Background

Roger was among the major figures present during the God Valley conflict, alongside Rocks, Whitebeard, Golden Lion, Garp, the Holy Knights, and others 4.

By the time the Roger Pirates reached the Country of Endless War, Roger had developed a recurring rivalry with Vice Admiral Garp, who pursued his crew relentlessly. Roger treated Garp’s arrival as an opportunity for another “greeting” rather than an urgent threat 91.

When Xia Luo located the Roger Pirates with Observation Haki, Roger retaliated with Observation Killing. He then fought Xia Luo directly, recognized his potential, and offered him a place aboard the Roger Pirates 91 93. Xia Luo conditionally agreed to consider joining if the crew still existed eight years later; Roger accepted and promised to return for him aboard the Oro Jackson 93.

Roger’s search for the Road Poneglyphs led him to seek someone capable of deciphering them. After Xia Luo mentioned the Kozuki Family of Wano, Roger immediately redirected the crew toward Wano Country 94.

In Wano, Roger defeated Kozuki Oden and the Nine Red Scabbards during their initial encounter. Learning that Oden could read Poneglyphs, he recruited him into the Roger Pirates 141. He later clashed with Whitebeard after Whitebeard defeated Oden, and joined Whitebeard in countering Garp’s surprise attack 142.

In Sea Circle Calendar 1493, Roger was diagnosed with an incurable illness. The Roger Pirates recruited Crocus as ship doctor to preserve Roger’s life long enough to continue their voyage 148.

Personality

Roger is carefree, provocative, and intensely drawn to adventure. He jokes with his crew even when Garp has located them, and treats repeated Marine pursuits as part of the excitement of sailing 91 95.

He values freedom above the World Government’s laws and openly dismisses its prohibition on studying Poneglyphs 94. He is also highly receptive to extraordinary ambitions: he invited Xia Luo to sail with him, admired Rosha’s dream of overthrowing the World Government, and treated that dream as a rival pursuit rather than an insult 93 146.

Despite his playful demeanor, Roger recognizes talent quickly. He recruited Oden for both his strength and his ability to read Poneglyphs, while acknowledging Xia Luo as a rare Marine who possessed Conqueror’s Haki and independent ideals 93 141.

During the conflict, Roger revealed that he was searching for Road Poneglyphs and changed the crew’s intended route to Wano after receiving information about the Kozuki Family 94.

Eight-Year Promise

Roger offered Xia Luo a place in the Roger Pirates, arguing that a person with Conqueror’s Haki should not remain bound to the Marines or World Government. Xia Luo agreed only on the condition that the Roger Pirates still existed eight years later; Roger accepted the agreement enthusiastically 93.

Wano Country
