Nox sat primly by her pillow, amber eyes fixed on the window. Dawn had barely broken, and the morning light streamed through the glass, bathing the entire dormitory in a faint golden glow.
Vera quietly sat up and found that Harry and Hermione were still asleep—
Harry had kicked her blanket onto the floor and lay sprawled across the bed like a starfish, her glasses crooked to one side; Hermione, meanwhile, lay neatly on her back, murmuring in her sleep.
She smiled soundlessly, used a Levitation Charm to pick up the blanket and cover Harry again, then wheeled herself over to the window.
From this height, she could see the Black Lake shimmering in the morning light. The distant Forbidden Forest was shrouded in thin mist, looking mysterious and deep.
"Meow." Nox lightly jumped onto her shoulder and rubbed his head against her cheek.
"I know," Vera replied softly. "It's the first day of classes. We can't be late."
After leisurely changing into her school robes, she washed up and got herself ready.
As Vera was brushing her hair, a faint sound came from behind her—Hermione suddenly sat bolt upright in bed, her brown curls exploding like a fluffy ball of cotton candy.
"What time is it?" she asked in panic, fumbling around for her alarm clock.
"Seven ten," Vera answered. "There's still plenty of time to get ready."
Hermione sighed in relief, then stared at the already fully dressed Vera in surprise. "You're ready already?"
Vera nodded. "I'm used to getting up early."
In truth, she had specifically asked Nox to wake her earlier. Otherwise, it would be inconvenient if they all had to rush to wash up and get ready at the same time.
Hermione immediately leaped out of bed, rummaging through her textbooks as she muttered, "Transfiguration, Herbology... Oh no! I wonder if I'll make it in time!"
Her commotion woke Harry. The Savior sat up groggily, her glasses crooked on her nose. "What happened?"
"It's the first day of school." Vera wheeled over to her bedside, reached out to pinch her cheek, and took off her crooked glasses. "If you don't get up now, you'll be late."
Hmm, that felt nice.
Harry instantly woke up and nearly rolled off the bed. "Did I oversleep?"
"No." Vera handed her glasses back. "But Hermione has already entered battle mode."
Harry rubbed her eyes and looked at Hermione—the latter was flipping through two books at once, muttering as she recited something under her breath.
"Is she... always like this?" Harry blinked and asked quietly.
Vera shrugged. "Looks like it."
The three girls quickly finished getting ready. When they entered the Great Hall, morning light was streaming through the tall stained-glass windows, and quite a few students were already seated at the four long tables.
Vera wheeled herself to an empty spot at the Gryffindor table, while Hermione eagerly picked up A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration and began reviewing.
"Hermione, you should at least eat something first," Vera reminded her softly, pouring her a glass of pumpkin juice.
Hermione snapped out of it and put down her book. "Oh, right. Thank you."
Harry was wolfing down her food beside them, like a little beast that had been starving for three days.
Vera glanced over. Harry's plate was piled high with bacon and fried eggs, but there were hardly any vegetables.
A little helpless, she gently pushed over a bowl of fruit and vegetable salad. "Balanced diet."
Harry smiled awkwardly and obediently stuffed some tomato and lettuce into her mouth. After hurriedly swallowing, she explained in a small voice, "At home... hic! Dudley always took all the good parts."
Like most of the flesh from the fruit, or the parts of a steak that hadn't been burned black.
Vera's gaze darkened. Looking at Harry's thin wrists, she gently pushed a glass of orange juice in front of her. "No one here will steal your food. Eat slowly."
Harry nodded, but she did not forget to urge Vera in return. "Vera, you should eat too!"
As she spoke, she speared a piece of fried egg with her fork and held it out to Vera, her green eyes full of anticipation. "Want to try this?"
Vera froze for a moment. Looking at the fork so close to her, she hesitated briefly before leaning forward slightly and gently biting off the piece of fried egg.
"Mm, not bad," she commented softly. Then she turned away, chewed silently a few times, and slowly swallowed the food.
Petting Cats
After breakfast, the three of them set off for the Transfiguration classroom. However, the castle staircases constantly changed position, leaving the first-years completely disoriented.
"Have we been here before?" Harry stood at an intersection, looking around in confusion at the nearly identical corridors.
Hermione nervously checked the map. "We should turn left... no, right?"
Vera wheeled herself in front of a portrait. "Hello, could you tell us how to get to the Transfiguration classroom?"
The knight in the portrait had been dozing off. Hearing her, he opened one eye. "Ah! At last, a new student who knows to ask for directions! Go straight down this corridor, take the third staircase up, and it's the third door on the right!"
