Background
John was an ordinary modern office worker before a magical truck transported him into the strategy game Fall of the Empire. He awoke as the Imperial officer John Maslow, inheriting the character’s academy background, military position, and a future in which the Norman Empire falls within ten years and he dies alongside the Emperor. His initial survival strategy is therefore not heroism, but retirement from military service before the Empire collapses. 11
The body and identity he inherits belong to a distinguished Imperial First Military Academy graduate who completed commander training and received the rare Iron Wreath. This reputation, combined with John’s accidental military successes, makes it difficult for him to quietly underperform or transfer out of frontline service. 12 14 16
Appearance
John is a black-haired, black-eyed Imperial officer who usually presents himself with controlled confidence, even when panicking internally. He initially wears the black-and-gold uniform of an Imperial magitech soldier commander. 11 45
- Black hair and black eyes. 45
- Wears a black-and-gold Imperial magitech soldier uniform while on duty. 11
- Carries the rank and bearing expected of an Imperial officer, which often causes others to overestimate his confidence and intentions. 15 23
Personality
John is fundamentally survival-driven. Knowing the Empire is fated to lose, he repeatedly attempts to retire, avoid dangerous assignments, or defect to the Allied Forces. He is cynical about military glory, treats many situations through the lens of his former corporate life, and is unusually concerned with money, comfort, and preserving an escape route. 11 21 22
He is also an exceptional improviser. When cornered, John can invent tactical explanations, patriotic speeches, administrative doctrine, and legal justifications quickly enough to convince soldiers, generals, and enemies alike. His outward image as a calm, selfless genius is largely the product of accidental success and deliberate performance. 12 16 30 44
Despite his selfishness, John does not want his soldiers needlessly killed and is uncomfortable with cruelty toward civilians. He shares credit with Squad 14, worries about Laiya’s safety before learning her combat value, restrains Wendy from persecuting an innocent villager, and orders protection for Stone Village. 15 33 49 50
Abilities & Skills
Magic Eye and Analysis
John’s inherited combat abilities are limited to Magic Eye and Analysis, leaving him far weaker in direct battle than his mage-soldier subordinates. 12 17
- Can use Magic Eye and Analysis as part of his officer skill set. 12 17
- Lacks meaningful frontal combat capability. 12
- Is less individually powerful than Wendy, who possesses Demolition, Magic Eye, Healing, and Telepathy. 17
Strategic Knowledge
John’s knowledge of Fall of the Empire gives him familiarity with future events, factions, locations, and military systems. This information is useful, but often unreliable when the world diverges from the game’s expected plot. 11 18 31
- Anticipates the Empire’s eventual defeat and his own canonical death. 11
- Knows the usual limitations of Allied Anti-Magic Devices. 20
- Recognizes Sellviya as an exceptionally dangerous enemy of the Empire. 31
- Uses knowledge of Victoria’s laws and Xianqin-related trade history to expose holes in Reddick’s merchant cover story. 47 48
Improvisation and Psychological Manipulation
John routinely turns panic, ignorance, and personal greed into convincing leadership performances.
- Fabricates a nighttime-patrol rationale to conceal his desire to fail safely and leave frontline duty. 12
- Presents a false history of absolute Imperial loyalty to secure an infiltration mission that he intends to use for defection. 16
- Uses rhetoric about civilian protection to answer a postwar-governance question he had not been following. 30
- Manipulates Laiya’s insecurity and desire to become an Imperial hero so she will lead the dangerous Bahamut Town diversion. 39
- Reframes his attempted seizure of the Hartman caravan’s gold as a test of Wendy’s judgment. 44
- Pressures Reddick through a false legal challenge, then withdraws the accusation to study his reaction. 48
Command Ability
John commands veteran mage soldiers and repeatedly makes decisions that others interpret as genius, even when his real motives are avoidance or self-preservation.
