Background / History
Murlocs were among the threats facing Southshore after Lordaeron’s fall. An early Murloc attack severely injured Roderick while he rescued Arnold; before losing consciousness, he killed more than a dozen Murloc warriors. The incident helped establish his reputation and contributed to his appointment as captain of the Southshore Guard 2 3 5 6.
The Shatterfin Murlocs controlled the coast southwest of Southshore, attacking fishermen, vessels, and isolated humans. Their raids destroyed dozens of fishing boats and made solo fishing unsafe for years 19.
Southshore’s Guard launched a campaign against the tribe after gathering intelligence on its numbers, spellcasters, and ability to fight more effectively in storms. Early patrols were defeated by disciplined shield-and-spear formations supported by Dwarf musketeers, but the main battle escalated when Shatterfin spellcasters summoned a violent coastal storm 19 22 23.
During the battle, the tribe’s elite warrior shattered the human formation and inflicted heavy casualties before Roderick killed it. A telepathic entity identifying the Murlocs as its “children” ordered the remaining Shatterfin to surrender. The clan offered treasure and promised to leave human settlements, then withdrew into the sea 24.
Roderick later explained that exterminating the survivors would have been strategically unsound: humans could not effectively pursue Murlocs in deep water, while a desperate surviving tribe could retaliate against fishing boats and isolated civilians 27.
Appearance
Murlocs are amphibious combatants with fish-like traits. Shatterfin warriors were described with enormous fish eyes, wide mouths lined with sharp teeth, a strong stench, and scales that offered limited protection against musket fire 22.
- Commonly fought with salvaged, heavily corroded harpoons and iron swords 19.
- Shatterfin warriors were generally observed without armor, though their elite champion wore a breastplate beneath tangled seaweed 19 24.
- The elite champion was dark green, thick-limbed, taller than Roderick, and carried an unusually well-preserved great blade 24.
Society and Organization
| Group / Role | Known characteristics |
|---|---|
| Shatterfin warriors | More than 300 were reported before the battle; they formed the tribe’s main fighting force 19 |
| Tidecallers | Led patrols of roughly fifteen warriors and used elemental, water-based magic 19 |
| Priests | Remained in the deep sea with the tribe’s leader; participated in major rituals and commanded the main force 19 23 |
| Elite warrior | A powerful armored champion who led a surprise assault from the waves and nearly broke the human line 24 |
| Mysterious speaker | An unseen telepathic authority capable of ordering the entire tribe to surrender; referred to the Murlocs as its children 24 |
The Shatterfin had a fortified coastal village of coral huts and recognizable social roles, including warriors, Tidecallers, and priests. However, Southshore’s forces believed they relied largely on instinct in battle, lacked organized formations, did not manufacture their own tools, and had no written language 22 23.
Abilities & Skills
Amphibious Warfare
Murlocs can operate both on land and in water, making them especially dangerous along Southshore’s coast.
- Could attack ships, fishing boats, and coastal settlements from the sea 19.
- Used waves, shallow flooding, and worsening weather to disrupt heavily equipped human infantry 23.
- Retained a major strategic advantage in deep water, where Southshore’s forces could not effectively pursue them 27.
Water and Elemental Magic
Shatterfin Tidecallers and priests used water-based magic in support of their warriors.
- Documented spells include Lightning Bolt, Frostbolt, and Frost Armor 19.
- Tidecallers were prioritized by Dwarf musketeers because eliminating them reduced the tribe’s magical support 19 22.
- Human commanders prepared Dispel Magic, Silence, and water-breathing magic specifically to counter Murloc spellcasting and amphibious combat 22.
Storm Summoning
A group of Shatterfin spellcasters and a priest successfully summoned a major storm during the battle at the tribe’s village.
- The ritual created heavy rain, violent winds, lightning, rising seawater, and poor visibility 23.
- Storm conditions reduced musket effectiveness by wetting fuses and making ordinary firing difficult 19.
- The spell exhausted or incapacitated the Murloc priest who completed it 23.
Massed Coastal Assaults
Murloc warriors fought aggressively in large numbers and could use the sea itself to conceal attacks.
- Warriors charged human formations with crude weapons and relied on momentum rather than disciplined tactics 22.
- During the decisive battle, powerful Murlocs hid behind a massive wave and attacked the human rear 24.
- They shielded their spellcasters with coral shields and by sacrificing warriors to delay enemy infiltrators 23.
Equipment
- Harpoons and rusted iron swords salvaged from shipwrecks 19.
- Coral shields used to protect priests and spellcasters 23.
- Fishing nets used to restrain dangerous opponents, including Adrian’s worg, Lupos 23.
- Coral treasure box presented as compensation following the Shatterfin surrender 24.
- Fishbone Ring — a blue-quality magical ring recovered from the Shatterfin treasure; enhanced water magic and meditation, provided a daily Frost Shield, and granted permanent underwater breathing 27.
Relationships
- Southshore Guard — Primary enemy during the Shatterfin conflict; the Guard defeated multiple patrols before forcing the tribe’s surrender 22 24.
- Roderick Northumberland — Killed numerous Murlocs in earlier clashes, led the campaign against the Shatterfin, and accepted their eventual surrender rather than pursuing them into the sea 3 24 27.
- Albert Stonal — Identified likely Murloc magical tactics and used Magic Missiles, Silence, and other spells against Shatterfin casters during the battle 22 23.
- Antoine — Infiltrated the Shatterfin spellcaster line and killed several casters with daggers before Murloc warriors drove him back 23.
- Adrian Vele and Lupos — Targeted Tidecallers with archery while Lupos attacked the Murloc line; the tribe temporarily trapped Lupos in a fishing net 23.
- Mysterious telepathic speaker — Claimed the Shatterfin as its children and compelled them to surrender and return to the sea 24.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Southshore Raids
Murloc attacks exposed Southshore’s lack of capable defenders. Roderick’s survival and actions during one such clash gave him the prestige needed to take command of the town’s Guard 3 5 6.
Battle Against the Shatterfin
The Shatterfin became the first major military test for the reorganized Southshore Guard. Their superior numbers, Tidecallers, priests, and storm magic nearly overwhelmed the human force despite the Guard’s training, Dwarven firearms, and priestly support 19 22 23.
Surrender and Withdrawal
After their elite champion died, the Shatterfin lost the will to continue fighting. Their unseen leader negotiated a withdrawal, ending the immediate threat to Southshore’s docks and fishing routes 24 27.
Trivia
- The Murlocs’ rusty weapons caused dangerous infections; two wounded Southshore soldiers later died from complications after the battle 26.
- The Shatterfin’s treasure included Gold Pearls, valuable materials used in advanced enchanting and clothing production 17.
- The Fishbone Ring’s inscription reads: “Walla walla walla walla walla, walla!” 27
