Background / History
At seventeen, Dragon served as a Marine recruit during the God Valley hunting game. He was ordered to fire tranquilizer rounds at unarmed civilians, only to realize that the people he helped capture were being hunted by Celestial Dragons. When recruits who questioned the orders were executed or imprisoned, Dragon rejected obedience and ran toward the victims’ screams to help. 6
While fleeing through God Valley, Dragon was hunted and wounded by Saint Rimoshifu Max. Despite his fear and inexperience, he deliberately headed toward danger to aid civilians. 7 He later rescued the infant twins Shanks and Shamrock amid the Celestial Dragons’ retreat, treating their safety as his personal redemption for participating in the massacre. 10
Chaychitz Maffey shot Dragon through the shoulder and nearly executed him, but Captain John intervened and drove her away. Dragon escaped with the infants after John demanded to be remembered as their rescuer. 10 11
Following God Valley, Dragon spent nearly three months imprisoned at Marine Headquarters. Garp saved him from harsher punishment by threatening to resign, at the cost of promising lifelong service to the Marines and World Government. Dragon nevertheless resigned, unable to accept the institution’s version of justice. 37
Stranded in Shells Town, Dragon witnessed the persecution of the Felose Chamber of Commerce. He joined Felo Vincent in defending civilians from local gangsters, then saved Vincent from a gunshot at the cost of another wound to his right arm. 38 40 Vincent’s refusal to accept a life of humiliation gave Dragon direction; Dragon decided to accompany him to the Feros Kingdom and join his uprising. 41
