Background
Ace grew up in Foosha Village alongside his younger brother, Luffy. Garp considers him his adopted grandson, despite their chaotic and frequently violent family dynamic. Ace rejects being defined by his biological father, Gol D. Roger, and fiercely defends the memory of his mother, Portgas D. Rouge. 120 125 127 140
While traveling with Masked Deuce, a starving Ace finds the Flame-Flame Fruit inside a treasure chest dropped by a giant bird. Before he can eat his share, Setsuna falls from the sky, slams into him, and forces the fruit into Ace’s mouth. Ace immediately gains fire powers, then challenges Setsuna for command of their prospective crew; Setsuna defeats him with a single strike. Ace honors the arrangement and accepts Setsuna as captain. 117 118
Ace initially promises to help Setsuna become Pirate King, but adapts to Setsuna’s separate dream of becoming the Gourmet King. Although he remains committed to the idea that the Pirate King is the freest person on the sea, he accepts that following Setsuna is his own choice. 118
Appearance
Ace is a freckled young man usually recognized by his cowboy hat and his flame-based fighting style. 117 129
- Several freckles across his face. 117
- Cowboy hat worn during combat. 129
- Can transform his body into fire through the Flame-Flame Fruit. 117 120
Personality
Ace is energetic, impulsive, and highly battle-driven. He readily invites strangers to join his crew, accepts captaincy through a duel, and eagerly volunteers to challenge renowned opponents such as Golden Lion and Scopper Gaban. 117 119 129
He has a strong sense of loyalty. Ace keeps his word after losing to Setsuna, remains concerned for Deuce, and reacts immediately when Foosha Village is threatened by the beasts released from Shiki’s falling sky islands. 117 125 127
Ace is deeply sensitive about Roger’s legacy. He rejects Roger as his father and becomes enraged when Shiki insults Rouge; Setsuna’s insistence that he be recognized as “Portgas D. Ace” rather than “Roger’s son” greatly strengthens his loyalty to his captain. 120
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
Ace is a Logia user who creates, controls, and transforms into fire.
- Creates large-scale flames capable of destroying beasts, buildings, and enemy attacks. 120 126
- Can propel himself through the air with flames and use fire to accelerate ships. 118 125
- Uses techniques including Fire Fist, Flame Net, Mirror Flame, Fire Gun, Heat Haze: Great Flame Commandment, Divine Fire: Shiranui, and Fire Fist: Meteor Volcano. 120 129 156 165
- His intangibility is ineffective against opponents using Armament Haki and can be bypassed before he consciously transforms. 117 120 144
Haki
Ace develops all three known forms of Haki during his service under Setsuna.
- Conqueror’s Haki — Awakens it in his battle against Shiki and later uses it to resist Gaban’s Haki shockwave. 120 129
- Armament Haki — Coats his strikes and flames to physically hit Logia users, including Enel. 129 144
- Observation Haki — Awakens it through Enel’s Mantra training; even before this, Gaban notes Ace’s near-precognitive combat instincts. 129 147
Combat Adaptation
Ace learns rapidly in live combat and becomes stronger when facing superior opponents.
- Invents new fire techniques mid-battle against Golden Lion. 120
- Adapts to Hanafuda’s rhythm within minutes, turning an initially unfavorable fight into a dominant one. 137
- Uses extensive experience fighting Luffy to predict and counter Moria’s imitation Gum-Gum attacks through Demon Oars. 165
- Can protect allies during large-scale conflicts, using flames to shield Punk Hazard’s researchers from debris during Setsuna’s battle with Kaido. 184
Relationships
- Chiaki Setsuna — Captain, mentor, and the man who defeated Ace immediately after their first meeting. Setsuna trains Ace in Haki, recognizes him as an individual rather than Roger’s son, and openly protects him as a crewmate. 117 120 125 140
- Masked Deuce — Ace’s first crewmate and close companion. Deuce initially suspects Ace of stealing food, but becomes loyal after Ace saves him from a giant bird. 117 118
- Monkey D. Luffy — Ace’s younger brother and childhood companion from Foosha Village. Ace’s long experience fighting Luffy allows him to dismantle Demon Oars’s copied Gum-Gum techniques. 125 165
- Monkey D. Garp — Adopted grandfather. Their relationship is affectionate but expressed through Garp’s brutal “discipline.” 127 140
- Golden Lion Shiki — A major early opponent whose battle forces Ace to develop new fire techniques and exposes his lack of Armament Haki. 119 120
- Scopper Gaban — Legendary opponent who recognizes Ace’s exceptional instincts and potential despite decisively overpowering him. 129
- Cavendish — Fellow officer and friendly rival. Ace defeats him through physical combat, while Cavendish’s inability to match Ace’s Haki growth fuels his jealousy. 140 143 147
- Enel — Fellow officer and former enemy. Ace defeats Enel by using Armament Haki to strike his Logia body. 144 156