"Thank you." Vera nodded politely.
Hermione looked at her in surprise. "You actually thought to ask a portrait?"
"They've been here for hundreds of years," Vera said calmly. "Most of the time, they're more reliable than a map."
Following the portrait's directions, the three of them arrived at the Transfiguration classroom ahead of time.
There were only a few people scattered around the classroom. Professor McGonagall had not arrived yet, but a tabby cat sat primly on the lectern.
Vera narrowed her eyes slightly and secretly used her Magic Circuit to probe. On the seemingly ordinary tabby cat, she saw extraordinarily powerful magic—threads of magic formed a complex and precise magical network around the cat's outline.
She raised an eyebrow inwardly. So she could even see through an Animagus?
Although she had encountered Ron's Scabbers in the train compartment before, considering the other party's ill intentions, Vera had not rashly tested him without being certain.
Professor McGonagall was much stronger than Peter Pettigrew, but as her student, even if McGonagall noticed her secretly observing, Vera could at least be sure that she would not be in any danger.
Now, it seemed that she had seen McGonagall's magic clearly, yet the other party had shown no reaction whatsoever.
This meant that her Magic Circuit was even more concealed than she had imagined. Even a Transfiguration master like McGonagall could not detect it.
Thoughtfully, Vera wheeled herself to the front of the lectern, with Harry and Hermione following closely behind.
"What a cute kitty!" Harry curiously leaned closer to the lectern and reached out to pet the cat's head, but the tabby agilely jumped away, effortlessly dodging Harry's hand.
Catgirls were not meant to be touched whenever someone felt like it.
Watching the magic flowing through her body, Vera suddenly thought of something. Her lips curled up casually, and while the tabby was warily focused on Harry, she took the chance to reach out from the side and gently grab the tabby by the scruff!
The tabby clearly froze. Just as she was about to struggle free from Vera's clutches, a golden pattern flashed faintly across the skin of Vera's fingertips, hidden in the cat's blind spot.
In that instant, Vera clearly saw the magic on the tabby's body fall into momentary disorder.
The tabby's pupils suddenly shrank into thin slits, but in Vera's grasp, she still let out a weak "Mew."
It did not sound like an angry hiss. It sounded more like she was acting spoiled.
Having mischievously tested her theory on her own Head of House, Vera contentedly stroked the catgirl's head, listening as McGonagall was forced to let out a series of purrs that sounded both comfortable and awkward.
"That's amazing!" Harry's eyes widened in surprise. "Vera, it actually let you pet it!"
Vera smiled as though she knew nothing. "Maybe I just got lucky."
As expected, she had been right. With her Magic Circuit active, her touch caused some strange reaction in those who carried magic.
McGonagall's Animagus form had actually lost its ability to resist for a short time under the interference of Vera's Magic Circuit.
Of course, Vera herself probably could not use much magic right now.
The conditions for producing this effect were actually quite demanding. First, one had to Awaken a Magic Circuit and be able to see another person's Magic Circuit in order to possibly affect them.
Second, one had to make physical contact while the other person was completely off guard to create a brief effect.
Hmm... probably only a dozen seconds or so?
A moment later, the tabby finally broke free from Vera's hand and fled to the other end of the lectern. She glared at Vera warily, even the fur on her tail standing on end.
"It looks like it's angry," Hermione said quietly.
"Maybe it's just shy." Vera nonchalantly wheeled herself back to her seat, her expression perfectly calm. No one would have guessed that she had just done something bad to her own Head of House.
She lowered her head and looked at her fingers, estimating how long she had been in contact with catgirl McGonagall. She felt a little regretful.
At least for now, this sort of magical interference could only be used as a small joke in ordinary situations. As for using it against enemies... a proper wizard would not let someone get close that easily.
Just then, the classroom door was pushed open, and Ron and Neville rushed in, panting, nearly knocking over a table.
"We almost got lost!" Ron wiped away his sweat. "Those staircases are a nightmare!"
Neville nodded with a red face. "We walked around three times before we found this place."
The tabby suddenly leaped down from the lectern. Her body stretched in midair, and in the blink of an eye, she transformed into Professor McGonagall.
The classroom instantly fell silent. Every student stared wide-eyed, while the late Ron and Neville instinctively took a step back.
"Transfiguration is the most complex and dangerous magic you will study at Hogwarts."
Professor McGonagall's voice was as stern as ever, but her gaze paused slightly when it swept over Vera. "Also, touching an unknown magical creature without permission is an extremely unwise thing to do, Miss Black."
