Background / History
Rayne is a transmigrator whose previous life was that of an office worker. He awakened in the body of a fifteen-year-old Marine Seaman Third Class at Loguetown, initially possessing no talent or skills and only a Basic physique. After personally executing the pirate Bonecrusher Cass, he discovered the Sin Judgment System and used Cass's Body Inheritance to begin strengthening himself. 2 3
He remained at Loguetown as an executioner because the position gave him regular access to condemned pirates. Over his first three months, repeated inheritances raised his physique to Intermediate level, while his immense appetite and rapid growth made him a conspicuous presence at the base. After three veteran Marines attempted to steal his food, Rayne defeated them effortlessly and ended the harassment directed at him. 4
Buck's execution complicated Rayne's view of judgment. Although the system assigned Buck a Crime Index of 270 for killing six people, Buck's memories revealed that he had uncovered a child-trafficking operation, rescued an infant, and surrendered after his crime. Rayne completed Buck's final wish by anonymously delivering his hidden savings to the woman caring for the child, earning a second reward in the process. 5 6
Rayne's defining opportunity came when he was selected to execute Gol D. Roger. He deliberately delayed the fatal shot until Roger proclaimed the existence of his treasure, ensuring that the Great Pirate Era—and Roger's Crime Index—would reach its peak. Roger's execution granted Rayne 458,210 Sin Points and access to Roger's inheritances; Rayne chose Peak Observation Haki rather than Roger's weakened physique or dangerous memories. 11 12
Vice Admiral Tsuru publicly portrayed Rayne as a heroic Marine who withstood Roger's Conqueror's Haki to complete his duty. Rayne accepted the narrative to conceal the truth: his collapse had been caused by the system's overwhelming Haki inheritance. Tsuru later promoted his prospects by placing him in Marineford's Elite Training Camp, and Garp forcibly transported him there. 13 16 18
At Marineford, Rayne concealed his actual strength by manipulating his test results and presenting himself as a merely competent recruit. He privately trained under Commodore Gion, developed friendships with Smoker, Hina, and Rosinante, and mastered the Six Powers while maintaining a deliberately average public profile. 21 25 38 40
After choosing the dangerous internship assignment aboard Vice Admiral Sakazuki's warship, Rayne began operating in the Grand Line. He secretly eliminated the leaders of the Blood Axe Pirates, disguised the massacre as pirate infighting, and drew Sakazuki's suspicion. He later joined a reconnaissance party investigating the Maelstrom Spider Pirates and detected an incoming attack near the wreck of the Seagull 3. 41 47 48 50
Appearance
Rayne's body changed dramatically through Body Inheritance. Within three months, he grew from under 1.6 meters to 1.85 meters; continued growth later brought him to approximately 2.6 meters tall, with a powerful physique comparable to an average Marine Headquarters vice admiral by his own estimate. 4 16
- Tall, broad-shouldered, and heavily muscled despite his age. 4 9
- Slightly bronze skin and a lean, firm build. 9
- Thick hair and dark eyes. 3 42
- Wears black-rimmed Clark Kent's Glasses when he needs to conceal his identity. 42 43
- Previously wore a mask during Loguetown executions, shielding his face from public hostility. 5
Personality
Rayne is pragmatic, cautious, and intensely focused on survival. He considers physical power the foundation of freedom in a world ruled by strength, prioritizing permanent improvements to his physique over flashy skills or short-term rewards. He is willing to exploit historical events, system mechanics, and other people's assumptions if doing so improves his odds of living safely. 3 6 14
He habitually conceals his ability. Rayne fakes exhaustion, injury, inexperience, and unstable power to avoid attention, believing that obvious talent attracts dangerous responsibilities and stronger enemies. He is an accomplished liar when necessary, often using technically true details from the original body's past to make his cover stories convincing. 24 25 29 48
Despite his cold efficiency in battle, Rayne is not indifferent to others. He fulfilled Buck's final wish, secretly saved Rosinante during training, protected him during missions, and buried the desecrated Marine flag after avenging fallen soldiers. His compassion is usually expressed indirectly, without seeking credit or exposing his real strength. 6 25 32 47
Rayne is also comfort-oriented and food-motivated. His enormous appetite, cooking skill, and dislike of poor military meals led him to establish the Midnight Diner group with Smoker and Hina. He has a strong aversion to blood, filth, and handling corpses unnecessarily. 29 32 36
Abilities & Skills
Sin Judgment System
Rayne alone can perceive the Sin Judgment System, which evaluates criminals and grants rewards when he judges them.
- Only targets with a Sin Index of at least 100 can trigger judgment. 2
- Rewards scale with a target's crimes, strength, condition, and Rayne's execution participation rate. 2 6
- The system can judge sinful targets outside formal executions, as confirmed when Rayne killed four assassins who invaded his dormitory. 8
- Available rewards can include Body Inheritance, skill inheritances, talents, memories, equipment, and Sin Points. 2 12
- Last Wish Lists allow Rayne to inherit a criminal's unresolved request; completing one grants an additional reward. 5 6
- The Exchange Shop upgrades abilities Rayne already possesses but cannot directly grant a new physique or unawakened Haki. 7 14
Physique and Body Inheritance
Rayne possesses an Advanced Physique Realm strengthened through the bodies of criminals he has judged.
- His physical strength is sufficient to shatter a massive reef with a casual punch. 9
- His advanced body lets him overwhelm ordinary pirates in unarmed combat and endure the demands of the Marine Six Powers. 8 36
- High-level Body Inheritances from SR-ranked pirates brought him close to the Top-tier Physique Realm. 32 48
- Each major inheritance causes severe hunger and physical strain. 2 6
- Weaker N- and R-rank pirates now provide negligible gains, forcing him to seek stronger targets. 15
Life Return
Rayne possesses Life Return, allowing exceptional control over his body and metabolism.
