Harry wanted to say something else, but Vera gently pressed her hand. "Go on. I'll catch up soon."
In the end, at Vera's insistence, Harry and Hermione reluctantly followed Percy toward Gryffindor.
After all the new students had left, Professor McGonagall walked over to Vera, her expression much gentler. "Miss Black, Professor Dumbledore has explained your situation to me. As your Head of House, I need to ensure that your studies and daily life at Hogwarts proceed smoothly."
Vera nodded and quietly waited for her to continue.
McGonagall adjusted her glasses. She waved her wand, and a flash of silver light appeared. "First, this—the Enhanced Levitation Charm. It will allow your wheelchair to move freely anywhere, without being hindered by stairs."
Vera nodded lightly. "Thank you, Professor."
"Second," McGonagall said after a moment's thought, "your dormitory arrangements. Considering your special circumstances, we have prepared a private room for you.
However, if there are classmates you would like to share a dormitory with, you need to tell me now. I will have the house-elves make arrangements in advance."
As she spoke, she glanced meaningfully toward the Marble Staircase—Harry and Hermione were crouched behind the railing, peeking over at them. Upon being discovered, they hurriedly ducked back out of sight.
The corners of Vera's lips lifted slightly. "They're a little... overprotective of me."
A hint of amusement flashed in Professor McGonagall's eyes. "Friendship is one of Hogwarts' most precious treasures."
After thinking for a moment, Vera raised her head and said softly, "If possible, I would like to room with Harry Potter and Hermione Granger."
Professor McGonagall nodded slightly and tapped her wand. A piece of parchment flew from her sleeve and automatically changed the names written on it. "It has already been arranged. The house-elves will make the necessary modifications to your dormitory."
She paused, a trace of warmth showing through her serious expression. "Miss Black, Hogwarts will do its best to meet every student's needs. If you encounter any difficulties in your studies or daily life, you may come to me at any time."
"Thank you, Professor." Vera's eyes curved with a smile.
Vera pushed her wheelchair and followed Professor McGonagall through the brightly lit stairways.
Under the effects of the Enhanced Levitation Charm, she did not need to expend any magic at all to steadily float her wheelchair upward and easily ascend the stairs.
They arrived at the entrance to Gryffindor Tower, where the Fat Lady's portrait studied Vera curiously. "Another Black? How unusual."
"The new password is 'Dragon Scum,'" Professor McGonagall said. "Go in. Miss Potter and Miss Granger are already waiting for you."
After bidding McGonagall good night, Vera softly spoke the password, and the Gryffindor common room appeared before her—
It was a cozy circular room filled with plush armchairs. The fire crackled in the fireplace, and red and gold decorations could be seen everywhere.
The moment they saw that she had finally caught up, Harry and Hermione leaped up from the sofa and hurried excitedly to Vera's side.
"Our room is over there!" Harry pointed excitedly at a door in the girls' dormitory with a golden nameplate hanging from it. "The three of us are sharing a room! And the house-elves have already modified it!"
The girls arrived at their dormitory door. Their three names were written in gilded letters on the plaque.
When they pushed the door open, they found a spacious circular room, far larger than an ordinary dormitory—clearly modified specifically to make it easier for a wheelchair to move around.
Three four-poster beds were arranged in a fan shape, each draped in dark crimson curtains, with exquisitely carved lions decorating the bedposts.
Vera's bed was in the middle, slightly lower than the other two, with grab bars specially installed by the headboard.
On the other side of the room stood three desks side by side, each with a brass lamp on top.
Most surprising of all, there was a comfortable sitting area in the corner, furnished with a thick carpet, several armchairs, and a small tea table.
"This is even better than I imagined!" Harry cheered, throwing herself onto her bed and rolling over on it. "A real four-poster bed! And it's so spacious!"
Hermione had already begun organizing her books, sorting them by subject on the shelves. "Look! They even prepared bookshelves for us!"
Vera wheeled herself to her bed and noticed a familiar potion bottle on the bedside table—it was the Nerve Soothing Potion brewed by Snape. Beside it was a small note: "Take daily, same dosage as usual. —S.S."
She gently picked up the bottle, her fingertips brushing over the cool glass as mixed emotions rose within her.
"What's that?" Harry leaned closer curiously, her green eyes sparkling in the candlelight.
"A soothing potion," Vera answered briefly, setting the bottle back down. "It eases the pain in my spine and lower body."
Harry froze for a moment, blinking awkwardly. "Sorry..."
Vera shook her head. "It's nothing. You don't need to apologize."
