Background / History
Itachi agreed to destroy the Uchiha clan after Shisui’s plan to halt the coup with Kotoamatsukami failed. Danzō stole one of Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan, while Hiruzen and Danzō’s actions left Itachi believing that eliminating the clan was the only way to protect Konoha and secure Sasuke’s future. He then became an S-Rank rogue ninja and infiltrated Akatsuki as Hiruzen’s spy. 47 57
Within Akatsuki, Itachi supplied intelligence to Konoha while working beside Kisame. Orochimaru learned his true allegiance through information connected to Danzō and exposed him to Pain, leading Akatsuki to designate Itachi for elimination. 47 53
After surviving successive Akatsuki ambushes, losing both original Mangekyō Sharingan, and escaping with Shisui’s remaining eye, Itachi was rescued by Tobirama near the Land of Fire border. Tobirama offered him a return to Konoha, exposed the former leadership’s crimes, and urged him to stop deciding Sasuke’s life for him. Itachi accepted the offer and resolved to repair the damage he had caused. 54 57 58
Appearance
Itachi is most often identified by Akatsuki’s black cloak patterned with red clouds and his Sharingan. During his escape from Akatsuki, he becomes severely wounded, loses both eyes, and relies on a crow to guide him through the Land of Fire. 52 54
- Originally wielded a pair of Mangekyō Sharingan, later stolen by Orochimaru. 51
- Receives both of Shisui’s transplanted Sharingan, which develop into a distinct Mangekyō variant after his Hashirama Cell procedure. 59 70
- His chakra manifests as a crimson or orange Susanoo, armed with the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade. 49 99
Personality
Itachi remains calm and analytical under extreme pressure. When surrounded by Akatsuki’s strongest members, he studies their formations and abilities rather than attempting a direct contest of power; his deception against Sasori is specifically designed to expose the Naraka Path. 48 50 51
He is profoundly self-sacrificing, having accepted the hatred of both Konoha and his clan to protect Sasuke and prevent the coup. However, Tobirama forces him to recognize that his efforts to control Sasuke’s future were self-righteous and harmful. Itachi accepts this criticism and chooses reconciliation over continued isolation. 57 58
His guilt does not disappear after returning to Konoha. When the Uchiha clan is resurrected, Itachi does not defend his actions; he kneels before them and repeatedly strikes his head against the ground in apology until Shisui stops him. 150
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan Genjutsu
Itachi’s original Mangekyō Sharingan granted Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu. After Orochimaru steals those eyes, Shisui’s transplanted eyes replace those abilities with two forms of Kotoamatsukami. 49 51 59
- Tsukuyomi — His original close-range Mangekyō genjutsu; Orochimaru deliberately avoids entering its effective range. 49
- Amaterasu — His original black flames, used to destroy several Animal Path summons. He loses access to it after receiving Shisui’s eyes. 49 50 59
- Kotoamatsukami: direct control — Permanently changes a target’s thoughts and will; Itachi uses it to control Konan and later make Orochimaru eternally loyal to Tobirama. 52 53 115
- Kotoamatsukami: subtle influence — Gradually alters a target’s thoughts and decisions, but can be recognized if the manipulation is pointed out. 59 74
- Limit — The direct-control eye has a recovery period measured in months even after Hashirama Cell enhancement. 74
Susanoo
Itachi’s Susanoo is his primary defense against overwhelming force. Before his treatment, illness and Mangekyō overuse restrict it to a third-stage manifestation and cause blurred vision, bleeding eyes, and eventual collapse. 49 50
- Yata Mirror — Reflects most energy-based attacks, but Shinra Tensei can bypass its protection through repulsive force. 50
- Totsuka Blade — Seals targets struck by the blade; Itachi uses it to seal the Second Raikage and Third Kazekage. 49 99
- Yasaka Beads — Heavy magatama projectiles used to destroy the Naraka Path and create openings in enemy formations. 50 51
- Perfect Susanoo — Following the Hashirama Cell transplant, Itachi can manifest an armored giant with wings, legs, helmet, sacred weapons, and greatly improved endurance. 70 99
- Limit — His new Perfect Susanoo consumes substantial chakra despite placing less strain on his ocular power than his former Mangekyō abilities. 70
Fire Release and Clone Techniques
Itachi combines conventional ninjutsu with misdirection to control engagements.
