Background
Kuma was among the enslaved youths forced to flee through God Valley’s jungle during the Celestial Dragons’ Human Hunting Game. A fish-man slave freed his restraints alongside Ivankov’s, after which Kuma joined Ivankov, Ginny, and Lin Nuo in their attempt to escape and steal the competition’s Devil Fruits. 1
During the treasury raid, Kuma opened a chest containing the Paw-Paw Fruit and ate it at Lin Nuo’s urging. His first instinct after gaining the power was to use it to save others, including attempting to send Lin Nuo to safety. 2
Kuma remained on God Valley after the initial escape and used his new ability to send groups of slaves away from the island. He later chose to join Lin Nuo’s seemingly impossible plan to evacuate the fighters confronting Imu, even though he had not yet mastered precise destinations and Imu’s Haki severely suppressed his Devil Fruit. 6 8 9
Appearance
Kuma is a young, slightly chubby Buccaneer with a notably powerful body. After consuming the Paw-Paw Fruit, pink paw pads appear on his palms. 3 36 43
- Identified as a member of the Buccaneer Tribe. 43 49
- Has pink, paw-shaped pads on both palms. 3
- Possesses exceptional physical strength, including the ability to move heavy food barrels and cargo with ease. 39
- His unusually large, powerful physique is valuable enough that the World Government seeks to capture him alive for his Lineage Factor. 43 55
Personality
Kuma is consistently compassionate, quiet, and self-sacrificing. Even immediately after gaining his Devil Fruit, he focuses on saving people rather than himself; at God Valley, he remains behind to repel slaves to safety and later volunteers for an extremely dangerous rescue effort against Imu. 2 6 8
He carries an intense sense of responsibility for those he cares about. When Lin Nuo is unconscious, Kuma prepares to take on all of Lin Nuo’s accumulated pain, believing his strong body exists to protect his loved ones. 36
Despite his reserved manner, Kuma is dependable in a crisis. He acts decisively when Lin Nuo falls unconscious during their escape from Tenpan City, saving the entire group before they can crash. 35
Kuma’s selflessness extends beyond his immediate companions. On Drum Island, he removes the pain and injuries of an entire afflicted village and transfers their suffering into his own body, despite the severe risk to himself. This experience leads him to view the Paw-Paw Fruit as a means to help people and potentially change the world. 74
Though he harbors hatred toward the World Government for its treatment of his people, Kuma hesitates when faced with the corpse of the agent Fera, revealing that his compassion restrains his desire for vengeance. 57
Abilities & Skills
Paw-Paw Fruit
Kuma’s Devil Fruit allows him to repel targets and phenomena with the paw pads on his hands. He uses it primarily for evacuation, rescue, defensive repositioning, transportation, and increasingly, combat. 2 3 82
- Can repel people over enormous distances, including himself. 3
- Can launch targets with Paw Shock for rapid aerial movement. 8
- Can use Pressure: Ejection to send a target away inside a protective bubble. 13
- Can use Compression: Ejection to save multiple falling people at once. 35
- Can extract pain and injuries into a red Pain Bubble that another person may absorb. 36
- Can remove pain and injury from multiple people, though transferring the accumulated burden to himself can leave him critically weakened. 74
- Can return accumulated pain and injuries to an enemy, as demonstrated by using Ivankov’s Pain Bubble against a CP0 agent. 76 82
- Can repel physical projectiles and attacks, including a barrage of Rankyaku wind blades, reversing their direction, speed, and force toward their attacker. 82
- Can compress and release air as a directed shockwave, creating propulsion for the White Shell. 41 47
- Can form Pressure Cannon attacks capable of breaking through powerful flames or overwhelming opponents with compressed-air force. 83 103
- Can use Pressure: Fūrai Cannon to propel the White Shell at extreme speed by releasing a massive paw-shaped sphere of compressed air. 83
- Can create air cushions beneath his feet to move silently during infiltration. 140
- Seastone cuffs severely weaken him and suppress his ability. 25
- Imu’s overwhelming Haki can interfere with or temporarily prevent his Devil Fruit from functioning. 9 13
Rescue and Evacuation
Kuma’s greatest strength is the practical, compassionate application of his power under pressure.

