Background / History

Doflamingo led the Donquixote Family in the North Blue, where he operated as a weapons supplier. The Marines identified him as a high-priority target after learning that he intended to seize the Op-Op Fruit from the pirate Barrels before the Navy could purchase it. Tsuru initially planned to ambush him on Swallow Island, but Kane’s analysis exposed the intelligence as likely false and redirected the operation to Minion Island. 4 5

On Minion Island, Rosinante stole the Op-Op Fruit from Barrels before Doflamingo could claim it. Doflamingo’s embedded Marine spy, Vergo, was exposed and captured by Kane, Cuckoo, and Hina; Kane then taunted Doflamingo through Vergo’s Den Den Mushi, provoking him into deploying the Birdcage across the island. 7 8

Doflamingo’s search for Kane and the fruit collapsed as his officers were captured or defeated. He personally confronted Kane, but Tsuru’s arrival neutralized his thread attacks and removed the Birdcage. With his ship sunk and nearby clouds cleared, Doflamingo was unable to escape by sea or by threading through the sky. Tsuru’s force captured him after he attempted to seize a Marine warship. 10 15

While imprisoned, Doflamingo remained defiant and continued to scheme through outside contacts. He appears to have concealed Tsuru’s involvement when seeking Kaido’s assistance, allowing the failed rescue attempt to create hostility between Kane, the Marines, and Kaido’s forces. Doflamingo is a tall man associated with a distinctive flamingo-feather coat and sunglasses. During the Minion Island operation, he was repeatedly described as descending or moving through the air with his coat fluttering behind him. 11 13

Personality

Doflamingo is proud, cruel, and intensely possessive of the people he calls his “family.” Kane’s attacks on his officers and threats against Vergo triggered an unusually uncontrolled outburst of Conqueror’s Haki and drove him to activate the Birdcage in an effort to force Kane into the open. 8 11

He responds to failure with violence and intimidation. After learning that the Op-Op Fruit had been stolen, he executed Barrels; when several officers disappeared, he threatened Pica and suggested he would purge any “trash” or infiltrators within his organization. 11

Despite his anger, Doflamingo is perceptive and politically calculating. He identified Kane’s use of the Six Powers as evidence of a Marine connection, recognized the danger of Tsuru’s pursuit, and appears to have used his own rescue request to provoke conflict between larger powers. 13 38 39
