Background / History

The Crusade arose from knights who continued fighting after the Order of the Silver Hand was destroyed, initially under Highlord Mograine and Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan. Under the influence of Grand Commander Abbendis and Grand Inquisitor Isillien, it became increasingly radical; dissenters were arrested and allegedly disappeared. Paladins opposed to these methods later broke away to form the more moderate Silver Dawn. 49

At Tyr’s Hand, the newly appointed High General Bridget Abbendis initially struggled to assert authority over entrenched officers. Commander Marlene publicly defended her during a senior meeting by striking Knight Balk for interrupting Abbendis, while Isillien imposed fifty lashes and reassigned him to the dangerous Scarlet Vanguard. 42

The Crusade’s first contact with Roderick and the Raven Guard Knights exposed both its appeal and its extremism. Its officers admired Roderick’s destruction of Tarren Mill and brutal treatment of Undead prisoners, viewing him as a natural ally, while Marlene considered his anti-Orc rhetoric excessive even by Scarlet standards. 42

Stratholme Crisis

Abbendis gradually began questioning the Crusade’s exclusionary doctrine and wasteful strategy after discussions with Roderick. She released prisoners Isillien had ordered executed, withheld supplies from the suspicious Stratholme front, and sought to investigate Saidan Dathrohan rather than continue feeding troops into the city. 48 54

Isillien used Dathrohan’s letters and soldier testimony to impeach Abbendis for withholding supplies, releasing prisoners, and obstructing reinforcements. Abbendis resisted arrest with the Crimson Guard, occupied a fortress outside Tyr’s Hand, and insisted that the supplies remained in the city warehouses rather than having been embezzled. 87

Abbendis ultimately led a joint expedition with Isillien to confront Dathrohan at Stratholme. The operation revealed that the Scarlet Bastion had already fallen: Scarlet soldiers had been turned into Undead and used to lure reinforcements into a Scourge ambush. 91 92

Only about half of the expedition returned. The loss of the Scarlet Bastion destroyed the Crusade’s immediate plan to retake Stratholme, while Dathrohan’s corruption shattered confidence in its leadership and security. 95 104

Reorganization

Following the disaster, the Crusade instituted Holy Light examinations for officers and personnel connected to Dathrohan, inspected food and water supplies for corruption, and prohibited private executions. Death sentences required Abbendis’s personal approval. 96 104

Roderick persuaded Isillien to return from despair and help rebuild the order rather than retire in guilt. Abbendis then ordered a contraction of the northern defensive line, transferring watchtowers north of Eastwall Lake to the Silver Dawn. 105 106

Under Abbendis, the Crusade shifted from scattered attritional warfare toward secured routes, reconnaissance, fortified positions, stricter recruitment, medical support, and coordinated operations with the Silver Dawn. 107