Author's Note: Would I say that I wrote a gender-swapped Harry because I wanted to see Vera surrounded by enemies on all sides later on? And regarding the question some readers raised about the blue bar, you can think of it this way: the female lead is paraplegic, her body is damaged, so her use of magic is limited too. That's roughly it.
Hogwarts' Secrets
Seeing Harry's eyes dim with guilt, Vera sighed silently and gently patted the back of Harry's hand, changing the subject. "By the way, where did Nox go?"
Hermione's attention was immediately drawn away. "Yes, we haven't seen her since the feast began."
Harry hurriedly looked around. "Ah, there she is!"
She pointed toward a cat tree in the corner of the room, thoughtfully prepared by the house-elves.
Nox was curled elegantly atop the highest padded platform, her amber eyes half-closed as the tip of her tail swayed gently.
"She really knows how to enjoy herself." Harry walked over with a smile and stroked Nox's head.
The cat lazily rubbed against her fingers and let out a satisfied purr.
Vera watched the scene, the corners of her mouth rising unconsciously.
She wheeled herself to the window. Through it, she could see the pitch-black night sky and the outline of the distant Forbidden Forest.
"Vera," Harry's voice suddenly came from behind her, carrying some hesitation, "you... really don't mind being sorted into Gryffindor?"
Vera turned around and saw Harry holding Nox, her green eyes shining with concern under the lamplight.
"You said the Black family has always been in Slytherin... You must value that a great deal."
Vera looked into Harry's green eyes, filled with concern, then gently wheeled herself over to her.
"The Sorting Hat gave me the right to choose," she said softly. "And I chose this place."
Harry blinked. "So... you chose Gryffindor yourself?"
"Yes." Vera nodded, her gaze falling on the lightning-shaped scar on Harry's forehead. "I wanted to try a different path."
Harry suddenly broke into a radiant smile and threw herself forward, hugging Vera tightly. "That's wonderful! I'm so happy you can be with us!"
Vera was caught off guard by the sudden hug, her hands hanging in midair as she had no idea where to put them.
Hermione cleared her throat from the side. "Harry, Vera might not be used to this..."
Only then did Harry realize her impropriety. She quickly let go, her cheeks flushing red. "Sorry, I got too excited!"
Vera gently smoothed the wrinkles in her robes. Her fingertips touched the wand hidden in her sleeve, and its cold feel calmed her slightly.
"It's already late," she said calmly. "We have class tomorrow. We should rest."
Nox lifted her head from the pillow and lazily meowed, as though mocking her owner's embarrassment.
Hermione nodded in immediate agreement. "That's right! We need to keep our energy up."
The three girls changed into their pajamas. As the lights went out, the dormitory sank into darkness, with only moonlight streaming through the windows.
Harry tossed and turned in bed before finally asking in a quiet voice, "Vera, are you asleep?"
"No." Vera's calm voice came from the darkness.
"I'm too excited to sleep." Harry's voice was brimming with undisguised delight. "So much happened today... I made friends, ate so much delicious food, and we're all in the same house!"
Hermione's voice came from the other bed. "Me too. My head is full of all the magic I saw today... those floating candles, moving staircases, and the talking hat!"
Listening to the two girls' excited voices, Vera felt that if she did not remind them soon, they would probably be late tomorrow morning.
"You should sleep," she cut directly through their fantasies. "If you really can't sleep, try thinking about some potion facts. You should fall asleep quickly."
"Potion facts?" Harry asked in confusion.
"For instance," Vera explained, "powdered root of asphodel combined with wormwood can make a very powerful sleeping potion; a bezoar is a stone taken from a goat's stomach; monkshood and wolfsbane are the same plant..."
Her voice was soft and rhythmic, like a lullaby.
Before long, Harry and Hermione's breathing gradually became even and deep.
Vera's lips curved upward. Although giving them the answers in advance might be considered cheating, she truly wanted to see Snape's reaction when faced with a girl who had Lily's eyes and Lily's talent for potions.
Moonlight quietly fell over the three girls. Thus, Hogwarts' first night passed peacefully... or did it?
Listening to their breathing, Vera slowly sat up. She glanced at the two sleeping soundly beside her, then closed her eyes and felt the Magic Circuit flowing through her body.
Golden patterns faintly emerged beneath her skin, while the crystal near her heart trembled slightly, clearly feeding back the magical fluctuations around her.
Ever since approaching Hogwarts, she had noticed that the ancient magic flowing throughout the castle seemed to be calling to her.
