"You finally came!" Harry panted as she ran up to Vera, her little face flushed from running. "I started waiting half an hour early. I almost thought you weren't coming!"
Vera raised an eyebrow slightly. "We never agreed to ride together."
"But I said I'd see you at school!" Harry said righteously, hurriedly pushing her slipping glasses back into place. "And we're friends, aren't we?"
Before Vera could respond, Harry had already started pushing her wheelchair on her own. "I'll push you in! The platform's too crowded. I just saw some older students nearly run into people. It's really dangerous!"
The instant she felt the push, Vera instinctively gripped the armrests, but she quickly sensed the difference between Harry and Kreacher.
The girl behind her was a little unpracticed, but surprisingly steady. She did not give Vera that uncomfortable feeling.
"Where's your luggage?" Harry asked as she pushed Vera through the crowd, looking around curiously.
"In the wheelchair's expanded storage space," Vera answered briefly.
Harry's green eyes immediately widened. "Wow! That's so cool!"
She bent down and leaned close to inspect the wheelchair's armrests, her nose nearly touching the metal parts. "That looks way more convenient than an ordinary trunk."
Vera subtly shifted to the side, putting a little distance between them. "Just a little trick."
"It's not just a little trick!" Harry straightened up and continued pushing her forward. "I bet you're the only person on the whole platform who thought of that!"
Vera tilted her head up slightly and looked at Harry's shining eyes, momentarily distracted.
This girl seemed filled with wonder and enthusiasm for everything in the magical world, like a dry sponge greedily soaking up every drop of water.
From the perspective of the story, that was a good thing. Curiosity made someone better suited for adventure.
Before long, the two found an empty compartment.
Harry struggled to shove her luggage into the compartment, then turned back. When she looked at Vera, she hesitated for a moment before asking quietly with a blush, "Do you need me to carry you up?"
Vera shook her head and pulled her wand from the wheelchair armrest. "I can do it myself."
She softly cast the Levitation Charm, and her body rose lightly into the compartment on a cushion of magic before landing steadily on a seat.
Nox nimbly jumped onto the seat and turned to give Harry a cry.
Harry's eyes grew even wider. She hurriedly sat beside Vera. "That's amazing! You can already use magic before you've even started classes?"
Vera tucked her wand back into her sleeve. "It's only a basic spell."
"That's still incredible!" Harry said excitedly. "You don't know—when I was at my aunt's house, I couldn't even mention the word 'magic.'"
Her voice suddenly lowered, and her fingers unconsciously rubbed the tape on her old glasses frame. "They always said I was a freak... that my parents died in a drunk-driving accident..."
Vera's gaze fell on Harry's thin, fragile wrist, the result of long-term malnutrition.
For the first time, she began seriously considering what kind of childhood this world's Savior had lived through.
"Now you know," Vera said softly. "They were heroes."
Harry looked up, clear light shining in her green eyes. She clasped Vera's hand in return and nodded firmly. "Mm! Thank you, Vera!"
Vera froze for a moment and discreetly tried to pull her hand free.
But she could not.
The Savior was... surprisingly strong.
Watching the crowd on the platform grow sparser and sparser, Vera silently thought.
A New Golden Trio
To the whistle of the Hogwarts Express, the train slowly started moving, and the scenery beyond the window began to drift by.
Harry finally released Vera's hand and eagerly threw herself toward the window, her nose almost pressed against the glass.
"Look! London is moving backward!" she cheered like a child riding a train for the first time.
Vera watched Harry's back, the corners of her mouth lifting unconsciously.
Nox yawned on her lap and stretched lazily.
Just then, the compartment door was gently pushed open. A girl with curly brown hair stood in the doorway, her lively eyes sweeping over the compartment. "Hello, is there still room here? All the other compartments are full."
Vera looked up at the girl by the door—thick brown curls, bright brown eyes, and those distinctive, slightly cute front teeth.
Hermione Granger, one of the Golden Trio from the original story, was standing in the doorway with several books in her arms.
