao Linyue later reveals that Gao Fei’s family disappeared after his father was injured in a military campaign. Gao Fei was left as a beggar and taken in by Linyue, making his second uncle both his guardian and martial instructor 13.
Appearance
Gao Fei initially appears severely starved and skeletal, an appearance frightening enough that Yueyang residents, guards, and merchants instinctively avoid or defer to him 1.
As his cultivation progresses, his body changes drastically:
- Iron Shirt cultivation initially gives him a heavily muscled physique and darker skin 13.
- Advanced body tempering causes his skin to shine gold during combat 23.
- The Golden Body Art restores his Four-Pillar Pure-Yang Body and grants fine control over his physical form 34.
- He can alter his appearance and transform into a human or an animal no larger than half his own size 34.
- His bodily refinement later makes him physically comparable to an Early Jade-Liquid Realm cultivator 50.
Personality
Gao Fei is blunt, pragmatic, and irreverent. Faced with ghosts, corrupt officials, noble families, or demons, he tends to respond with sarcasm or immediate violence rather than deference. His early priorities are simple: remain alive, obtain resources, and become strong enough that no one can exploit him 1 3 8.
His morality is complicated by the Merit Point system. He frequently tests whether charity, demon-slaying, or killing traitors will be rewarded, and he openly admits that Merit Points influence many of his choices. Even so, he repeatedly protects civilians, shares demon-sale proceeds with villagers, pays Lu Xiaoliu fairly, frees Qiu Mei and Xiaocui, and remains behind to cover allies’ retreats 2 7 11 15 21.
Gao Fei is intensely secretive about his transmigration, system, and rapid cultivation. He uses supposed memory loss and his former wastrel reputation as cover, concealing his true realm whenever possible 8 12 25. Despite this caution, he becomes increasingly willing to accept responsibility for Yueyang County as the demon crisis worsens 33 40 47.
Abilities & Skills
Merit Point System
Gao Fei’s system awards Merit Points for certain virtuous acts, demon kills, rescues, and the deaths of people judged corrupt or treacherous. He can spend them on simulated cultivation, combat experience, technique deduction, and healing 1 20 37.
- Simulated training can encompass years or centuries while less than a moment passes outside 4 23.
- Rewards are not purely mechanical: giving food to truly starving people can earn Merit Points, while repeated charity to people not in desperate need does not 2 4 7.
- Killing enemies does not always produce Merit Points; the system appears to judge moral culpability as well as danger 20 35.
- One Merit Point can rapidly heal severe injuries and restore his stamina 37.
Four-Pillar Pure-Yang Body
Gao Fei possesses a damaged but progressively restored Pure-Yang Constitution.
- His body automatically destroys a possessing wandering spirit 1.
- Reaching Blood-Qi Return to Truth partially repairs the constitution 12.
- Completing the Golden Body Art restores it fully 34.
- Its intense yang nature makes Gao Linyue concerned that romantic indulgence could damage Gao Fei’s cultivation again 16.
Golden Body Art and Physical Tempering
The Golden Body Art is Gao Fei’s self-derived body-tempering method, developed from the Purple-Viscera Organ-Tempering Art.
- Provides extraordinary strength, resilience, speed, reaction time, and bodily control 34 36.
- Allows physical transformation and disguise 34.
- Lets him endure attacks from Spirit-Absorption Realm enemies that would normally be fatal to body-tempering martial artists 36.
- His extreme hardening initially reduces flexibility and reaction speed, forcing him to restore suppleness with blood qi 32.
- At the First Revolution’s middle stage, his body is comparable to the Early Jade-Liquid Realm 50.
Form-Intention Fist
A fist art reconstructed by Gao Fei from Beast Fist, Six Harmonies Spear principles, and knowledge from Blue Star 13.
- Bright Force — Doubles the impact of his strikes and improves his spear and saber attacks 21.
- Dark Force — Sends internal force through opponents’ defenses and can damage internal organs 23.
- Transforming Force — Allows force to be released through any body part under spiritual control 38.
- Bone-Melting Palm — A high-frequency vibrating palm strike that can reduce an ordinary body to blood and bone fragments; it requires charging time and can injure Gao Fei if overcharged 38 43.
Weapon Arts
Gao Fei is proficient with both spear and saber, adapting his style according to enemy size, defenses, and range.
- Six Harmonies Spear — Reaches the Ultimate Realm and can focus force into a point capable of piercing a surface 10.
- Eight Blades of Breaking Edge — Reaches the Ultimate Realm after Gao Fei abandons rigid forms in favor of practical, unrestricted strikes 7.
- He commonly combines spear reach with sudden switches to saber, fists, or thrown weapons 10 35.
- He later uses a black-bladed Tang Saber and a Black Iron, Hundred-Forged Steel spear supplied through Gao Linyue’s military resources 33 34.
Spirit-Absorption Arts
Gao Fei begins formal spiritual cultivation with the Yellow-tier Savage Bull Force.
- Savage Bull Force — Enables him to enter the Spirit-Absorption Realm and later reach its middle stage despite the technique’s low rank 44 45.
- Air-Splitting Slash — Releases a crescent-shaped blade aura; it grows stronger as he opens additional meridians and acupoints 44.
- Shrinking Earth to Inches — A movement technique enabling one-to-ten-zhang steps; it can fail where earth aura is disrupted or blocked 47.
Equipment
- Black-bladed Tang Saber — A heavy killing weapon Gao Fei keeps after returning a lighter spear to Gao Linyue 34.