- Converts food into usable energy and stamina, explaining his massive appetite without significant fat gain. 36
- Lets him regulate heartbeat, blood flow, breathing, and expressions well enough to fake exhaustion during physical training. 25
- Supports his ability to disguise his true physical condition and combat capacity. 25 49
Observation Haki
Rayne inherited Gol D. Roger's Peak Observation Haki and the Voice of All Things.
- Detects distant presences, heartbeats, movements, emotions, and hostile intent across vast areas. 12 15
- Can perceive multiple possible future trajectories and identify the most likely outcome. 13
- Used future sight to predict a nurse's fall and a seabird stealing bread. 13
- Can identify targets several kilometers away and observe activity aboard a distant pirate ship. 15
- Initially overwhelmed Rayne's mind with sensory information, causing him to collapse and bleed from his eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. 12
- His precognition does not compensate for insufficient speed, defense, or physical strength against stronger opponents. 13
Armament Haki
Rayne has Top-tier Armament Haki.
- Coats his body, blade, and small projectiles to increase their offensive power. 16 40 47
- Used a Haki-coated paper pellet to silence Smoker's snoring with precise accuracy. 40 42
- Cut through Blood Axe Grom's massive hammer and killed Kasa with a Haki-enhanced thrust. 47
- Cannot currently be upgraded further because his physique has not yet reached the required level. 16
Swordsmanship
Rayne possesses Top-tier Swordsmanship and fights primarily with a black katana.
- Can release a hundred-meter sword aura capable of splitting a pirate ship from several kilometers away. 15
- Eliminated the Skull-Crushing Pirates with a single crescent-shaped “Moon Arc” slash. 31 32
- Combines swordsmanship with Soru and Armament Haki for swift, decisive kills. 47
- Publicly suppresses his swordsmanship, allowing Gion and other Marines to believe he is an inexperienced trainee. 38 39
Shooting and Marksmanship
Rayne possesses Top-tier Shooting and carries a customized semi-automatic pistol.
- Killed Whipscar Garl with a single long-range shot from several kilometers away. 15
- Uses Observation Haki to locate targets before firing. 15
- Treats firearms as practical tools rather than defining weapons. 14
Stealth, Combat Techniques, and Six Powers
Rayne combines Advanced Stealth, Top-tier Combat Techniques, and Advanced Marine Six Powers.
- Intermediate Stealth gave him the ability to conceal his presence and move through shadows. 7 8
- Advanced Stealth and heightened perception allowed him to identify hidden sentries and traps during the Blood Axe Pirates operation. 45
- Uses Soru for burst movement and assassination-level speed. 47
- Has advanced all six Marine techniques to the system's maximum recognized level. 33 36
Practical Skills
- Cooking — Top-tier: Rayne prepares elaborate meals that make him the center of the Midnight Diner group and secure Gion's cooperation. 36 38
- Navigation — Advanced: Acquired through inheritance and system upgrades. 9 14
- Fishing — Intermediate: Selected as an inheritance during the assault on the Blood Axe Pirates. 46
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Skillful Grade black katana — Customized for rapid slashes and thrusts; Rayne's primary weapon. 14
- Fine semi-automatic pistol — Customized for long-range accuracy and penetration. 14
- Storage Ring — Holds approximately five cubic meters of items; time nearly stops within its storage space. 14
- Clark Kent's Glasses — Prevent others from recognizing Rayne's identity; Rosinante failed to recognize him while he wore them. 42 43
- Small Weather Pot — Can alter the weather within a one-kilometer radius. 36
- Sword-maintenance tools — Whetstones and maintenance oil given by Gion; improved his blade's cutting performance. 42 50
Relationships
- Gol D. Roger — Rayne personally executed Roger and inherited Peak Observation Haki, the Voice of All Things, and 458,210 Sin Points from the judgment. Roger's Legendary Last Wish tasks Rayne with protecting his descendant from an unavoidable death in the future. 12 14
- Vice Admiral Tsuru — Selected Rayne as Roger's executioner, publicly framed him as a Marine hero, and secured his placement in the Elite Training Camp. 10 13 18
- Monkey D. Garp — Forced Rayne to leave Loguetown for Marineford after Tsuru arranged his transfer. Garp is suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Roger's execution. 16 17
- Smoker — Rayne's roommate, initial rival, and eventual close friend. Smoker remains aware that Rayne is hiding extraordinary strength but values their friendship and Rayne's cooking. 24 36 42
- Hina — A Midnight Diner associate who gathers information and ingredients; she remains perceptive and concerned about Rayne's dangerous choices. 29 36 42
- Rosinante — Rayne's friend and frequent partner. Rayne secretly saved him during training and protected him in combat; Rosinante witnessed Rayne's true power but chose not to expose him. 25 47 48
- Commodore Gion — Rayne's private swordsmanship instructor and culinary patron. Their arrangement began after she caught him using the kitchen without authorization; she later gifted him sword-maintenance tools. 38 42
- Vice Admiral Sakazuki — Rayne deliberately chose Sakazuki's warship to encounter stronger pirates. Sakazuki suspects Rayne's explanation for the Blood Axe Pirates' deaths but has not confronted him openly. 41 48 49
- Buck — A condemned pirate whose morally complicated past challenged Rayne's view of justice. Rayne completed Buck's final wish by delivering his hidden savings to the child Buck had tried to protect. 5 6
