Background and History

Ace is the son of Pirate King Roger and Portgas D. Rouge, and was raised by Garp. He grew up with complicated feelings about Roger: resentment over the danger and loss tied to his parentage alongside admiration for his father’s strength and freedom. Sabo and Luffy became his brothers 35 37 215.

Ace captained the Spade Pirates when they encountered the Kuja Pirates. After Hancock defeated him, Leo revealed that he knew Ace’s parentage and proposed an alliance against the World Government. Ace and his crew joined the Revolutionary Army; Leo later disbanded the Spade Pirates as a separate crew and appointed Ace captain of the Second Special Attack Force 34 36 48 64.

Personality

• Ace makes decisive choices under pressure: while his crew was stranded without supplies or a usable Log Pose, he chose to raid Iska’s Marine ship 34.
• Leo’s trust initially unsettled him because of his doubts about his origins, but he accepted the Flame-Flame Fruit and the responsibility that came with it 64.
• His time in the Revolutionary Army made him more attentive to his troops. After Crocodile retreated, Ace stayed with his force rather than abandoning it to pursue him 383.
• He can still act quickly when lives are at risk: on learning of Tesoro’s hostage plan, he and Kyros chose an immediate strike rather than wait for orders 489 490.

• Alabasta operation: He reunites with Luffy, confronts Crocodile, calls for support when their Devil Fruit abilities prove a poor matchup, and remains with his troops after Crocodile retreats 376 380 382 383.
