Background / History
Rangiku encountered Tachikawa Shin in the Gokō District, the 80th district of Rukon, several years before the story. Recognizing that his spiritual pressure was unusually high for a civilian, she recommended that he enter the Spirit Training Academy and become a Shinigami. 1 4
As Tenth Division lieutenant under Captain Shiba Isshin, she repeatedly attempted to recruit Shin after his graduation. She initially offered him the 23rd Seat, later testing his combat ability at the academy after Isshin considered offering an Upper Seat Officer position. Shin defeated her in their spar after reading through her attacks, but Rangiku continued to regard him as an exceptional talent. 4 5
When Shin awakened a Kidō-type Zanpakutō, Rangiku feared the Fourth Division would claim him instead, believing his potential could eventually reach lieutenant or captain level. 18 Shin ultimately became Captain of the Tenth Division, while Rangiku remained its lieutenant. 159 171

Following Shin’s abuse of authority against her, Rangiku becomes withdrawn, drinks excessively, takes leave from the Tenth Division, and seeks a transfer to the Eighth Division. 188 189 191 192 She eventually resumes her lieutenant duties, but her later professional reconciliation with Shin does not erase the emotional distance between them. 202 203 214 250
