Background
Obito was once a kind but unexceptional Konoha shinobi known as the Uchiha clan’s “dead last.” He wanted to become Hokage, cherished his comrades, and gave Kakashi Hatake his Sharingan before he was believed killed during the Third Shinobi World War 122 139.
Madara Uchiha recovered Obito after the Kannabi Bridge incident and deliberately engineered his descent into despair. Madara arranged for Rin Nohara to become the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki, ensuring Obito would witness Kakashi kill her; this trauma made him reject the shinobi world and embrace Infinite Tsukuyomi 130 153.
Under a masked identity, Obito became a central force behind the Eye of the Moon Plan. He acted as “Tobi,” helped found Akatsuki with Pain, impersonated Madara, released the Nine-Tails against Konoha, and assisted in the Uchiha Clan Massacre 10 53 132 150. He regarded Infinite Tsukuyomi as the only escape from a world he believed was built on war, loss, and forced sacrifice 108 132 153.
Appearance
Obito repeatedly changed his clothing and masks to conceal his identity. During his campaign against Kumogakure, he wore a dark blue robe, a white tomoe mask, and Madara’s Gunbai, with a Rinnegan in his left eye and a Sharingan in his right 125.
- His face and body were visibly damaged from his earlier injuries; half his body was enhanced with White Zetsu tissue 64 127.
- He used spiral masks while posing as Tobi and later wore a white mask during the Jinchūriki hunt 10 126.
- After Tobirama removed both of his eyes, he was left nearly blind with empty eye sockets 133 153.
- Rinnegan life-force drain prematurely aged him, leaving his hair white and withered and wrinkles around his face despite being in his twenties 139.
Personality
Obito was calculating, patient, and willing to sacrifice subordinates for strategic goals. He treated the White Zetsu as expendable distractions and used Konan’s grief over Nagato’s death to draw Konoha’s attention away from his Jinchūriki hunt 121 125.
His confidence in Kamui and the Rinnegan often concealed deep insecurity. After Minato Namikaze defeated him, Obito became more cautious in battle, retreating from Hashirama rather than gambling on a direct confrontation 98. He was nevertheless repeatedly vulnerable to emotional manipulation: Black Zetsu exploited his longing for Rin, while Madara’s original plan had been built around weaponizing that same grief 119 130.
Obito remained unable to let go of Rin even after his defeat. Stripped of his powers and imprisoned, he repeatedly called her name and initially refused to accept that the Eye of the Moon Plan had been built on Black Zetsu’s deception 139 153. Rin’s condemnation finally forced him to acknowledge the damage he had caused 153.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan granted him a space-time technique connected to the Kamui Dimension.
- He could phase through incoming attacks by becoming intangible, allowing attacks from Killer B, Hashirama, Madara, and Orochimaru to pass through him 64 98 127 131.
- He could teleport himself, allies, enemies, and objects into the Kamui Dimension through a black vortex 53 98 126.
- He used Kamui offensively to remove Cloud ANBU from the battlefield and to escape Madara’s Tengu Susanoo 126 131.
- His intangibility could not protect him while physically interacting with a target; Hashirama identified this limitation while defending the Jinchūriki 98.
- Madara activated a cursed seal over Obito’s heart to disrupt his escape, though Obito forced Kamui to activate through extreme pain 131.
Sharingan and Combat Perception
Obito retained a Sharingan in his right eye after implanting the Rinnegan in his left.
- He used its perception alongside Kamui to adapt to Killer B’s Eight-Sword Style and evade attacks too fast to block normally 126.
- His Mangekyō Sharingan was regarded by Madara as an exceptional ocular technique, even among other Mangekyō abilities 131.
- Tobirama ultimately removed Obito’s Kamui Sharingan for research after defeating him 133.
Rinnegan
Obito implanted one of Nagato’s Rinnegan while retaining his Kamui eye 121 125.
- Asura Path — produced chakra-powered weapons through a mechanical arm 127.
- Banshō Ten’in — forcibly pulled Killer B toward him 127.
- Shinra Tensei — repelled Killer B with enough force to shatter his chakra cloak and bone armor 127.
- Human Path — began extracting Killer B’s soul, instantly ending his Tailed Beast Transformation 127.
- The Rinnegan imposed immense chakra and physical strain. Even with White Zetsu-enhanced tissue, sustained use caused severe backlash, bleeding, and life-force loss 127 128.
Fire Release
Obito combined Fire Release with his ocular and weapon abilities.
- Fire Release: Flame Fan Great Fire — transformed a small flame into a massive fire tornado while wielding the Gunbai 126.
