Demons had once been a nightmare for the other species of this world. Savage and bloodthirsty by nature, they possessed powerful dark abilities. Humans could not fight such creatures unless they were trained and had formidable combat experience.
They worshipped an evil goddess from the depths below, offering their lives to the Dark Goddess in exchange for the power to command darkness. This covenant had been forged when the ancestors of demons first came into being.
Their dark bloodlines continued unbroken, and after tens of thousands of years, their tracks began to cover every layer of the Abyss.
In the Main World, demons had invaded the surface more than a dozen times, with hundreds or even thousands of years between each invasion. Every appearance brought boundless terror and destruction to the world above. The people of that world called these disasters demon calamities.
In the Material Plane, humans of extraordinary strength continually fought them. Thus, every invasion of the world above had ultimately ended in defeat, and demons had remained inhabitants of the filthy planes known as the Abyss.
The demons living in the Abyssal World also maintained a strict hierarchy.
Their Abyssal World contained Demon Duchies of all sizes. Within each duchy were Demon Nobles of varying ranks, each commanding a host of demons of differing strength.
These demons lived in different parts of the Abyssal World, and their strength and rank determined how comfortably they lived there.