Combat Skills
Kuma has developed from a primarily rescue-oriented Devil Fruit user into a capable close-range combatant.
- Learns from combat memories implanted through the Memory Seahorse, which include experience with Haki, the Six Powers, and Devil Fruit combat. 68
- Uses Soru to cross twenty meters instantly and catch an enemy before they can react. 82
- Uses Armament Haki and Iron Body: Empty Wood to withstand attacks from armed guards. 140
- Uses Observation Haki to navigate the Celestial Dragons’ residence and locate his targets while avoiding guards. 140
- Coordinates effectively with Moria, combining Paw Shock and pressure attacks with shadow techniques to defeat CP0 agents. 82 83
- Rescues Moria from Babel by striking the Flame-Flame Fruit user with Paw Shock and opening an escape route with Pressure Cannon. 103
Physical Strength
Kuma’s body is exceptionally strong even apart from his Devil Fruit. He describes this strength as something given to him so that he can protect those dear to him. 36
- Carries heavy barrels and sacks during the White Shell crew’s preparations. 39
- Endures the strain of repeated Paw-Paw Fruit use during emergencies. 8 35
- Continues to act despite injuries, exhaustion, and imprisonment. 11 25
- Defeats guards during his GR 1 infiltration through a combination of physical power, Haki, and pressure attacks. 140
- Withstands armed sword strikes through Armament Haki and Iron Body before counterattacking. 140
Relationships
- Lin Nuo — Kuma’s rescuer, ally, and close companion. Lin Nuo directs him to eat the Paw-Paw Fruit, heals his injuries, and repeatedly trusts him with evacuation plans; Kuma develops profound gratitude and repeatedly risks himself to protect him. Lin Nuo also guides Kuma toward using Pain Bubbles offensively rather than bearing every burden himself. 2 3 13 36 74 76
- Ivankov — Fellow God Valley escapee and trusted friend. Kuma sends Ivankov away during the encirclement, and the two later endure imprisonment together in Tenpan City. Kuma also protects the injured Ivankov during the CP0 attack and weaponizes Ivankov’s extracted pain against their enemy. 3 25 82
- Ginny — Fellow escapee and close companion. Kuma remains concerned for her safety during their separation, while Ginny offers to share Lin Nuo’s Pain Bubble with him. He also reassures Ginny that she is already valuable to the crew despite her insecurity about becoming stronger. 3 25 36 78
- Rocks D. Zebek — Temporarily relies on Kuma to evacuate Lin Nuo from God Valley; Rocks creates the opening that lets Kuma overcome Imu’s Haki interference. Kuma later serves as the alliance’s emergency escape safeguard in a prospective confrontation involving Rocks and the World Government. 13 135
- Moria — White Shell crewmate and frequent combat partner. They cooperate to defend and repair the ship during the Calm Belt Sea King attack, defeat CP0 agents through coordinated shadow and Paw-Paw techniques, and escape Babel’s attack in Water 7. 41 82 83 103
- Alice and Teach — White Shell crewmates whom Kuma helps protect during the crew’s voyage. Kuma safely transports Alice, Teach, and supplies to Little Garden in a Paw-Paw bubble. 38 41 67
- Kureha and the Drum Island villagers — Kureha treats Kuma after he saves the afflicted villagers by taking all of their suffering into himself. The villagers regard him with gratitude and remorse, while Kuma’s actions give Kureha a deeper understanding of his ability. 74
- Celestial Dragons — Kuma holds three Celestial Dragons hostage during the Sabaody conflict, using their capture to pressure the World Government and divide its forces. 140 144
Story Role / Major Arcs
God Valley Incident
Kuma escapes the Human Hunting Game with Ivankov and Ginny, obtains the Paw-Paw Fruit, and uses it to save Ivankov and numerous other slaves. He later partners with Lin Nuo in an attempt to rescue the fighters battling Imu, but Imu’s Haki suppresses his ability near the battlefield. 1 2 6 8 9