- Fire Release: Blast Wave — fused Kamui with Fire Release to create a space-warping flaming tornado capable of incinerating multiple Cloud ninja 129.
Strategic Operations
- Coordinated Akatsuki’s efforts to preserve key members, personally rescuing Orochimaru, the Deva Path, and Sasori from Itachi’s trap 53.
- Ordered the use of White Zetsu forces as decoys during the assault on Kumogakure and Turtle Island 125 126.
- Created inferior White Zetsu copies using Five-Tails chakra through a method provided by Black Zetsu 125.
- Concealed his true identity even from Akatsuki allies, claiming that he had “no identity” when Orochimaru questioned him 53.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai — Madara’s Uchiha war fan, inherited by Obito; enhanced Wind and Fire Release and could reflect enemy attacks through Uchiha Reflection 127.
- Masks — spiral masks for his Tobi persona and a white tomoe mask during his Rinnegan campaign 10 125.
- Black Receivers — used one in an attempt to stab Kakashi after absorbing Lightning Cutter with the Preta Path 132.
- Chains — used to kill Konoha Prison guards before entering the facility through Kamui 98.
Relationships
- Madara Uchiha — mentor and manipulator who cultivated Obito as his successor by arranging Rin’s death; later became his enemy after revealing the Eye of the Moon Plan’s deception 130 153.
- Black Zetsu — co-conspirator who repeatedly manipulated Obito through promises of a world where Rin lived; concealed its own agenda and misled him about Madara 119 130.
- Kakashi Hatake — former teammate and recipient of Obito’s Sharingan. Their shared Mangekyō connection enabled Kakashi to enter the Kamui Dimension and confront him 122 132.
- Rin Nohara — Obito’s beloved teammate. Her death drove his rejection of reality; her forgiveness and condemnation finally led him to repent 130 153.
- Nagato/Pain — Akatsuki co-founder and partner in the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito considered Pain essential for controlling the Nine-Tails and advancing the plan 53.
- Konan — Obito treated her as an Akatsuki asset but exploited her grief over Nagato’s death to provoke an attack on Konoha 53 121.
- Tobirama Senju — principal enemy whose return repeatedly disrupted Obito’s plans; Tobirama defeated him in the Kamui Dimension and removed both of his eyes 10 132 133.
- Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki — Obito’s former teachers and victims of the Nine-Tails Rebellion. Before dying, he traded his own life to restore Minato’s soul 139 153.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Eye of the Moon Plan
Tobirama’s revival alarmed Obito, who nevertheless insisted that neither Tobirama nor even a revived Hashirama could stop the Eye of the Moon Plan. He accelerated preparations and sought Nagato to advance the collection of Tailed Beasts 10.
Obito approved Akatsuki’s ambush against Itachi and intervened when Itachi’s Kotoamatsukami turned Konan into a liability. He saved Orochimaru, Sasori, and the Deva Path through Kamui, then helped restrain Konan rather than allow Pain to lose her 53.
Rinnegan Campaign
After Nagato’s death, Obito implanted one Rinnegan and launched an assault on Kumogakure. White Zetsu infiltrators destabilized the village while Obito and Black Zetsu targeted Killer B and Yugito on Turtle Island 121 125 126.
Obito overwhelmed Killer B with Kamui, the Gunbai, and multiple Rinnegan Paths, but his Rinnegan’s strain prevented him from immediately completing the capture 127 128. He later stored the two Jinchūriki in the Kamui Dimension, only to discover that they had disappeared after his escape from Madara 131.
Fall and Imprisonment
Madara confronted Obito on Turtle Island, attempted to persuade him to abandon Infinite Tsukuyomi, and then attacked when Black Zetsu prevented any reconciliation. Obito endured Madara’s cursed seal and escaped into Kamui, but was badly injured 130 131.
Kakashi entered the Kamui Dimension to confront his former teammate. Obito offered him an illusionary world where their dead loved ones could live again, but Kakashi refused; Tobirama then arrived, froze Obito with Heavenly Shinobi Time, and struck him three times in judgment for his crimes 132.
Tobirama removed Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan, leaving him helpless. Kakashi requested that he be spared, and Obito was taken back to Konoha for imprisonment and judgment 133 139.
Death
Madara admitted that he had orchestrated Obito’s tragedy, while Rin rejected Obito’s belief that an illusion could protect beauty or end suffering. Obito repented, apologized to Kushina, and used the Dead Demon Consuming Seal to demand Minato’s soul from the Shinigami 153.
Tobirama retrieved Minato’s soul with the Human Path, while Madara used Limbo: Border Jail to drive away the Shinigami before it could claim Obito. Obito nevertheless died from the strain, confessing his love to Rin in her arms 153.
