Background
Baine is the young son of Cairne Bloodhoof and Tamara Bloodhoof. Though he is expected to one day become High Chieftain of the Tauren, he begins as an energetic eight-year-old calf who wants to become a true warrior and imagines leading his people in planting forests of pine trees. 3
His closest childhood companion is Sian Whitehorn. Baine repeatedly pulls the more agile Sian into adventures, even when Sian tries to escape them, and their friendship is defined by teasing, arguments, and unwavering attachment. 3
Appearance
At eight years old, Baine is a sturdy young Tauren, notably stronger and heavier than Sian but far less coordinated. His brown mane is cut by a near-miss spear thrust during his first battle with Stone Spear. 3 9
- Broad, powerful build for his age. 3
- Brown mane. 9
- Wields warhammers early on, later receiving the spear Ice Spike. 9 13
Personality
Baine is persistent, thick-skinned, and impulsive. He refuses to give up when challenged, whether he is trying to climb a totem pole or confronting an enemy far stronger than himself. Despite his confidence, he is sensitive about warrior honor and worries that he is stupid or holds others back. 3
His idea of strength is fundamentally protective. Baine wants power so he can defend the people he loves, but he is also afraid of gaining power without the responsibility to use it well or becoming a monster through it. 11
He is fiercely loyal to Sian. When Sian proposes separating so that one of them can survive, Baine recognizes the plan as a disguised sacrifice and refuses to abandon him, calling him his best friend and brother. 6
Baine can speak rashly in a crisis, as when he accuses Aldo of abandoning others, but he quickly regrets his words and learns to be more restrained. 28
Abilities & Skills
Warrior Instincts and Battle Rage
Baine’s inherited warrior talent awakens during his battle against Stone Spear, allowing him to turn fear and anger into sharpened combat awareness. 9
- Predicts attacks by reading an opponent’s posture and exertion. 9
- Uses anger to strengthen his resolve in battle. 9
- Must control that anger; Aldo warns that reckless rage is not the heart of a true warrior. 13
War Stomp
Baine instinctively unleashes War Stomp, a signature technique associated with Tauren chieftains. 10
- Slams the ground hard enough to shake the surrounding earth and scatter stone. 10
- Its effectiveness is limited against enemies able to merge with or manipulate the ground, such as Stone Spear. 10
Skull Bash and Spear Combat
Baine develops into an effective close-range combatant, fighting with a warhammer before taking up a spear. 9 13
- Uses Skull Bash to ambush Vel’th from behind and disrupt his spellcasting. 26
- Follows the ambush by severing Vel’th’s arm with a spear. 26
- A thrown warhammer could not damage Stone Spear’s hardened body. 12
Battlefield Coordination
Baine works best alongside trusted allies, particularly Sian. 6 12
- Waits atop a water tower until Sian’s trap is ready, then releases the water needed to thermally fracture Stone Spear’s overheated body. 12
- Coordinates with Tamara, Bashana, Xiao Na, Sian, and the hunters during the assault on Vel’th. 26
- Protects Bashana from an invisible spatial fissure by pushing her out of its path. 28
Equipment
- Ice Spike — A spear selected by Cairne for Baine and maintained in secret for years while Cairne waited for his son to mature into a warrior. 13
- One-handed warhammer — Used against Stone Spear before Baine receives Ice Spike; its thrown strike fails to penetrate Stone Spear’s enhanced body. 9 12
Relationships
- Cairne Bloodhoof — Father and chieftain. Cairne quietly prepares Ice Spike for Baine and awaits the day he can place it in his son’s hands. 3 13
- Tamara Bloodhoof — Mother. She saves Baine and Sian after Stone Spear’s apparent defeat and explains Cairne’s unspoken love for Baine. 13
- Sian Whitehorn — Best friend and “best brother.” Baine refuses to let Sian sacrifice himself and repeatedly trusts him in dangerous battles. 3 6 12
- Aldo Thunderhorn — Elder hunter and mentor figure. Aldo recognizes Baine’s growing conviction, later sacrifices himself to save Baine from Nightmare. 13 31
- Bashana Runetotem — Fellow young Tauren and ally. Baine protects her from a spatial fissure, and both are later trapped within Nightmare’s barrier. 28 31
- Hamuul Runetotem — Family elder and Cairne’s lifelong friend. Hamuul carries the injured Baine’s recovering group through the aftermath of the Nightmare disaster. 18 41
Story Role / Major Arcs
Centaur Invasion and Stone Spear
Baine witnesses the Kodo Beasts’ warning before the Centaur assault on Bloodhoof Village. He and Sian are nearly killed by arrows, escape together, and return toward the village despite Baine’s injury. 3 4
While hunted by Stone Spear, Baine refuses Sian’s proposal to split up. His insistence that they face danger together restores their trust and leads them to seek supplies for a counterattack. 6
Against Stone Spear, Baine awakens his warrior instincts, performs War Stomp, and helps execute Sian’s trap. He releases the water that causes the overheated Centaur’s earth-like body to crack apart; Tamara and a Kodo Beast ensure Stone Spear’s final death. 9 10 12 13
Recognition as a Warrior
After the battle, Aldo tells Baine that he has found the conviction a warrior needs: the ability to confront anger without surrendering to recklessness. Tamara then presents him with Ice Spike, the spear Cairne had long prepared for him. 13
Nightmare Crisis
Baine joins the group investigating Spirit Rise, where he follows Sian’s instructions despite his curiosity and impulsiveness. 17
During the assault on Vel’th, he lands a decisive Skull Bash and uses his spear to sever the demon’s arm. 26
When spatial fissures spread through Bloodhoof Village, Baine saves Bashana from an invisible fracture but is forced to rely on Aldo’s protection and judgment. 28
Baine is later impaled and trapped by Nightmare’s tentacles. Though mortally wounded, he refuses to beg or flee, trying to show Cairne that he is a real warrior. Aldo gives his life to throw Baine beyond the barrier, and Snowfeather’s final intervention carries him to safety. 31
Aftermath
Baine survives the disaster and rests on Cairne’s back during the communal purification ritual. He remains injured during the Winter Veil feast but eagerly looks forward to celebrating with Sian. 41 50
