Ch. 141Completely in the Dark
Plot points and events
- After Rogge backs down from a confrontation, Doflamingo leaves and Kong’s lightning stops. The other pirates remain wary of Rogge’s power, while Jelly wants revenge on the Black Bee Tribe for concealing the island’s rules and using Rogge’s crew as a distraction.
- The Big Tide begins: the sea recedes, huge whirlpools churn up black sediment, and a series of powerful waves washes over Black Pearl’s three islands. Rogge explains that the whirlpools bring diamonds up from deep underground.
- Rogge plans to search the exposed seabed during the brief lull between waves. He takes Jelly, Jerry, Carl, Dolos, Doloi, and Enel down to the island, while the rest of the crew keeps watch aboard the Ark.
- The search proves difficult. Black mud covers the seabed, and the crew cannot see any diamonds. Rogge suggests that Jelly use his vines to sweep up the mud, but they have no clear plan yet.
Character developments and interactions
- Rogge shows restraint and strategic patience, choosing not to prolong the earlier confrontation and focusing instead on the opportunity the Big Tide presents.
- Jelly’s anger at the Black Bee Tribe contrasts with Rogge’s practical focus on securing a share of the diamonds.
- Cook demonstrates experience by reading the sea’s changing color and explaining what it signals. Daifuku’s prior experience also lets him recognize the danger.
- The crew coordinates according to its strengths: Cook and Ham keep the Ark aloft, Simon and others stand guard, and Rogge leads the search team.
Significant themes
- Nature’s overwhelming power: Even formidable fighters avoid challenging the Big Tide directly.
- Strategy and adaptability: Rogge waits for the right opportunity, then adjusts when the search conditions differ from expectations.
- Limited knowledge and preparation: Despite their strength, the crew is unprepared for the black mud and cannot yet see how to find the diamonds—leaving them, as the chapter title suggests, “completely in the dark.”