"Is it okay?" Harry immediately looked to Vera.
After receiving Vera's silent nod, she promptly stood up and enthusiastically began helping Hermione bring her things inside.
A flicker of surprise passed through Hermione's eyes when she saw Vera's wheelchair, but she quickly resumed her polite smile. "Thank you! I'm Hermione Granger."
"Harry Potter." Harry held out her hand, then pointed to Vera beside her. "This is Vera Black."
"Is it really you?" Hermione's eyes widened at once. "I know all about you! You're mentioned in A History of Modern Magic, The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts, and Important Magical Events of the Twentieth Century."
Harry awkwardly adjusted her glasses, her cheeks reddening slightly. "Er... really? I don't actually know much about that yet..."
Hermione immediately launched into an endless account of all sorts of legends about Harry. Vera sat quietly to one side, discreetly observing this future top student.
Just as she had expected, Hermione's thirst for knowledge was as strong as the original story described, and her attitude was fairly friendly too.
"Oh, right!" Hermione turned curiously toward Vera. "You're a Black? From the Black family? The Pure-Blood Directory mentioned your family."
Vera looked at her with interest. "You even read books like that? Impressive."
Hermione's face reddened slightly. "After I received my acceptance letter, I read every magic book I could find. The Pure-Blood Directory is a little... outdated, but it does record a lot of useful historical information."
Nox suddenly jumped from Vera's lap onto the table and curiously sniffed the books Hermione had brought.
Hermione's eyes widened in delight. "Is that your cat? It's beautiful!"
"Her name is Nox." Vera gently stroked her head. "She has some Kneazle blood."
"A Kneazle!" Hermione excitedly pulled out a copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and quickly flipped to a page. "It says they can identify suspicious people. They're very intelligent magical creatures!"
"Really? Let me see!" Harry hurriedly leaned over to look at the book, and the two girls' heads nearly bumped together.
Vera watched the scene with interest—apparently, even in this world, certain bonds were destined.
Just then, the compartment door was pushed open again.
"I heard the Savior is in this compartment—" Draco Malfoy's arrogant voice abruptly stopped. His expression clearly showed surprise when he saw Vera. "Vera? Why are you here?"
His gaze swept over Harry and Hermione, and his mouth twisted. "And with these... people?"
Harry immediately straightened her back, her green eyes warily fixed on Draco. "You again."
Hermione looked between both sides in confusion. "You know each other?"
"Yes," Vera answered calmly, lightly stroking Nox's fur. "What is it, Draco?"
Draco's expression stiffened slightly. Behind him, his two lackeys, Crabbe and Goyle, blocked the doorway like two small mountains.
"My father told me to... say hello," he said reluctantly, his gaze lingering on Harry for a moment. "But it looks like you've already found company."
Harry frowned. "Vera doesn't need you telling her what to do."
Draco's face darkened. "Potter, you'd better figure out who you're talking to!"
"Cousin Draco," Vera interrupted softly, calmly watching him. "It's the first day of school. Do you really want to make things unpleasant?"
Draco opened his mouth as if he wanted to retort, but under Vera's gaze, he ultimately only gave a cold snort before turning and leaving with his two lackeys.
Silence fell over the compartment for a while.
Hermione looked Vera over curiously. "Cousin? You're related?"
"Distant relatives," Vera answered briefly, not wanting to dwell on the subject.
Harry sat back down angrily. "That Malfoy is awful! What gives him the right to talk like that?"
She suddenly remembered something and hurriedly leaned close to Vera, lowering her voice. "Is he holding a grudge because of what happened at Madam Malkin's last time? Do you want me to teach him a lesson?"
Seeing Harry's serious expression, Vera could not help laughing softly. "No need. I can handle it."
Hermione's eyes moved back and forth between them. Sensing that there was a story she did not know, she could not help asking, "You knew each other before?"
Harry immediately began excitedly recounting their meeting in Diagon Alley, making Hermione's eyes light up.
