Background
Kokoro left Fish-Man Island to see the wider world and demonstrate that fish-men and merfolk could live and earn respect in human society. Her life in Water 7 was marked by discrimination, loneliness, and homesickness, but she remained determined to establish herself there. 109
She became Tom’s capable secretary at Tom’s Workers, helping the shipyard operate in human society despite the prejudice directed at its fish-man and mermaid staff. As a Silver Fish-Man under thirty, she must keep her tail submerged for at least four hours each day or risk her scales drying and cracking. 98 100 102
Appearance
Kokoro is a golden-haired young mermaid with azure eyes and a silver fish tail. Her tail remains visible on land rather than changing into human legs. 97 98
- Golden hair and blue/azure eyes 97
- Silver tail with pearl-like scales 97 102
- Often keeps her tail in water while working or resting on land 102 109
- Wears practical work clothes at the shipyard; during a night off, she wore a light-blue slit dress that exposed her tail 109
Personality
Kokoro is shrewd, observant, and skilled at negotiation. When Lin Nuo first offered to solve Tom’s problems, she deliberately emphasized Silver Axe’s danger to test his confidence and improve Tom’s position in the negotiation. 98
She is highly responsible and takes pride in solving problems herself. Although grateful when Lin Nuo defended her from Water 7’s racist agitators, she later admitted that his intervention had frustrated her because he said what she wanted to say herself. 101 109
Kokoro is also courageous and loyal. She accepted danger to travel with Lin Nuo, sabotaged Marine ships during the Sabaody conflict, and secretly returned through the deep sea to rescue Lin Nuo and Gunko when their vessel was destroyed. 112 148 162
Abilities & Skills
Mermaid Karate
Kokoro uses Mermaid Karate to defend workers, fight pirates, and conduct underwater sabotage.
- Water Surge — Compresses moisture from the air into a high-pressure water strike; she used it to defeat multiple pirates while avoiding nearby Bulu Rentals employees. 97
- Sea Current Shoulder Throw — A technique Kokoro prepared to use against an attacker who tried to ambush her from behind. 97
- Broke the keels of approximately ten Marine ships from below the waterline, delaying reinforcements during the Sabaody battle. 148
- Attacked Captain John’s flagship underwater, punching holes into its hull and forcing it to take on water. 119
Underwater Mobility and Rescue
As a Silver Fish-Man, Kokoro is exceptionally mobile in the sea and can operate effectively at extreme depths.
- Scouted the submerged half of Giant Wave Shipyard’s warehouse to confirm that its Treasure Tree Adam stock had been moved. 102
- Guided multiple pirate crews safely through Fish-Man Island’s dangerous undersea currents and canyon route. 156
- Escaped a pursuit by a powerful female Marine, implied to be Tsuru, by using her superior underwater speed. 148
- Rescued Lin Nuo and Gunko from Sea Kings after their bubble-coated ship ruptured roughly 5,000 meters beneath the surface. 162
Shipyard Administration and Logistics
Kokoro’s value to Tom’s Workers extends beyond combat.
- Managed workers, cargo vessels, and the return transport of Treasure Tree Adam lumber from Shipwreck Island. 102
- Identified the connections between Giant Wave Shipyard, corrupt timber merchants, Kardore, and Silver Axe’s group. 98 102
- Proposed using the Memory Seahorse’s extracted memories to expose the conspiracy and restore Tom’s relationships with timber suppliers. 102
- Organized a successor, prepared notes and contact lists, and personally trained the replacement before leaving Water 7. 112
- Helped develop the early Puffing Tom concept with Tom and hoped to consult Vegapunk on its power and stability problems. 110
Relationships
- Lin Nuo — Initially met him when he intervened during a pirate attack at Bulu Rentals. She became his guide and partner during the Water 7 crisis, then joined his fleet as navigator’s assistant and affairs officer. Their relationship develops through mutual trust, teasing, and open affection. 97 102 112 163 179 182
- Tom — Employer, mentor, and longtime friend. Kokoro served as Tom’s secretary and helped manage his shipyard; Tom supported her decision to sail with Lin Nuo and seek new engineering knowledge. 97 110 112
- Ginny — Fellow crewmate who treated Kokoro protectively after her Marine sabotage mission and later helped reassure her when Lin Nuo remained behind at Sabaody. 148 155
- Alice — Fellow crewmate who helped care for Kokoro during her recovery and supported her integration into Lin Nuo’s crew. 112 155
- Gunko — Friend rescued alongside Lin Nuo in the deep sea. Kokoro accepted Gunko after learning of her connection to Brook and later escorted her to Ryugu Palace. 163 164
- Brook — A crewmate connected to Gunko’s forgotten past; Kokoro considers Gunko a friend in part because of that connection. 163
Story Role
Water 7 Shipyard Crisis
Kokoro defended Bulu Rentals employees from pirates attempting to seize Sea Cows, using Mermaid Karate to incapacitate the attackers. Lin Nuo then disabled a pirate attempting to ambush her, leading to their first meeting. 97
She introduced Lin Nuo to Tom’s shipyard and revealed that Silver Axe, Babel, Giant Wave Shipyard, and blocked Treasure Tree Adam supplies had paralyzed its construction work. Kokoro helped Lin Nuo investigate the supply chain, recover the timber from Shipwreck Island, and prepare evidence exposing the rival shipyard’s corruption. 98 102
After Tom agreed to build the Mike, Kokoro chose to leave Water 7 with Lin Nuo. She ensured the shipyard would remain stable by training a replacement and organizing all of her responsibilities before departure. 110 112
Member of Lin Nuo’s Fleet
Lin Nuo formally assigned Kokoro as navigator’s assistant and affairs officer when she boarded the Mike. 112
During Captain John’s attack in the Florian Triangle, she used underwater mobility to damage the enemy flagship from below while Kuma, Moria, Silver Axe, and Babel fought above deck. 119
At Sabaody, Kokoro independently sabotaged Marine reinforcements by breaking the keels of roughly ten ships. She escaped pursuit but suffered wounds to her waist and ribs, requiring treatment aboard the Kuja Pirates’ ship. 148 155
Return to Fish-Man Island
Kokoro guided the allied fleet through the deep-sea route to Fish-Man Island. After learning that Lin Nuo had remained behind at Sabaody as a rear guard, she was distressed enough to consider returning alone, but Roger persuaded her to trust Lin Nuo’s plan. 155 156
Later, she secretly returned to search for Lin Nuo and rescued both him and Gunko from the deep sea. Her actions confirmed to Lin Nuo that she regarded him as family. 162 163
Lin Nuo subsequently appointed Kokoro as his envoy to King Neptune and Ryugu Palace. She later agreed to remain on Fish-Man Island temporarily as the fleet’s trusted local liaison, monitoring the Teleportation Array and the island’s situation until freer travel becomes possible. 164 179
