Background

Draco is the son of Narcissa Malfoy and a blood relative of Vera Black through the Black family. When he learns that Vera is Narcissa’s niece, he quickly claims their cousin relationship and assumes that, as a pure-blood Black, she will join Slytherin 4.

Following his ableist remarks toward Vera in Diagon Alley, Narcissa brings him to Grimmauld Place and compels him to apologize. Vera accepts politely but recognizes that Narcissa’s intervention is primarily meant to preserve the Malfoys’ connection to the last Black heir 6.

His confidence depends heavily on reputation, allies, and an audience. He taunts Vera over her wheelchair and provokes Harry, but repeatedly retreats when Vera directly challenges him or exposes the consequences of his actions 14 16 17. Vera exploits this weakness by tying his conduct to Malfoy family honor, ensuring he cannot easily avoid a public wager or apology 17 24.

Relationships

• Narcissa Malfoy — His mother. She forces him to apologize to Vera in order to protect the Malfoys’ relationship with the Black family 6.

Diagon Alley confrontation

At Madam Malkin’s, Draco questions whether Vera can attend Hogwarts because she uses a wheelchair and predicts she will be mocked or fall on the castle stairs. Harry intervenes and calls his behavior rude, leaving Draco intimidated after recognizing her as the Savior 4.

Forced apology at Grimmauld Place

Narcissa visits Vera with Draco and demands that he apologize for his remarks. Draco complies unwillingly and remains resentful when Vera deliberately addresses him as “Cousin Draco” 6.

Hogwarts rivalry

Draco continues antagonizing Vera after discovering she was sorted into Gryffindor. When he insults her in the courtyard, Vera disarms him with Expelliarmus, beginning her Battle Resonance progression and establishing that his threats carry little weight against her 14.

During Flying class, he steals Neville Longbottom’s Remembrall and uses Vera’s disability to provoke Harry into pursuing him. He later tries to threaten Vera after Harry is taken to Professor McGonagall, but retreats when Vera proposes settling matters privately 16.

Midnight duel and humiliation

Draco challenges Harry to a midnight duel in the Trophy Room, likely intending to have her caught breaking curfew. Vera forces him to wager a public apology if he loses or fails to appear, making his family’s reputation the price of retreat 17.

At the Trophy Room, Vera immediately disarms Draco and petrifies Crabbe and Goyle. She repeatedly defeats Draco with Expelliarmus, Wingardium Leviosa, and Descendo while Harry prevents his insults from going unanswered 19. When Draco tries to enforce formal dueling rules so that Harry must fight him directly, Vera and Harry use the delay to escape under an Invisibility Cloak; Peeves then helps Filch catch Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle out after curfew 20.

The following evening, Vera publicly demands the promised apology in the Great Hall. Under pressure from the watching students, Draco apologizes for his words and actions and promises not to insult Vera and Harry again, though he leaves furious and humiliated 24.

Aftermath

After the Trophy Room incident, Draco is visibly exhausted, fearful, and unable to conceal his hostility toward Vera. He and his companions stop openly challenging her when Gryffindor students return their stares 23.