Just then, the compartment door was pushed open again.
A red-haired, freckled boy poked his head in. "Have you seen a toad? Neville's pet got away again—"
His eyes landed on Harry, and they suddenly widened. "Blimey! Harry! We met on the platform just now. I'm Ron Weasley!"
Harry gave him a friendly wave. "Of course I remember, Ron. We haven't seen a toad... Do you want to come in and look?"
Ron's gaze swept through the compartment. He clearly froze when he saw Vera, especially after noticing her wheelchair, and his expression became a little awkward.
"Er... thanks." He scratched his head and cautiously stepped into the compartment. "Hope I'm not disturbing you."
Hermione immediately displayed her usual warmheartedness. "We can help you look! Where do toads usually hide?"
Ron shrugged. "Who knows? Neville's toad is always running off everywhere."
Nox suddenly jumped down from Vera's lap and gracefully padded over to Ron's feet, sniffing his trouser leg.
"Whoa!" Ron took a surprised step back. "Is that your cat? She's... really pretty."
"Her name is Nox," Vera said softly. "She has Kneazle blood. Maybe she can help find the toad."
As though she understood, Nox's ears twitched, and she turned to slip beneath the seats.
A few seconds later, a frightened croak sounded from inside the compartment.
You Really Spoil Her
With the cat team's help, the toad gave a loud croak.
"Found it!" Harry cried delightedly, kneeling to look under the seat. "It really is in there!"
Ron hurriedly bent down too, clumsily grabbing the struggling toad. "Trevor! Don't run!"
After a burst of chaos, Ron finally stood up, his clothes covered in dust.
"Thank you!" He carefully held the toad in his hands. "Neville will be really happy."
Hermione smiled as she gave Nox the credit. "It was Nox's doing!"
Ron looked at Nox with a hint of envy in his eyes. "She's amazing... way better than my Scabbers."
As he spoke, he pulled a sickly-looking old rat from his pocket. "Look, all he does all day is sleep."
Nox's ears suddenly pricked up. Her amber eyes locked onto the rat, her tail rising dangerously as her body arched slightly, looking every bit like a hunter that had spotted prey.
Vera sharply noticed the change and called softly, "Nox, come here."
Only then did Nox reluctantly return to her side, though her eyes remained fixed on the rat in Ron's hand.
Ron did not seem to notice this detail and continued rambling about Scabbers's "glorious history." "...He's been with our family for eleven years. He was originally my brother Percy's pet, and then he was given to me..."
Hermione's eyes widened in surprise. "Eleven years? Ordinary rats don't live nearly that long!"
Ron shrugged. "Mum says he might have eaten some magical food."
Vera glanced at the rat and gently stroked Nox's fur until she gradually calmed down.
Before long, a round-faced boy timidly poked his head in. "Ron? Did you find Trevor?"
"Right here, Neville!" Ron raised the toad in his hand. "Thanks to this clever cat."
Relief immediately blossomed across Neville's face. "Thank you so much! I've searched through six compartments already..."
His gaze swept over everyone in the compartment. He clearly froze when he saw Harry, then noticed Vera's wheelchair, making him even more nervous.
"Er... hello, I'm Neville Longbottom," he introduced himself quietly.
Hermione warmly greeted him and introduced both Vera and Harry as well.
Yet unexpectedly, Neville had been as excited as Ron upon hearing Harry Potter's name, but the moment he heard Vera's surname, his face suddenly turned pale.
"B-Black?" He instinctively took a step back, his lips trembling slightly. "My gran said... the one locked in Azkaban..."
His words abruptly caught in his throat, and his face turned even paler.
The atmosphere in the compartment instantly grew somewhat heavy.
Vera's eyelashes trembled slightly. She remembered that Neville's parents had been tortured into insanity by Bella using the Cruciatus Curse.
And with Sirius still locked away in prison, along with her bargain-bin father Regulus...
If Voldemort were still around, she would practically be a standard Death Eater trainee.