- Great Fireball Technique — Incinerates Orochimaru’s summoned snakes and is still usable while Itachi is blind and injured. 49 55
- Phoenix Sage Flower Claw Red — Launches fireballs alongside flame-coated shuriken against Orochimaru. 106
- Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique — Opens his first counterattack against Sasori’s ambush. 48
- Clone Great Explosion — An A-Rank technique that detonates a chakra-infused Shadow Clone; Itachi uses it to destroy Sasori’s Hiruko shell. 49
- Crow substitution and dispersal — Escapes apparent defeat by transforming into crows, then reforms outside the enemy’s immediate attack range. 52
Tactical Analysis
Itachi excels at identifying hidden weaknesses under pressure.
- Deduces that the Naraka Path is strategically important because it remains protected and does not reveal its ability. 50
- Uses an apparent attack on Sasori to draw the Preta Path away, then redirects Yasaka Beads into the exposed Naraka Path. 50 51
- Quickly incapacitates Roshi, Utakata, and the Four-Tails through Mangekyō genjutsu during Konoha’s jinchūriki operations. 76 79
- Provides Konoha with detailed intelligence on Akatsuki’s members, the Six Paths of Pain, chakra absorption, and attraction-repulsion techniques. 73
Hashirama Cell Enhancement
Tsunade and Tobirama transplant Hashirama Cells into Itachi after diagnosing his terminal Bloodline Disease. 63 70
- Completely cures his illness. 70
- Significantly expands his chakra reserves. 70
- Allows his body to sustain the new Mangekyō state and weakened Perfect Susanoo. 70
Equipment / Items
- Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan — One eye was concealed in a crow; the other was recovered from Danzō. Both are transplanted into Itachi. 58 59
- Guiding crow — Serves as Itachi’s eyes while he is blind and later carries Shisui’s remaining Mangekyō Sharingan. 52 54
- Akatsuki cloak — His former black cloak with red clouds, badly damaged during the ambush and escape. 52
Relationships
- Sasuke Uchiha — Younger brother. Itachi massacres their clan partly to protect Sasuke, then realizes he wrongfully shaped Sasuke’s life through secrecy and hatred. The brothers reconcile after the truth is revealed. 57 58 118
- Tobirama Senju — Rescuer, Hokage, and mentor. Tobirama restores Itachi’s Konoha status, gives him Shisui’s recovered eye, arranges his treatment, and repeatedly relies on his combat ability and intelligence. 56 58 59 73
- Shisui Uchiha — Close friend who entrusted Itachi with Kotoamatsukami and the duty to protect Konoha and the Uchiha name. Shisui later stops Itachi’s self-destructive apology before the revived clan. 51 58 150
- Kisame Hoshigaki — Former Akatsuki partner. Kisame respects Itachi and reacts with rare concern when Akatsuki orders Itachi’s death. 53 65
- Orochimaru — Former enemy obsessed with Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Orochimaru steals Itachi’s original eyes, but Itachi later uses Kotoamatsukami to make him loyal to Tobirama. 51 59 115
- Madara Uchiha — Uchiha ancestor who recognizes Itachi as an exceptional descendant, though he condemns Itachi’s role in the massacre after learning the truth. 115 116
- Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha — Itachi’s parents and victims of the massacre. After their resurrection, Mikoto grieves for her son despite his responsibility for their deaths. 150 151

Trivia
- Itachi’s new Mangekyō state is explicitly distinguished from the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan because Shisui was not his direct blood relative and their eyes did not fuse. 70
- He can still manifest a skeletal Susanoo after losing his original Mangekyō Sharingan, though it collapses almost immediately under his weakened body’s strain. 55
- The revived Uchiha return with ordinary eyes because their original Sharingan had been harvested after death; they retain the bloodline potential to awaken Sharingan again. 151
