Background

Mikoto was a close friend of Kushina Uzumaki, Naruto’s late mother. Following the Nine-Tails’ attack, the Uchiha clan was forbidden from approaching Naruto independently because the culprit was believed to possess a Sharingan, preventing Mikoto from visiting him despite her earlier intention to do so. 9

She married Fugaku Uchiha, the Uchiha clan head, and raised their sons Itachi and Sasuke. Naruto later observes that both boys had grown distant from her in different ways: Itachi matured early, while Sasuke focused much of his affection on Itachi rather than his mother. 10

Naruto met Mikoto after carrying an apparently unconscious Sasuke home following their wager. He immediately asked her to become his mother, invoking her friendship with Kushina and asking for care, protection, and affection. Touched by his directness and loneliness, Mikoto embraced and accepted him. 8 9

After Sasuke repeatedly lost wagers to Naruto, Fugaku enforced the agreement that Mikoto would leave the Uchiha compound and stay with Naruto. Though conflicted, she accepted the move as an opportunity to escape clan pressure and care for Kushina’s son. 21 22

Personality

Her kindness does not make her passive. She scolds Sasuke when he obstructs Naruto, rejects Fugaku’s use of “jinchūriki” as an impersonal label for Naruto, and fiercely defends Naruto when Inoichi insults him. 10 21 43

After the destruction of much of her clan and Fugaku’s death, Mikoto becomes grief-stricken and emotionally exhausted. Even so, she retains a strong sense of responsibility toward Sasuke, deciding that he should remain at the Uchiha compound rather than move into Naruto’s home. 45 50