Vera calmly met her gaze. "Sorry, Professor. I was simply... drawn to the cat's beautiful fur."
McGonagall's lips pressed into a thin line. She seemed to want to say something, but in the end, she merely turned to Ron and Neville, who were still standing there blankly. "Gentlemen, are you not going to take your seats?"
Ron and Neville snapped out of it and hurriedly found seats.
With a wave of McGonagall's wand, the chalk on the blackboard automatically wrote out the day's lesson: turn a match into a needle.
"Today, we will learn how to turn a match into a needle." She looked around the classroom and flicked her wand, sending a match to everyone. "Remember, Transfiguration requires clear imagination and precise magical control. Your pronunciation must also be correct, and your wand movement must be decisive—like this."
She demonstrated a standard wand movement, and the match instantly turned into a gleaming silver needle.
"Now, begin practicing."
The classroom immediately filled with overlapping incantations and the sounds of wands being waved.
Vera picked up her wand. Through her Magic Circuit, she had seen the threads of magic flow during McGonagall's demonstration, winding around the match like living creatures and gradually altering its internal structure.
Her wand lightly tapped the match, and she clearly guided her magic to flow along the path she had just observed—
The match trembled slightly beneath her wand tip. A layer of silver light spread across its surface as it gradually lengthened and thinned, finally transforming into a perfect silver needle with a point sharp enough to pierce skin.
"Perfect!" McGonagall's voice came from right in front of her. She picked up Vera's silver needle and displayed it to the whole class. "Miss Black succeeded on her first attempt. Five points to Gryffindor!"
Author's Note: There will be a huge update tomorrow—ten chapters, probably around the early hours of the seventh. Please show your support, and tips, monthly tickets, or recommendation votes would be even better. Thank you, everyone!
Transfiguration Club
Winning five points in less than five minutes of the first class made all the other first-year students present look at her with envy.
Harry looked enviously at Vera's needle. "How did you do it? My match hasn't moved at all."
"Imagination is the key," Vera explained softly. "Don't just wave your wand. Specifically imagine the needle's shape, shine, weight... Imagine your magic passing through the wand and changing the match through the incantation."
She picked up Harry's match and placed it on the desk. "Come on, try again. This time, close your eyes and imagine the shape of a needle."
Harry nodded thoughtfully, stared at her match again, and moved her lips as she murmured the spell.
Vera noticed a faint glimmer at the tip of her wand, but the match only trembled slightly before falling still again.
On Vera's other side, Hermione was also constantly trying to replicate Professor McGonagall's movements. Her match was gradually taking on a silvery glow, but it was still some distance from becoming a needle.
From this alone, if they were talking purely about learning, Hermione's magical talent was practically unmatched among children her age.
Among this year's students, only Harry was a little stronger than her in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Quidditch.
After watching her try several times, Vera softly asked from beside her, "Do you need help?"
Hermione looked up. Stubborn determination shone in her brown eyes, and her little face had turned red from concentration. "Thank you, but I want to try a little longer by myself—Transfiguration changes an object's essential properties, not just its appearance, right?"
Vera was a little surprised by the depth of her understanding and nodded. "That's right. Changing the essence is the key."
A determined glint flashed in Hermione's eyes as she raised her wand again. "Then I need to imagine the changes to its internal structure more precisely..."
Watching her focused profile, Vera suddenly understood why Hermione had been able to master magic far beyond her peers in her first year in the original story. That kind of serious, studious spirit was indeed rare in Gryffindor.
McGonagall walked back and forth around the classroom, occasionally correcting the students' movements and pronunciation.
When she passed Harry, one end of Harry's match suddenly became sharp. Though the rest was still wooden, it had indeed begun to resemble a needle.
"You're making progress, Miss Potter," McGonagall said approvingly. "Keep trying."
Harry's face flushed with excitement. She turned to Vera, her green eyes full of joy. "I almost did it!"
Vera gently patted the back of her hand. "Try once more. You'll get the hang of it soon."
As soon as she finished speaking, Ron's match suddenly emitted a wisp of black smoke, startling him so badly that he nearly fell from his chair.
Neville's situation was even worse. After a soft pop, his match began smoking outright.
Professor McGonagall quickly waved her wand and extinguished the small flame on Neville's desk. "Don't be discouraged, Mr. Longbottom. Transfiguration requires patience and practice. Please continue."
Neville's face turned bright red as he clumsily accepted a new match and muttered an apology.
