Reishi is the spiritual material that composes, fills, and can be gathered from the environment. Its concentration differs sharply by location: Seireitei has an exceptionally dense Reishi environment, while the World of the Living generally has less Reishi; Karakura Town is an unusually dense High-Reishi Zone 15 83 176.

• Reishi can be condensed into physical-seeming structures, including barriers, weapons, armor, clothing, buildings, and communicators 7 11 19.
• It reacts to and can be controlled through Reiatsu. Kidō depends on measuring Reiatsu precisely to arrange Reishi into specific phenomena 48.
• Reishi-based constructs may be shaped as arrows, bows, blades, protective equipment, creatures, and automated puppets 11 72 264.

Reishi and the Spiritual Cycle

When a Hollow is purified by a Soul Reaper, its soul returns to reincarnation and its Reishi returns to the atmosphere. Quincy destruction instead causes a Hollow's Reishi to vanish directly, reducing the total Reishi available to Soul Society over time 9.

Heavy Reishi

Heavy Reishi forms from the spiritual bodies of deceased entities with Third-Class Spiritual Might or higher. It cannot rise into Soul Society's atmospheric cycle and may eventually become earthbound spirits, vengeful spirits, or other uncontrollable beings if not properly handled 34.

• Soul Society uses an ancient funeral rite to transform and send Heavy Reishi to Hell 34.
• The restriction applies regardless of whether the deceased was a Soul Reaper or Hollow 34.
• A living soul below Third-Class Spiritual Might cannot remain long in extremely dense Reishi environments such as the Dangai 299.

Environmental Effects

High-Reishi Zones

High-Reishi Zones contain unusually dense and restless Reishi. They are strategically valuable to Quincy forces but dangerous because their spiritual density attracts Hollows and supports large dimensional rifts 15.

• Karakura Town is identified as a High-Reishi Zone and hosts a Quincy Reishi Armed Forces base 15.
• A suspected High-Reishi Unit in Kaimachi was believed to have drawn a Menos Grande into the area 46 48.

Reishi Erosion
