Traits and Combat Capabilities
Plains Mobility
Their equine lower bodies make Centaurs difficult opponents for Tauren on open terrain.
- Their speed and coordinated action repeatedly restrict Tauren movement across the plains. 2
- Centaur attacks escalate from isolated travelers to groups and caravans during the drought-driven conflict. 2
Martial Prowess
Centaurs employ bows, barbed arrows, spears, halberds, and ambush tactics.
- Centaur war arrows are identified as specialized weapons rather than hunting tools during the attack on Bloodhoof Village. 4
- Warlord Gelk wields a halberd and leads hidden assassins during his duel with Magatha Grimtotem. 8
- Stone Spear combines spear fighting with earth-based abilities after receiving supernatural power. 9 10
Elemental Transformation
Vel’th’s experiments allow selected Centaurs to become unstable earth-elemental constructs.
- Transformed assassins can hide by turning their bodies into elemental forms, avoiding warning from air spirits before ambushing their targets. 8
- Vel’th’s incomplete Ascension Ritual causes a scout to explode and re-form as a corrupted earth elemental, but the result is slow, unstable, and difficult to control. 9
- A corrupted Centaur corpse is described as an unnatural earth-elemental construct containing flesh and bones rather than a true elemental being. 7
Earth’s Gift
Stone Spear demonstrates an advanced form of Centaur elemental power.
- He merges with the ground to evade attacks and launch surprise strikes. 10
- He hardens his body into an earth-like shell that resists weapons and arrows. 10
- His power gradually dulls his senses, including his sense of smell, leaving him vulnerable to Sian’s trap markers. 12
- Tar prevents him from reconnecting with the earth, exposing a major limitation of his elemental movement. 12
History
Centaurs and Tauren are the two principal intelligent peoples of the great plains. Although the Tauren seek peaceful coexistence, Centaur raids and predation create a longstanding hostility between the races. 2
A devastating three-year drought worsens the conflict. As resources vanish, Centaur attacks become increasingly desperate and destructive, culminating in massacres of Tauren groups and caravans. 2
The Magram Clan later accepts Vel’th’s offer of immense elemental power, believing it to be a blessing from the Earth Mother. The gift instead corrupts the land and its recipients; when the power begins to fail, Vel’th redirects their resentment against the elements and positions himself as their savior. 16
Role in the Bloodhoof Conflict
Invasion of Bloodhoof Village
Centaurs launch an organized assault on Bloodhoof Village, killing defenders and pursuing Baine Bloodhoof and Sian Whitehorn. Their unusual use of infiltration, delayed attacks, and supernatural corruption leads the Tauren to suspect a wider conspiracy. 4 5
A Centaur watcher serves the Nightmare Lord through a demonic Nightmare Flower. He seeks a particular nightmare bloodline and intends to use Baine’s death to create terror and despair. 4
Ascension Experiments
Vel’th treats Centaurs as disposable subjects in his Ascension experiments.
- He threatens Great Khan Magra into obedience and tests the ritual on a young scout. 9
- The experiments create mutated berserkers and elemental constructs rather than reliable soldiers. 9 15
- Centaur soldiers eventually fight with suicidal frenzy, disregarding command, survival, and even victory. 15 16
Defeat and Evacuation
The Tauren counterattack drives back the Centaur forces, though the fighting is marked by severe losses and the disturbing need to kill enemies transformed into frenzied, corrupted creatures. 15 16
Cairne Bloodhoof orders the safe passage of Centaur civilians, including elders, women, and children, through the Tauren lines. The Tauren honor their prohibition against harming children despite widespread hatred toward the invaders. 18
Notable Centaurs
- Khan Magra — Great Khan of the Magram Centaurs. Initially Vel’th’s intimidated subordinate, he ultimately recognizes that his ambition enabled the corruption of his people. He shields Centaur civilians from Magatha and dies after partially exposing the conspiracy behind the invasion. 9 16 18
- Warlord Gelk — A boastful Centaur commander who duels Magatha Grimtotem. He uses hidden elemental assassins, loses to Magatha’s Stormstrike, and is executed after attempting to conceal a weapon while begging for mercy. 8
- Stone Spear — An ascended Centaur pursuer empowered by Earth’s Gift. He hunts Sian and Baine, survives fire and thermal shock temporarily, and is ultimately destroyed after Tamara’s enchanted arrow disrupts his regeneration. 9 10 12 13 14
- Centaur watcher — A fanatical servant of the Nightmare Lord who directs the pursuit of Baine and Sian while seeking a nightmare bloodline. 4
Relationships
- Tauren — Longstanding enemies whose conflict intensifies into open war during the drought and the invasion of Bloodhoof Village. 2 4
- Vel’th — Manipulator who promises elemental power, conducts Ascension experiments, and sacrifices Centaur lives for his larger Nightmare ritual. 9 16 24
- Nightmare Lord — The watcher and other corrupted Centaur agents serve the Nightmare through demonic influence and promises of ascension. 4 12
- Khan Magra — Protects Magram civilians during the Tauren counterattack, accepting responsibility for leading his people into Vel’th’s deception. 16 18
Trivia
- Centaur physical advantages are explicitly contrasted with the Tauren’s greater raw strength: the Tauren struggle against Centaur speed and coordination on open ground. 2
- Stone Spear’s defeat hinges on practical traps, molten iron, and thermal shock rather than greater supernatural power. 12 13
- The Centaurs’ corruption is portrayed as a violation of both life and elemental nature, since their transformed bodies retain flesh and bones despite becoming elemental constructs. 7
