Ino is the daughter of Inoichi and Lino Yamanaka and grows up around her family’s flower shop. At the Academy, she is initially interested in Sasuke Uchiha and had previously fallen out with Sakura Haruno because they liked the same boy. Despite this, she retains a strong sense of justice: she testifies that Kiba, not Naruto, initiated their classroom conflict. 6

After Naruto’s appearance improves, Ino’s attraction rapidly shifts from Sasuke to Naruto. She pursues him outside the Yamanaka flower shop, walks to school with him despite his deliberately aloof behavior, and decides that he is more appealing than Sasuke. Naruto had arranged their encounter and even the earlier flower-pulling incident to draw her in. 13

Her crush becomes increasingly competitive. Ino arrives early to intercept Naruto, clings to him on the way to school, forces another student to surrender the seat beside him, and openly competes with Hinata for his attention. 15 Naruto uses Ino’s pursuit to gain access to Lino, who accepts him as a son figure; Ino is left deeply embarrassed when he bluntly calls her mother “Mom.” 18