As far as she knew, Hogwarts itself had been built upon Ancient Magic.
In other words, the castle itself was a massive product of Ancient Magic.
Vera opened her eyes, a faint golden glow flowing through her pupils.
She quietly wheeled herself to the window. Outside, the shadows of the Forbidden Forest's trees swayed in the moonlight, and the surface of the distant Black Lake glimmered silver. Moonlight spilled like water across her silver-gray hair.
Vera could clearly sense a powerful source of magic coming from deep within the castle, producing a subtle resonance with the Magic Circuit inside her.
The Magic Circuit flowed slowly through her body. She could vaguely sense the pulse of the castle's ancient magic—the runes sleeping within the stone walls, the ghostly energy drifting through the corridors, even the source of energy surging deep underground...
All of it made her nerves especially excited.
Vera gently stroked the window frame, her fingertips touching the ancient stone bricks. A faint magical fluctuation traveled up through her fingers.
She closed her eyes and tried to sense those fluctuations through her Magic Circuit—
In an instant, her vision was filled with golden light. Countless ancient runes flickered across every stone brick of the castle, flowing like living things and weaving into a vast magical network that covered all of Hogwarts.
These runes were not distributed evenly. In some places, they were as dense as stars; in others, they were sparse and dim.
The strongest magical fluctuations came from eight directions—after carefully distinguishing them, she determined that they were the common rooms of the four houses, the headmaster's office, the Chamber of Secrets containing the basilisk underground, the room on the right side of the Third Floor Corridor where the Philosopher's Stone was kept, and...
Vera frowned. Deep beneath Hogwarts, she could actually sense an abnormally powerful source of magic silently radiating an ominous aura.
Another hidden chamber underground?
Just as she wanted to investigate further, a sharp pain suddenly pierced her temples.
Vera let out a muffled groan and had no choice but to stop sensing, taking several deep breaths.
It seemed that at her current Magic Circuit level, she still could not maintain such wide-range magical perception for long.
Hermione: Why Don't You Just Pretend I Don't Exist?
Just then, a rustling sound came from behind her.
Vera turned her head and saw Harry rubbing her eyes as she sat up in bed, her voice still drowsy. "Vera? I heard you... Are you okay?"
The instant she heard the sound, Vera quickly gathered herself and turned toward Harry. "I'm fine. I just couldn't sleep."
Harry yawned and walked barefoot to her side, her green eyes especially bright under the moonlight. "Did you have a nightmare? I sometimes do too... When I was at my aunt's house, I often woke up in the middle of the night."
Vera shook her head. "It wasn't a nightmare. I just need to get used to the new surroundings."
Harry nodded in understanding, took Vera's hand, and sat directly by the window. "Then let's look at the stars together for a while. You can see lots of stars from Gryffindor Tower."
Vera watched Harry's profile as she gazed up at the stars, moonlight tracing her small face with a silver edge.
Vera smiled silently, gathered herself, and raised a hand to point at the brightest star in the night sky. "That one is Venus. That orange star over there is Arcturus..."
Harry's eyes widened with curiosity. "You know so much. I can't tell any of the stars apart."
"Because most members of the Black family are named after stars," Vera explained softly. "My father was called Regulus, which means the heart of Leo. I also have an uncle..."
At the mention of Sirius, Vera's voice unconsciously lowered.
For now, it was better not to let Harry know too much.
Harry keenly sensed the change in her mood and gently tightened her hold on Vera's hand. "What about you? Vera, which star are you?"
Vera paused slightly and looked up at the sky. "My name comes from Vela, written that way in Latin."
As she spoke, she took Harry's hand and wrote her name in her palm.
Harry's palm curled slightly from the ticklish sensation, but she still watched attentively as Vera's finger traced its path across her skin.
"Vela..." she murmured, her green eyes filled with starlight. "Just as I thought, it's a really beautiful name!"
Vera stared blankly into her eyes, then instinctively pulled her hand back. The warmth of Harry's palm still lingered on her fingertips. "You should sleep. We have class tomorrow."
Harry reluctantly took one more look at the starry sky, then suddenly rose and hugged her. "Then... thank you for telling me about the stars."
The hug came and went quickly. By the time Vera came back to herself, Harry had already skipped back to bed, hugging her pillow and blinking at her. "Good night. Sweet dreams!"
Vera opened her mouth, but in the end, she merely gave a soft "Mm," wheeled herself back to her bed, and quietly lay down.
Early the next morning, Vera was awakened by Nox's tail brushing across her face.