- Black Iron spear — An eight-chi, fifty-eight-jin spear with a Black Iron head and Hundred-Forged Steel shaft; Gao Fei gives it to Gao Linyue because it better suits his uncle’s spearwork 33 34.
- Armor-Piercing Spears — Frequently used, thrown, broken, or expended during demon hunts 10 35.
- Demon Cores and Beast Cores — Essential cultivation resources used to power major breakthroughs in his body-tempering arts 30 32 50.
- Flintlock — A black-powder firearm developed with Lu Xiaoliu and local craftsmen; Gao Fei demonstrates it with a silver bullet capable of blasting a hole through a wooden board 44.
Relationships
- Gao Linyue — Second uncle, guardian, instructor, and frequent accomplice. He took Gao Fei in after his family vanished, provides manuals and weapons, and helps conceal or manage the consequences of Gao Fei’s actions 13 15 33.
- Second Aunt — A concerned but suspicious family member who remains wary of Gao Fei’s former behavior toward women 16.
- Gao Yan — Younger cousin. Gao Fei teases him over cultivation but gives him resources and encourages his training 34.
- Lu Xiaoliu — Subordinate white-clad runner and demon-hunting partner. Gao Fei begins paying him regularly, shares rewards fairly, and repeatedly protects him in battle 8 11 21.
- Zhang Constable — Initially skeptical ally who comes to recognize Gao Fei’s character during the Rat Demon crisis; Gao Fei later risks himself to recover Zhang after the Dog Demon assault 20 35.
- Qiu Mei — Former courtesan whom Gao Fei agrees to protect in exchange for her spirit-stone bracelet. He redeems and frees her, though their apparent relationship is often misunderstood by others 11 15 48.
- Xiaocui — Qiu Mei’s maid and companion. Gao Fei pays to redeem her alongside Qiu Mei so they will not be separated 15.
- Li Qingyao — Pharmacy representative and weakened cultivator who sells Gao Fei Savage Bull Force and Air-Splitting Slash. She recognizes him from the original owner’s past and becomes increasingly shocked by his cultivation speed 43 44.
- Li Jie — Li Qingyao’s second senior brother and a Qing Province Martial Suppression Guard disciple. He regards Gao Fei as a valuable ally in the Yueyang demon crisis 45 47.
- County Magistrate Xue — Yueyang’s magistrate and a powerful cultivator. Gao Fei intervenes to stop the Fox Demon from luring Xue into an ambush, then fights beside him against the Cat Demon 48 49.
- Lin Shaoxiong and Lin Shaokun — Lin Family enemies. Gao Fei repeatedly humiliates them before killing Shaoxiong in secret and later killing Shaokun during the raid on the Lin estate 3 14 30.
- Yellow Great Immortal — Perfected Spirit-Absorption Realm weasel demon. Gao Fei survives their first clash, then later kills him with a surprise attack using Shrinking Earth to Inches 36 49.
- Fox Demon — A powerful enemy tied to the destruction of Gao Fei’s family and Pure-Yang Constitution. She recognizes the scent of Demon Cores connected to her relatives on him and seeks revenge 48 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Transmigration and Survival
Gao Fei awakens in a ruined body with a damaged Pure-Yang Constitution and almost no lifespan. The system gives him a path to survival, but cultivation immediately proves dependent on food, medicine, Merit Points, and demon resources 1 2.
Tao Hua Village and Early Demon Hunts
As a constable, Gao Fei investigates Tao Hua Village, uncovers official corruption and demonic threats, and begins turning demon hunts into cultivation resources. His victories over Dog Demons and Rat Demons establish his spear-and-saber style and his partnership with Lu Xiaoliu 4 7 10.
Qiu Mei’s Redemption and the Lin Family Conflict
Gao Fei discovers a Spirit Stone in Qiu Mei’s bracelet, uses it to repair his body, and agrees to protect her. He redeems Qiu Mei and Xiaocui while becoming entangled with the Lin Family, whose members are later exposed as collaborators in a demon-backed conspiracy 11 12 15 29.
Rat Demon Crisis
Trapped with Lu Xiaoliu and Zhang Constable by Rat Demons and a powerful weasel demon, Gao Fei repeatedly breaks through his limits. He develops advanced body tempering, Bright Force, Dark Force, the Purple-Viscera Organ-Tempering Art, and a stronger sense of responsibility toward his companions 21 22 23.
Yueyang’s Collapse
As demons overrun villages and destabilize Yueyang County, Gao Fei clears settlements, escorts civilians toward the city, and gradually becomes one of the county’s principal defenders. After the death of most officials, he becomes the yamen’s acting decision-maker and uses both force and public manipulation to stop Registrar Lin’s proposal to sacrifice humans to demons 33 35 39 40.
Qing Province Cultivators and the Valley Battle
Li Qingyao, Li Jie, and Lin Ye draw Gao Fei into the wider conflict involving Qing Province’s Martial Suppression Guard. After gaining Savage Bull Force and Shrinking Earth to Inches, Gao Fei joins the expedition against the Fox Demon’s forces, kills Yellow Great Immortal, helps defeat the Cat Demon, and advances the Golden Body Art to the middle stage of its First Revolution 43 46 47 49 50.
Trivia
- Gao Fei’s first instinct after eating tough demon meat is to wish for a pressure cooker from Blue Star 7.
- He repeatedly uses claimed memory loss as an excuse to ask questions about the original Gao Fei’s life and local politics 8.
- His former reputation is so poor that even his relatives assume he cannot be trusted around respectable women 16.
- Gao Fei believes firearms may remain useful even if spiritual energy and martial cultivation eventually decline, while Gao Linyue considers them crude compared with martial arts 45.
