History

Founding era and Konoha

The Uchiha founded Konoha alongside the Senju. Madara Uchiha later defected from the village, worsening the clan’s public reputation, but Tobirama still entrusted the clan with the Military Police Force and accepted Kagami Uchiha as a disciple. Later accounts characterize Tobirama as wary of the Uchiha, but not committed to their destruction 93 116.

Suppression and massacre

After the Nine-Tails was controlled through Sharingan, Konoha’s leadership increasingly suspected the Uchiha of rebellion. Hiruzen Sarutobi and Shimura Danzō interpreted Tobirama’s caution as justification to suppress the clan, while Danzō targeted Shisui Uchiha and stole one of his Mangekyō Sharingan 57 63 116.

Shisui intended to use Kotoamatsukami on Fugaku Uchiha to avert the planned coup, but Danzō’s intervention ruined that approach. Facing the imminent conflict, Itachi Uchiha chose to destroy the clan to protect Konoha and secure Sasuke’s survival 57 58.

The massacre killed 998 Uchiha—men, women, and children alike. Root, ANBU, and Obito assisted Itachi in secret; Sasuke was the sole survivor 150.

Return to Konoha

Tobirama offered Itachi a path back to Konoha after learning the truth of the massacre. He promised to expose Danzō’s crimes, reveal Itachi’s undercover role in Akatsuki, and revoke his rogue-ninja status 57 58.

Itachi’s return was later publicly confirmed during Konoha’s confrontation with Iwagakure, where he provided intelligence on Akatsuki and fought for the village 73.

Revival

Tobirama’s resurrection ceremony restored the massacred Uchiha, including Fugaku, Mikoto, Shisui, Izumi, and Izuna. The revived clan members awoke with memories ending on the night of the massacre and immediately confronted Itachi over their deaths 150 151.

The revival did not restore Sharingan that had been removed from the victims’ bodies after death. Their Uchiha bloodline remains intact, however, and talented members may awaken the dōjutsu again 151.

Tobirama later assured Shisui that the Uchiha would remain part of Konoha and would no longer face institutional mistreatment 152.

Clan Culture and Reputation

The Uchiha are portrayed as intensely proud and emotionally driven. Their reputation for arrogance and isolation contributed to strained relations with other Konoha residents, especially during their tenure as the Military Police Force 54 116.

Tobirama’s account attributes the clan’s instability to the emotional conditions associated with awakening the Sharingan: the deeper an Uchiha’s attachment, the more extreme their hatred may become after loss 58.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha clan’s hereditary dōjutsu. It may awaken through exceptional talent and intense emotional stimulation; even revived members who lost their original eyes retain the bloodline necessary to awaken it again 122 151.

• The dōjutsu is normally exclusive to the Uchiha bloodline; Kakashi’s Mangekyō awakening is treated as an exceptional case tied to Obito’s transplanted eye 122.
• Non-Uchiha users cannot naturally deactivate transplanted Sharingan and suffer severe chakra expenditure without external support such as Hashirama Cells 60.
• The clan’s eyes were extensively harvested after the massacre by Danzō, Obito, and Orochimaru 151.

Mangekyō Sharingan

Advanced Uchiha ocular power manifests after severe emotional trauma. It grants abilities unique to each wielder but can heavily damage the user through ocular-power consumption 50 63.

• Itachi Uchiha originally wielded Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, and Susanoo; his Mangekyō use progressively blurred his vision and worsened his illness 49 50 59.
• Shisui Uchiha possessed Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu capable of direct permanent control or subtle manipulation of a target’s thoughts 59 74.
• Madara Uchiha can manifest a Perfect Susanoo several hundred meters tall 130.

Susanoo

Susanoo is a chakra avatar used by Mangekyō Sharingan wielders for offense and defense.

• Itachi’s Susanoo wielded the Yata Mirror, which reflected most energy-based attacks, and the Totsuka Blade, which sealed targets it pierced 49 50 99.
• Before receiving Hashirama Cells, Itachi could only sustain a third-stage Susanoo due to illness and ocular strain 50.
