Background / History

Rocks Pirates captain

Rocks ruled the Rocks Pirates from Hachinosu, gathering powerful pirates through Davy Back Fights while allowing them to retain their own ambitions and interests 5. He led from a skull throne within Hachinosu’s skull-shaped mountain, commanding the attention of figures including Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, Shiki, Ochoku, Silver Axe, Stussy, Kaido, and Streusen 2.

Though his crew believed he was infatuated with Shakky, his decision to attack God Valley was primarily driven by the danger facing his wife, child, and clansmen—the Davy Family—on his homeland 2 3. He mobilized the crew with an equal division of treasure rather than appeals to friendship, demonstrating his understanding of his followers’ greed and independence 3.

Route to God Valley

When Harald’s Elbaf warship blocked the Rocks Pirates, Rocks halted an immediate assault and chose to negotiate. He argued that the World Government could not be trusted and that Elbaf could gain greater leverage by allowing the pirates and Government to exhaust one another 4.

After negotiations collapsed, the Rocks Pirates bypassed Elbaf and continued toward God Valley 5 6. On arrival, Rocks proposed a temporary alliance: rescue Shakky first, then divide the island’s treasure and Devil Fruits evenly 7.

God Valley Incident

Rocks led the advance through God Valley’s jungle while John remained behind to confront Saint Shepherd Somaz 7 8. When Saint Saturn appeared in Ushi-Oni form alongside the crowned shadow controlling him, Rocks recognized the shadow as the hidden “world” and considered its appearance an opportunity to strike at the power behind the World Government 12.

Newgate, Kaido, and Linlin joined Rocks against Saturn, while Roger and Garp later also fought the Ushi-Oni 12 14. Rocks directly challenged the crowned shadow, revealed his membership in the Davy Family, and severed one of Saturn’s limbs with Eclipse 13.

The crowned shadow ultimately pierced Rocks with black spikes and used Black Transference to invade and reshape his body and mind 14. Rocks resisted through willpower and Conqueror’s Haki long enough to denounce the shadow’s fear of future challengers, but was eventually overwhelmed and ordered to eradicate the Davy bloodline—including Alice and Teach 14.

Under the Crown Shadow’s control, Rocks became a gigantic force that slaughtered pirates across the island. His whereabouts became unknown after the incident, and the World Government falsely credited Garp with defeating him 16.

Personality

Rocks was calculating rather than impulsive. Even with his family in danger, he used treasure as an incentive to assemble a capable force instead of charging into God Valley alone 3. He also demonstrated political insight in his conversation with Harald, recognizing both Elbaf’s vulnerability and the World Government’s unreliability 4.

He was openly defiant toward authority and contemptuous toward the Crown Shadow, mocking it even while facing an overwhelmingly dangerous enemy 13. His ambition, however, could become recklessness: rather than fleeing God Valley after securing time for Alice and Teach to escape, he remained to pursue a chance to kill Imu 11 12.

Despite leading a crew held together by profit and rivalry, Rocks trusted his comrades. He immediately saw through John’s hostage bluff and entrusted Alice and Teach to him without hesitation 12. His final resistance reflected his belief that no ruler could control history forever and that future generations would inevitably rise against the current order 14.

Confrontation with Harald

Rocks attempts to persuade Harald not to oppose the expedition for the World Government. His diplomacy briefly delays the conflict, but the failed negotiation forces the Rocks Pirates to proceed without Elbaf’s support 4 5.
