Background / History

Moria began sailing in the West Blue at age ten with a small crew and the ambition to become its hero. Four years before the Water 7 incident, Silver Axe’s crew destroyed his ship, killed or scattered his companions, and stole their treasure; Babel then threw Moria into the sea. He survived only because a fishing boat found him after a day and night adrift, leaving him with a lasting hatred of Babel and Silver Axe. 99

Lin Nuo identified Moria as a young, ruthless but potentially loyal fighter and intended to train him before failure could break his spirit. Moria later joined Lin Nuo’s group after secretly swimming after the White Shell, furious that Lin Nuo’s harsh training had nearly killed him. 18 21

Before gaining a Devil Fruit, Moria trained intensely, completing one thousand push-ups and asking Lin Nuo to teach him Haki. Lin Nuo instead stressed physical conditioning, stamina, willpower, and life-or-death experience as the foundation for future growth. 22

During the Tenpan City rescue operation, Roy discovered the Shadow-Shadow Fruit and gave it to Moria without hesitation, calling him a core crew member. Moria ate it immediately, gaining the ability to manipulate and steal shadows. 31 He first applied the power in combat against Wade, pinning and severing Wade’s shadow before Roy launched the enemy into sunlight. 33

Moria subsequently developed zombies from defeated enemies’ corpses, beginning with Fera. He expanded this force with Gerlo, Dorum, shadow soldiers, and later Captain John’s powerful shadow. 58 67 121 His undead forces became a central part of the crew’s fighting strength, defense, labor, reconnaissance, and battlefield control. 73 108 137

At Water 7, Moria confronted Babel, the fish-man responsible for destroying his first crew. Although Babel overwhelmed him, Moria survived through deception and Kuma’s intervention. Lin Nuo later subdued Babel and Silver Axe rather than killing them, placing both former Rocks Pirates officers under Moria’s command. 99 103 104 106

Moria is a pale, intimidating youth whose appearance frequently causes strangers and rescued children to fear him before seeing his behavior. 28

Personality

Despite his menacing appearance and blunt manner, he can be unexpectedly gentle. He fed and watched over rescued children in Tenpan City, and Glen recognized that Moria understood what it meant to be judged by appearance. 28

He is opportunistic and enjoys treasure hunting, collecting shadows, and expanding his zombie force. He also displays a cruel streak toward enemies, casually threatening to steal shadows or turn defeated opponents into resources for his army. 47 64 87 121

Moria is fiercely loyal once he accepts someone as a comrade. Roy’s trust deeply affected him, and he eventually came to recognize Lin Nuo as his captain, asking permission before taking Captain John’s shadow. 31 121
