Background / History

Life near Raven Hill

Eugene lived near Raven Hill with his teacher, McVey. Years before the main journey, he rescued Gwendolyn during a Drow night hunt, protected her through the forest until dawn, and warned her that such attacks were becoming more frequent. Although reserved and harsh in speech, he left without seeking recognition. Gwendolyn later visited him in secret with food and supplies, eventually falling in love with him 22.

He was later revealed as McVey’s disciple. When three Holy See archbishops discovered McVey, they used a Black Crystal to drive the Undead mage berserk. McVey shattered his own soul to secure Eugene’s escape, while one of the attackers placed a lethal curse on Eugene 30.

Green Forest and the Lionheart Guild

During the curse outbreak spreading from Bitter City, Eugene removed curses from infected beasts in the Green Forest. He protected Gwendolyn from a large pack of fourth-tier Wind Wolves, but was gravely injured and brought unconscious to the Lionheart Guild headquarters by Gwendolyn 23.

Gwendolyn’s healing could not stop his deterioration. Elufiel and Odovish identified the affliction as a long-standing lethal curse: Odovish dispelled it, while Elufiel used Chakra: Blessing and Holy Hymn to stabilize Eugene’s draining life force 26.

Odovish then compelled the Lionheart Guild to sign a magical silence contract stating that they had seen no arcanist during Frostmoon. Eugene was placed under Odovish’s custody and became protected from immediate exposure to the Holy See 27.

Joining Odovish and Elufiel

Initially distrustful of Odovish, Eugene resisted revealing his history or relying on the Council. He eventually returned voluntarily, requested permission to travel with Odovish and Elufiel to Everlook Canyon, and presented a rose-shaped ring carrying clues left by Spell Saint Darren 28 29.

He chose not to bid farewell to Gwendolyn before departing, believing that he had only brought danger into her life. Privately, however, he kept the amulet she gave him and wished for a future in which he could openly give her happiness 30.

Pursuit by the Holy See

At Golden Apple Town, Eugene discovered a wanted notice bearing his likeness and recognized members of the Judgement Tribunal searching for him. Elufiel used the Sin’dorei Orb to temporarily transform him into an elf, then convinced the Tribunal that he was her elven companion 39.

He continued toward Everlook Canyon with Odovish and Elufiel, helping activate spatial gates along the route. Upon arrival, he was directed to the settlement reserved for visiting Arcane mages while Odovish escorted Elufiel into the Council’s inner city 49.

Eugene first appears in a severely wounded and neglected state after Gwendolyn brings him to the Lionheart Guild headquarters 22.

Eugene is cautious, proud, and reluctant to surrender control of his life to unfamiliar mages. His initial responses to Odovish are guarded, shaped by the persecution of Arcane casters and his fear that alliances between mages can conceal manipulation or coercion 28.

Despite the danger attached to his profession, Eugene consistently acts compassionately. He helps villagers near the Andorhal River, removes curses from infected animals, and risks his life protecting Gwendolyn from the Wind Wolves 22 23.
