Background / History

Sasuke was the Ninja Academy’s top student and measured himself against his older brother, Itachi, who had also been first in his class. Naruto’s sudden defeat of Kiba made Sasuke recognize him as a threat to his own position, beginning his competitive fixation on surpassing Naruto 5.

Naruto escalated the rivalry by wagering that Sasuke would “give” him Mikoto if he lost. Sasuke accepted in anger, fell for Naruto’s clone-and-transformation deception, and was struck by Leaf Hurricane. The defeat triggered Sasuke’s unexplained Byakugan awakening 7. Naruto then carried the unconscious Sasuke to the Uchiha home and used the wager to present himself to Mikoto as her new son 8 9.

Mikoto’s affection for Naruto became a continuing source of humiliation and motivation for Sasuke. When she told him to call her “Mikoto Auntie,” he awakened his One-Tomoe Sharingan and committed himself to winning her back through training 10. After Mikoto later moved in with Naruto, Sasuke awakened a second tomoe and intensified his training under Itachi 22.

Despite defeating Kiba and greatly improving his Fire Release, throwing techniques, and taijutsu, Sasuke repeatedly lost to Naruto. Naruto overwhelmed Sasuke’s Fireball Jutsu, then saved him from the resulting danger; Sasuke accepted the loss only after Itachi intervened 16 17. A later Academy match ended with Naruto knocking Sasuke unconscious with one kick despite Sasuke’s confidence in his Two-Tomoe Sharingan 40.

During the Uchiha massacre, Sasuke witnessed Fugaku’s death and was forced by Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan to relive it through genjutsu. He fled in terror, only to be pursued by Root operatives. His Sharingan evolved to three tomoe before Naruto killed the attackers and rescued him 41 45. Sasuke remained unconscious afterward, suffering recurring nightmares of Itachi killing the clan 49.

Appearance

Sasuke is a black-haired Academy student whose eyes turn scarlet when he activates the Sharingan.

Personality

Sasuke is intensely proud, competitive, and sensitive to insults against his family and Uchiha identity. Naruto’s wager over Mikoto infuriates him not merely as an insult, but because Sasuke is deeply attached to his mother and regards Naruto’s place in her life as something stolen from him 7 22.

His pride often makes him reckless. He charges Naruto while angry, refuses to admit fear after being frozen by Naruto’s fireball, and repeatedly overestimates how much his training has closed the gap between them 7 17 40. Nevertheless, he turns humiliation into motivation, training obsessively and repeatedly renewing his vow to defeat Naruto 10 30.

Sasuke holds Itachi’s judgment in exceptional regard. He accepts defeat when Itachi orders him to do so and seeks his brother’s instruction whenever he believes Naruto has surpassed him 17 36. This trust is shattered when Itachi appears to murder Fugaku and attacks Sasuke during the massacre 41.

Dōjutsu

Sasuke has displayed both the Byakugan and the Uchiha Sharingan.
