Nature and Control

Reiatsu resides within its wielder and can be sensed as an inner presence; Shuichi first experiences his own as a quiet flame rising and falling with his heartbeat 2. It is not inherently a hostile force: effective use requires guiding it rather than suppressing it 2.

Yamamoto’s foundational principle is that Reiatsu should move “as a stream,” not a flood. Stable output, gradual flow, and repetition allow its control to become as natural as breathing 3.

Its qualities can be read beyond simple strength. Skilled users distinguish Reiatsu by its shape, density, texture, stability, and residual traces; Shuichi identifies Quincy activity from a terminated spiritual trace and recognizes Takeda Nobumoto’s presence as fundamentally unlike that of a Soul Reaper, Quincy, Hollow, or ordinary human 8 47.

Spiritual Might Classification

Spiritual Might measures the upper limit of a person’s Reiatsu, rather than their degree of control over it 2.

Applications

Zanjutsu

Zanjutsu uses the amount of Reiatsu poured into a sword strike; greater output strengthens the slash 48.

• Reiatsu can be concentrated into a Zanpakutō to initiate its release and reshape the blade 12.
• Sword users may project Reiatsu as ranged sword aura 12.
• Excessive output without control can make a technique unstable or wasteful 3.

Hakuda

Hakuda strengthens the body through Reiatsu, particularly through instantaneous bursts at the point of impact 2 48.

• Concentrating Reiatsu in the fist and releasing it on contact can reinforce a strike enough to dent or damage solid targets 3.
• Precise timing is required; releasing too early disperses the force, while releasing too late leaves the power trapped in the hand 3.

Shunpo

Shunpo gathers Reiatsu beneath the feet and releases it to produce explosive movement 2.

• Its use depends on controlled changes in speed, direction, and landing point 48.
• Excessive bursts can launch the user uncontrollably, while a measured release enables stable consecutive steps 3.

Kidō

Kidō transforms Reiatsu into offensive, binding, defensive, or supportive spellcraft 2.

• Hadō is offensive spellcraft; Bakudō serves binding and support functions 2.
• Kidō relies on the measure of Reiatsu: each portion must be calibrated to a specific place in a Reishi arrangement 48.
• Incantations define a spell’s Reishi structure, form, and direction rather than serving as empty ritual 3 48.
• High-level spells remain limited by Reiatsu disparities. Kurohitsugi’s lock-on rate declines when the caster’s Reiatsu falls below a one-to-one-point-three ratio against the target’s 63.

Perception and Communication

Reiatsu can be sensed, traced, concealed, and spread across vast distances 8 50.

• Shuichi’s White Blade heightens his Reiatsu perception and filters illusions 47.
• Tenteikūra spreads the caster’s Reiatsu as a wide sensing network that can transmit messages to everyone within it 63.
• The Onmitsukidō’s Feimou Corps specializes in Reiatsu perception; its commander can detect fluctuations from central Seireitei to Rukongai’s Thirtieth District with location accuracy within a few hundred meters 41.

Effects and Limitations

• Uncontrolled release is destructive. Shuichi’s dormant Reiatsu erupts when he touches an Asauchi, nearly overturning half of North 79th District 1.
• Reiatsu suppression can physically incapacitate weaker targets. Yamamoto silences Central 46 by crushing the sages’ breathing and speech beneath his spiritual pressure 33.
• Captain-class and Bankai-level releases are difficult to conceal and may be sensed over great distances 111 179.
• Hollows instinctively move toward dense Reiatsu, making spiritually powerful individuals potential targets 47 57.
• A soul without Reiatsu cannot endure Seireitei’s concentrated Reishi environment for long; Reishi infiltration gradually erodes its soul structure until it disperses 176.
• Reiatsu is distinct from Heavy Reishi. After the death of beings with Third-Class Spiritual Might or above, their spiritual bodies become Heavy Reishi, which cannot rejoin Soul Society’s atmospheric Reishi cycle 34.
