Background / History

Rise within the Scarlet Crusade

Abbendis became High General after the death of her father, Alfred Abbendis, at Hearthglen. Her first major council meeting at Tyr’s Hand exposed her initially fragile authority: Knight Balk interrupted her report, and Commander Marlene violently restored order on her behalf. Abbendis supported Marlene’s intervention while leaving Balk’s formal punishment to High Inquisitor Isillien. 42 48

She first learned of Roderick through intelligence on the Raven Guard Knights’ destruction of Tarren Mill. Impressed by his reported strength and methods, she traveled south as a Scarlet envoy to assess and recruit him. 42 45 47

Southshore negotiations

At Southshore, Abbendis offered Roderick command of the Crimson Guard if he joined the Scarlet Crusade. He refused, arguing that the Crusade’s human-purity doctrine, coercive recruitment, and indiscriminate hostility toward outside factions were strategically destructive. 47 48

Roderick’s arguments forced Abbendis to reconsider who should qualify as an ally in the war against the Scourge. She gradually accepted that mages, farmers, militias, Dwarves, Gnomes, Elves, and other non-Crusade forces could all contribute to humanity’s survival. 47 48

She revealed her full identity to Roderick—Bridget Abbendis—and pledged to reform Tyr’s Hand according to a broader strategy of alliances, logistics, territorial defense, and coordinated campaigns. She subsequently served as Roderick’s temporary adjutant at Watchtower Village, studying farming, labor, food consumption, and military administration. 48 49

Stratholme crisis

After becoming suspicious of Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan’s requests for troops and supplies, Abbendis halted reinforcements entering Stratholme and personally investigated its defenses. Her inspection revealed unnaturally exhausted soldiers, weak Scourge resistance along the supply route, and behavior that reinforced her suspicions. 54 56

Isillien and Dathrohan used her withheld supplies as grounds to denounce her. Abbendis refused to surrender her position, occupied a fortress with loyal guards, and publicly offered to enter Stratholme and die fighting if her accusations proved false. 87 91

Roderick’s infiltration confirmed that Dathrohan’s garrison had become Undead. Abbendis then led Augustine, Rohan, and Leopold back into Stratholme to search for Roderick, fighting through Undead patrols and defending Alonsus Chapel against overwhelming Scourge forces. 89 97 98 99 100

The Stratholme disaster vindicated her suspicions but devastated her emotionally. She helped establish emergency reforms at Tyr’s Hand: investigations of Dathrohan’s associates, Holy Light examinations for suspects, a temporary governing council, and a ban on unsanctioned executions. 96 104

Reforming the Crusade

Abbendis formally strengthened cooperation with the Silver Dawn, appointed joint-operation commanders, tightened recruitment standards, expanded reconnaissance and medical support, and adopted phased campaigns rather than attempting an immediate reconquest of Stratholme. 107

Her reforms also reduced Isillien’s political influence. Although she retained him in an inquisitorial role, Abbendis shifted military and civil authority toward commanders she considered more reliable. 107 108