After Lin Nuo’s Phoenix chains restrain Imu, Kuma succeeds in sending the unconscious Lin Nuo away from God Valley. The immense Haki clash disrupts his intended destinations, scattering Lin Nuo and other survivors across nearby regions instead. 13 34
During Imu’s return attack, Kuma attempts to reach and protect the injured Lin Nuo, only to be impaled by Imu’s dark spears. He survives after receiving aid from Lin Nuo’s regenerative flames. 11 12
Tenpan City Captivity and Rescue
Kuma stays behind during an escape attempt so others can flee, but is captured and restrained with Seastone cuffs. He is held with Ivankov and Ginny as a prize for the gang-controlled arena competition. 25 29
Lin Nuo eventually breaks the three out of their cages and frees Kuma’s restraints. During their escape, Kuma explains that he avoided sending the group to his homeland because hidden World Government agents there could have exposed them. 34
White Shell Voyage
Kuma joins the White Shell crew’s journey toward the Grand Line. He contributes to the crew’s travel by using compressed-air bursts to propel the ship, protects it from Sea Kings in the Calm Belt, and assists with emergency repairs. 38 41 47
At Whiskey Peak, a white-suited stranger identifies Kuma as a Buccaneer and begins following him through supernatural doors, placing him in immediate danger from agents interested in his lineage. 43 49
World Government Pursuit and Training
Kuma, Ginny, and Ivankov are drugged and captured at Whiskey Peak after accepting food from disguised enemies. The World Government imprisons Kuma and the others inside the separate dimension created by the Door-Door Fruit user Fera, while its broader operation identifies Kuma as a live-capture target. 51 55
Lin Nuo rescues Kuma from Fera’s dimensional prison. Afterward, Kuma confronts his anger toward the World Government but does not act on it, while Lin Nuo decides that Kuma, Ginny, and Ivankov require serious combat training. 57
Kuma later receives combat memories through the Memory Seahorse and begins incorporating the Six Powers into his fighting style. On Drum Island, he saves a village by taking its collective pain and injuries into himself, leading to his realization that the Paw-Paw Fruit can be used to help change the world. 68 74
During the CP0 pursuit near Jaya, Kuma and Moria defeat elite agents through teamwork. Kuma repels an entire barrage of Rankyaku, uses Soru to deliver Ivankov’s Pain Bubble to an enemy, and unveils the ship-launching Pressure: Fūrai Cannon to escape an approaching Hunting Squad. 82 83
Water 7 and Sabaody Archipelago Conflict
At Water 7, Kuma intervenes when Babel overwhelms Moria. He strikes Babel with Paw Shock, then uses Pressure Cannon to open a gap through the fish-man’s Flame Wave and evacuate Moria from the burning district. 103
During the Sabaody Archipelago conflict, Lin Nuo designates Kuma as the allied pirates’ final evacuation safeguard because of his improved long-range Paw-Paw Fruit mastery. 135
Kuma instead undertakes a covert mission in GR 1, infiltrating the Celestial Dragons’ residence with air-cushion stealth, Observation Haki, Soru, Armament Haki, and pressure attacks. He defeats the guards and captures three Celestial Dragons as hostages, forcing Tsuru and the World Government to redirect personnel from the larger battle. 140
When Kuma publicly displays the hostages, Lin Nuo uses their capture to demand that the World Government lift its encirclement and permit the alliance to complete its ship coating and leave Sabaody. 144
Fish-Man Island Assembly
Kuma accompanies Lin Nuo, Ginny, Ivankov, and the wider pirate alliance to Fish-Man Island. He attends the Coral Council Hall assembly alongside Roger, Whitebeard, Rocks, Linlin, Kaido, Fisher Tiger, King Neptune, and Queen Otohime. 169
At the assembly, Kuma stands among Lin Nuo’s core companions as Lin Nuo proposes an unprecedented alliance of pirate factions and Fish-Man Island, ultimately revealing that its purpose is to defeat Imu. 169
