Background / History
Academy inspection and recruitment
As Fifth Division Captain, Aizen visited the Spirit Training Academy with Ichimaru Gin and was received by Student Council President Tachikawa Shin. He praised Shin’s establishment of the Student Council, had already investigated his academic performance and division preferences, and offered him a place in the Fifth Division. Shin declined because his newly awakened healing-type Zanpakutō suited the Fourth Division. 15
During the visit, Aizen noticed the thin layer of Reishi surrounding Shin and questioned whether it was a Zanpakutō ability. He later taught a Class A Kidō lesson personally, corrected each student’s casting, and prevented Renji Abarai from injuring himself with Bakudō #31. 15 16
Covert probes of Tachikawa Shin
Aizen’s interest in Shin developed into repeated tests. He arranged a field-trip incident to assess Hinamori Momo, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai, while also observing Shin’s conduct. 40
He and Gin monitored Shin’s encounter with a Gillian through surveillance screens. Rather than being concerned that the planned rescue had become unnecessary, Aizen regarded Shin’s unharmed reappearance and effortless victory as an unexpected surprise. 43
Aizen later had Tōsen Kaname attack Shin under concealment. The resulting investigation blamed Urahara Kisuke, though Shin concluded that Aizen had manipulated the evidence through Kyōka Suigetsu. 62 63 65 206
Rise in Hueco Mundo and betrayal
Before his open defection, Aizen had already taken control of Hueco Mundo, including its Vastolorde-class combatants. This made him a looming threat to Soul Society even before the extent of his conspiracy became public. 197 205
At the Ishida residence, Aizen met openly with Shin, Gin, Urahara, and the Visored. He revealed that he had prepared for either Shin’s defeat of the Arrancar or Gin exposing his crimes, while seeking an arrangement over the approaching Quincy threat. 234 235
Aizen subsequently abandoned his restrained Captain persona, summoned the Espada through Garganta, and departed for Hueco Mundo. 236
Open defection
During the battle in the replicated space, Shin publicly identified Aizen as the Arrancar leader and named Tōsen as his accomplice. 238
Aizen infiltrated the Great Spirit Library Corridor, massacred the Central 46, defeated Komamura with one finger, and escaped with Tōsen after revealing his betrayal. 239 240 242
When Yamamoto’s flames threatened the Espada, Aizen used Hadō #81: Dankū to block the attack. He then disclosed Kyōka Suigetsu’s Complete Hypnosis, forcing Yamamoto to halt rather than risk striking allies under illusion. 241 242
Conflict with the Quincy
Aizen later confronted Quincy forces in Hueco Mundo, using Kyōka Suigetsu to make Lille Barro shoot Bambietta and Askin by mistake. He then infiltrated the Wandenreich and met Yugram Haschwalth. 258 259
Haschwalth invited Aizen to join the Wandenreich, stating that Yhwach considered him a special individual. Aizen rejected the offer, attacked with Hadō #63: Raikōhō, and declared that a foretold defeat did not make Yhwach worthy of his fear. 260 265
Appearance
Aizen initially presents himself as a refined, gentle young Captain whose calm smile and vast Reiatsu immediately inspire goodwill among academy students. 15
- Short brown hair and black-rimmed glasses during his Fifth Division Captain persona. 15
- Wore the white haori of the Fifth Division while serving in the Gotei 13. 15
- Shattered his glasses when abandoning his conciliatory façade before the Visored and Arrancar. 236
- Later wears a fitted white robe with a black inner hem as Hueco Mundo’s ruler. 258
Personality
Aizen is highly polished, patient, and socially adept. As a Captain, he speaks modestly, teaches students individually, praises effort, and frames intrusive questions as harmless curiosity. This demeanor earns him broad admiration within Soul Society. 15 16 179
Behind this persona, he is calculating and relentlessly inquisitive. He tests promising people through carefully engineered dangers, evaluates their usefulness, and keeps even close subordinates under suspicion. Gin later realizes that Aizen had never truly trusted him, despite retaining him at his side. 43 206 235
Aizen considers exceptional individuals fundamentally isolated from ordinary understanding. He rejects established Soul Society order as a shackle on evolution and treats humility, loyalty, and morality as tools rather than obligations. 234 240
His confidence borders on absolute arrogance. He dismisses fear of Yhwach because Yhwach failed once before, and refuses Haschwalth’s invitation even when told that his defeat is inevitable. 260 265
Abilities & Skills

Aizen’s Zanpakutō, Kyōka Suigetsu, grants Complete Hypnosis. It controls all five senses and can alter a target’s perception of form, image, quality, touch, and smell. 242
- Makes opponents mistake allies, enemies, and surroundings for entirely different targets. 242
- Caused Lille Barro to mistake Bambietta and Askin for Aizen, resulting in both being shot. 259
- Its threat prevented Yamamoto from continuing his attack, as he could not verify whether Aizen or his own subordinates stood in the line of fire. 242
- Shin claims his own “Stagnation” ability prevents Kyōka Suigetsu from affecting him through external interference. 206

Overwhelming Reiatsu and Combat Ability

- Defeated Komamura Sajin’s full attack with a single raised finger. 240
- Blocked Yamamoto’s flames with Dankū when the Espada’s released forms could not withstand them. 241
