Appearance
Undead appearances vary by type and condition. Forsaken soldiers retain decayed bodies and equipment, while raised skeletons are bare animated bones; Ghouls are described as hairy, four-limbed creatures with tough skin and foul fluid dripping from their mouths 36 39.
- Forsaken soldiers commonly have rotting flesh and remain mobile after otherwise fatal wounds. 39
- Skeletons may wield weapons or tools recovered from graves and fallen humans. 36
- Ghouls run on all fours and possess resilient skin that resists ordinary slashing attacks. 39
- Necromancers can appear partially decayed while retaining spellcasting ability. 37
Composition and Capabilities
| Type | Documented capabilities | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Forsaken soldiers | Continue fighting unless their heads are destroyed; serve the Undercity and its local garrisons. | Tarren Mill’s soldiers survived non-lethal musket wounds and were difficult for ordinary troops to kill. 39 |
| Skeletons | Reanimated corpses capable of marching, wielding weapons, and overwhelming civilians through numbers. | They do not tire or feel fear, but fire and blunt force can damage them. 36 |
| Ghouls | Rapid quadrupedal charges; durable skin; close-range attacks. | Tarren Mill concealed Ghouls underground as a defensive reserve. 39 |
| Necromancers | Raise skeletons, summon undead warriors and demons, use Shadow Bolt, Fear, Death Coil, and other dark magic. | Hecular used the Southshore cemetery to create an invading skeleton force. 36 37 |
| Undead mages and apothecaries | Frost magic, Blink, slowing spells, corpse summoning, and toxic alchemy. | Terence used poisonous gas to cover his escape during the Battle of Tarren Mill. 40 |
Abilities & Skills
Undead Resilience
Ordinary injuries do not reliably disable undead combatants. Forsaken soldiers can rise after being shot unless their heads are destroyed, while skeletons and Ghouls continue advancing without normal human fear or exhaustion. 36 39
- Muskets and arrows are effective when they destroy the head or disable movement. 39
- Holy Light-infused attacks are particularly devastating against Undead. 39 40
- Fire can weaken skeletons, though it cannot halt a large undead advance by itself. 36
- Undead bodies remain vulnerable to sufficient blunt-force trauma, as demonstrated by Mayor Heni’s warhammer and Roderick’s weapons. 36 40
Necromancy
Necromancers can turn graves and battlefields into sources of reinforcements. Hecular raised numerous Southshore corpses as skeletons, while enemy mages at Tarren Mill attempted to summon additional dead during the battle. 36 40
- Raises corpses as skeletons. 36
- Summons undead warriors and demonic combatants. 37
- Can restore or preserve undead power through forbidden rituals, as Hecular manipulated Sevand into reviving him. 35
- Necromantic resurrection is not absolute: Roderick destroyed Hecular’s body, weapon, and escaping soul with Holy Light. 37
Dark Magic and Alchemy
Undead spellcasters employ a range of control, damage, and escape techniques. Hecular used Shadow Bolt, Corruption, Conflagrate, Fear, and Death Coil, while Tarren Mill’s mages used Frostbolts, Blink, slowing magic, and poisonous alchemical weapons. 37 40
- Shadow Bolt — lethal dark projectile used by undead mages. 35 37
- Fear — drove Lupos away from Hecular despite the dire wolf’s attack. 37
- Death Coil — Hecular’s final major attack against Roderick. 37
- Poison gas — Terence used a vial of toxic alchemy against the Dark Raven Knights. 40
- Limit: disciplined formations, Holy Light, anti-magic support, and ranged fire can contain or destroy Undead forces. 22 39
History
Presence in Lordaeron
Undead forces are among the central causes of Lordaeron’s collapse. Memories absorbed by Angus/Roderick show skeletons, Ghouls, Gargoyles, and other invaders devastating human defenses and driving refugees toward the coast. By Roderick’s arrival in Azeroth, Lordaeron has fallen and Southshore stands as a vulnerable human outpost near Undead-held territory. 1 6
Tarren Mill functions as an Undead foothold in Hillsbrad. Its garrison is connected to the Forsaken and Undercity, though its commanders are divided between the Royal Guard and the Royal Apothecary Society. Guard commander Selys questions the legality of unauthorized operations, while Bartrand and Terence place faith in the Apothecary Society’s influence and Varimathras’s support. 39
Hecular’s Assault on Southshore
Undead mage apprentice Sevand recovered Hecular’s hidden wand, followed its instructions to restore its power, and located Hecular’s buried corpse in Southshore Cemetery. After Sevand completed the resurrection ritual, Hecular betrayed him, reduced him to a skeleton, and assigned him command of a future skeletal army. 35
Hecular raised the cemetery’s dead and launched them against Southshore. Skeletons killed civilians, burned homes, and forced a mass evacuation; Mayor Heni personally joined the defense when the security force’s morale faltered. 36 Adrian and Lupos disrupted Hecular’s summoning until Roderick returned, after which Roderick destroyed Hecular completely with Hammer of Justice and Holy Light. 37
The attack killed 471 people, destroyed sixty-three houses, poisoned livestock, and left many residents homeless. Intelligence later confirmed that the raid’s purpose was destruction rather than territorial conquest. 38
Battle of Tarren Mill
In retaliation for Southshore’s destruction, the Dark Raven Knights attacked Tarren Mill. Antoine and Adrian eliminated outer sentries before the main force arrived, while Roderick broke the Undead front line with Holy Light and warhammers. Selys responded by releasing hidden Ghouls from beneath the settlement. 39
The defense collapsed after Roderick killed or scattered the remaining Undead forces, destroyed the mage shelters, and used javelins to overcome magical shields. Terence escaped north after his poison attack was intercepted and dispersed by Roderick and Albert. 40
The Dark Raven Knights exterminated the Ghouls, killed most surrendering Undead, and retained only a small number of prisoners. They then burned Tarren Mill, eliminating Undercity’s foothold in Hillsbrad. 40
Aftermath
Undercity imprisoned and executed Selys for abandoning his troops, while Terence was promoted after testifying against him. Forsaken leadership chose not to retaliate openly, and discussion of Tarren Mill was suppressed within Undercity. 44
Despite Tarren Mill’s destruction, the wider Undead threat remains unresolved. The Scourge continues to dominate much of Lordaeron and Northrend, while the Forsaken remain a source of conflict among the Dark Raven Knights, the Silver Dawn, and the Scarlet Crusade. 43 50