- Leads the elite thirty-member 14th Mage Soldier Mobile Squad. 17
- His altered night patrol results in the capture of an Allied infiltration squad and prevents an attack on Imperial supply lines. 14
- His actions during the Anti-Magic Device operation are credited with enabling the destruction of the Allied position and the Imperial victory at Walden. 25 27
- Is made chief commander of a Bahamut joint operation, though he attempts to keep the most dangerous responsibilities away from himself. 31 39
Limitations
- Cannot comfortably operate flight-enhancing magic equipment at high speed and relies on excuses to conceal his inexperience. 18
- Cannot swim. 31
- His plans frequently collapse because subordinates and enemies misinterpret his actions in ways that bring him greater fame and responsibility. 21 25 34
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Imperial magitech soldier uniform with gold insignia and gold-thread cuffs. 21
- Magic pack for assisted flight. 17 18
- Dagger used to mark a tree while preparing to defect. 21
- Hidden pieces of gold intended as emergency funds for his planned defection. 22
- Jeep used during the Bahamut operation, which John considers an unbearable “hell car.” 38 41
Relationships
- Wendy Brown — His deputy and strongest Squad 14 fighter. Their relationship begins with resentment and rank-based humiliation, but Wendy gradually becomes fiercely loyal to the commander she believes is brilliant, selfless, and considerate. John finds her troublesome but relies on her competence. 11 17 28 35
- General Dormammu Filot — John’s superior and greatest patron. Dormammu mistakes John’s survival instincts and rhetoric for exceptional loyalty, strategic insight, and leadership potential, repeatedly granting him dangerous opportunities. 14 15 27 30
- Colonel Jett Slaifute — A senior academy alumnus and Black Eagle commander who becomes convinced John is an unfathomable tactical genius. Jett’s “protection” repeatedly ruins John’s attempts to defect or avoid responsibility. 14 21 25 31
- Laiya Binote — His reluctant vice commander in the Bahamut operation. John initially judges her as weak, then recruits her eagerly after learning of her exceptional combat ability; Laiya comes to trust his encouragement. 32 34 35 39
- Dick Reddick / Reddick Derman — A disguised House Hartman member whom John suspects is tied to the Allied Forces. John sees him as a potential route to defection, while Reddick believes John is a terrifying Imperial interrogator. 45 46 48
- Colonel Bolter — The Allied commander John approaches to defect during the Anti-Magic Device mission. Bolter later believes John orchestrated the Imperial ambush and comes to fear him as a “true devil.” 23 25 26
- Sellviya Reinhart — A dragonkin enemy whose hatred of the Empire makes Bahamut Town exceptionally dangerous for John. He tries to avoid confronting her directly by assigning Laiya’s force to draw the town’s attention. 31 39
Story Role / Major Arcs
Walden Front
John arrives at the Walden Front intending to retire before the Empire’s predetermined defeat. His attempt to delay a patrol results instead in an unexpected success: Squad 14 captures an Allied unit targeting Imperial supply lines. The Imperial command interprets his improvised decision as deliberate strategic foresight. 11 12 14
Dormammu assigns John a Deadly Class mission to destroy Allied Anti-Magic Devices. John accepts because he believes crossing enemy lines will let him defect, then persuades Dormammu of his loyalty with a wholly fabricated patriotic history. 15 16
John sends Squad 14 away under the pretense of avoiding an ambush and approaches the Allied trenches alone. Jett’s concealed Black Eagle Special Forces misread John’s attempts to defect as tactical signals, uncover the actual enemy trap, and turn the operation into an Imperial victory. 20 21 23 25
The destruction of the Anti-Magic Device cluster enables the Empire to seize Walden. Rather than gaining freedom, John becomes a celebrated Imperial hero, an object of Dormammu’s political support, and the Empire’s perceived rising star. 26 27 29
Bahamut Joint Operation
John’s impromptu speech on postwar governance convinces Dormammu to assign him to govern Bahamut Town with a large force. Jett resolves the rank issue through a joint operation and assigns Laiya Binote as John’s vice commander. 30 31 32
Although John briefly considers protecting Laiya from the mission, he changes course after learning she is a formidable Black Eagle assault soldier. He then uses fabricated intelligence about the Allied Fifth Legion to divide the force: Laiya leads five hundred troops toward Bahamut Town, while John takes Squad 14 and seventy soldiers toward nearby villages. 34 35 38 39
Stone Village and the Hartman Caravan
While moving through the Bahamut region, John intercepts a wealthy merchant caravan led by Dick Reddick. Initially tempted to take its gold, he realizes the caravan may be linked to the Allied Forces and detains it instead, hoping to verify its identity and establish contact with Allied leadership. 42 44 45
At Stone Village, John rejects Wendy’s attempt to treat a frightened civilian as a spy and becomes increasingly troubled by the population’s fear of Imperial soldiers. He orders Mike’s injury treated, gives Stone Village food, stations his troops outside the settlement, and forbids looting or harassment. 49 50
Notable Quotes
“Retirement. That’s right, retirement!” 11
“Compared to the Empire’s great cause, I am nothing.” 15
“We must let the Empire’s people understand that the Empire’s army is a shield that protects the people, not thugs who trample them beneath their feet.” 30
Trivia
- John views military service through corporate-workplace logic, often referring to subordinates internally as “workhorses” or future “coworkers.” 11 22
- He hides his Imperial uniform rather than discard it because its gold components can be sold. 21
- His attempted defection inadvertently produces the opposite result: greater Imperial fame, political favor, and the risk of meeting the Emperor. 25 26
- The Imperial Army turns John’s improvised rhetoric into official “Maslow Quotations,” creating a propaganda study movement he desperately wants stopped. 34
