Personality

Pete initially presents himself as a considerate subordinate. He checks on John’s health, straightens his collar, reassures him over lost treasure, and urges him to attend Rocks’s cadre meeting. John nevertheless becomes immediately wary of him, suspecting that Pete is among the subordinates destined to betray him. 1

Beneath this loyalty, Pete is calculating, security-minded, and intensely greedy. Rather than seeking dominance at sea, he intends to use plundered wealth to buy noble status in a World Government-affiliated kingdom, erase his bounty, and retire safely. 19 His concern for Rocks’s widow and child is similarly performative: he plans to exploit them for the location of Rocks’s hidden wealth. 18

Pete is pragmatic enough to wait for an advantage rather than attack recklessly. During the voyage to John’s treasure site, he deliberately relies on John exhausting himself repelling Sea Kings, expecting that depleted Haki will leave John vulnerable to the Reaction Fruit. 21 Once he believes he has the upper hand, however, he becomes cruel and overconfident, ordering massacres and declaring himself a god within his ability’s range. 30

History

Service Under Captain John

Pete served as Captain John’s second-in-command within the Rocks Pirates. Following the change in John’s behavior after the latter’s body was taken over, Pete approached him with apparent concern and informed him of Rocks’s officer meeting. 1 He later questioned John’s certainty that Rocks would challenge the World Government over Shakky’s abduction, judging such a war too risky to wage for her alone. 2

During the God Valley Incident, Pete intercepted the Mad Python Pirates when they confronted John. He froze the entire group with the Reaction Fruit and allowed John to continue searching for Alice and Teach. 9

Pursuit of John’s Treasure

After the Rocks Pirates disbanded, Pete remained aboard the Treasure with John. When John announced that the Golden Ship would be brought to his hidden treasure site, Pete was secretly thrilled at the prospect of discovering its location. 18

Pete pretended to accept responsibility for Rocks’s widow and child, but privately intended to use them to locate Rocks’s own hidden fortune. 18 He also wanted John’s wealth to finance a quiet, legitimate life as a noble in a World Government-affiliated kingdom. 19

While crossing the Calm Belt, Pete pushed the crew to row while John continually used Conqueror’s Haki to repel Sea Kings. He intended to exploit the resulting exhaustion and strike once John could no longer maintain his defenses. 21

Betrayal and Framing

At John’s treasure cave, Pete led the crew’s betrayal. After John claimed there were no traps, Pete stabbed him through the back and the other pirates opened fire. 22 Pete believed John had died, burned John’s Vivre Card, and escaped the collapsing cave with the surviving crew. 23

John had anticipated the betrayal. He had protected himself with Armament Haki, staged his wounds with sea-beast blood, and altered Pete’s Vivre Card so that it appeared to burn. 23 John then released edited footage framing Pete and the crew for Captain John’s murder and theft, while selling their fingernails as Vivre Card material to parties seeking the treasure. 23 24

Conflict with the World Government

Pete’s crew spent more than half a month stranded near the treasure island, suffering severe dehydration and ship damage while searching for the missing wealth. 29 Desperate for food and water, they attacked five Marine warships. 29

Pete boarded the lead warship and used the Reaction Fruit to immobilize its defenders. He and his crew massacred the frozen Marines and Cipher Pol agents; Pete personally killed the vice admiral and beheaded Somaz and Maffey. 30 Both targets regenerated, leaving Pete unable to understand or permanently defeat them. Exhausted and frightened, he retreated into the ship’s cabin for food and water, allowing them to escape his range. 30
