Appearance
An elderly martial artist with white hair and a white beard, Dao Bailie carries a golden saber and has an outwardly cold, domineering bearing. His attempts at friendliness tend to look stiff rather than natural. 163 165
- Wields a golden saber. 167
- Has tiger-like eyes and an imposing presence. 164 173
- His forced smile is notably more intimidating than reassuring. 165
Personality
Dao Bailie is intensely devoted to saber arts. Despite his standing as one of Great Xia’s foremost Innate experts, he humbles himself before Lu Shaolin after witnessing the Divine Grade Wind-Slaying Saber Art, accepting him as master solely for a chance to learn it. 164 166
He is loyal, diligent, and highly formal toward Lu. He repeatedly volunteers for dangerous missions, guards Lu during secluded cultivation, manages the household in his absence, and immediately obeys orders. 167 194 235 236
His martial obsession can become exhausting: he follows Lu around asking questions about the Wind-Slaying Saber Art, while Lu eventually sends him away to escape the constant inquiries. 167 He nevertheless shows sound judgment, arguing that Lu must gain experience through hardship rather than be sheltered at headquarters. 164
Abilities & Skills
Saber Mastery

- Trains Ma San in saber techniques after moving into Lu Shaolin’s residence. 183
Wind-Slaying Saber Art
After seeing Lu Shaolin use the Divine Grade technique, Dao Bailie becomes Lu’s disciple in order to learn it. 166
- Spends an entire morning under Lu’s instruction and only barely reaches the threshold of the art. 167
- His difficulty entering the technique illustrates the exceptional complexity of Divine Grade martial skills. 167
- Continues asking Lu for instruction and clarification whenever possible. 167

Story Role / Major Arcs
Three-Provinces Grand Tournament
Dao Bailie oversees the Three-Provinces Grand Tournament alongside Commander Xia Bingran. He is introduced as Central Province’s Saber King and watches Lu Shaolin defeat all twelve opposing guards in minutes before formally announcing Gold Province’s victory. 163
Testing Lu Shaolin
At Xia Bingran’s order, Dao Bailie tests Lu Shaolin’s claimed Half-Step Innate strength with an Early Innate-level True Qi defense. Lu cuts through it with two saber strikes, earning Dao’s respect and curiosity. 164
Becoming Lu Shaolin’s Disciple
Dao Bailie invites Lu to dinner at Peerless Flavor Tower, then asks to become his disciple after learning that Lu created the Divine Grade Wind-Slaying Saber Art. Lu accepts, and Dao pledges himself to learning the technique. 166
Sky Patrol Service
Dao Bailie accompanies Lu on Outer Regions investigations, explains the demon threat, intervenes with local officials on Lu’s behalf, and publicly acknowledges Lu as his master before the other Sky Patrol Guards. 167 169 173
Carefree Residence
After Lu’s return to the capital, Dao Bailie moves into Carefree Residence with Sun Ning. He becomes part of Lu’s household, teaches Ma San saber arts, and helps oversee the residence while Lu travels. 183 194
Supporting Lu’s Breakthroughs
Dao Bailie guards Lu during his large-scale closed-door cultivation, transports manuals and natural treasures, and remains outside the weapons storehouse while Lu achieves Dharma Form True Body. 235 236
Widening Gap
As Lu’s strength rises beyond the Innate Realm, Dao Bailie increasingly cannot keep up with him. Lu leaves him behind for distant expeditions because Dao’s movement skill and survival ability are insufficient, though Dao remains determined to cultivate until he can serve at Lu’s side again. 193 433
Notable Quotes
“The accomplished are teachers. There is nothing in this world that can be exchanged for this saber art.” 166
“A fledgling eagle can only spread its wings and soar after weathering wind and rain.” 164
Trivia
- Dao Bailie is a peak Innate expert, yet he willingly kneels to become the disciple of the much younger Lu Shaolin. 166
- He initially asks Lu to call him “Little Dao” or “Daozi,” but Lu chooses to continue calling him by his name. 166
- Lu repeatedly describes Dao Bailie as too slow for his later journeys, much to Dao’s disappointment. 188 193 433
