Background

Yu Tu was the Blue River System’s First Commander, a feared and highly accomplished military figure personally promoted by His Majesty Blue River. He became First Commander at nineteen and rapidly suppressed rebellions across the unstable empire, earning an overwhelming reputation for ruthlessness and military deterrence 131 143. Despite this reputation for loyalty, he was arrested on charges of first-degree treason: allegedly organizing a palace coup with wandering refugees. He was transferred to First Prison on Calamity Planet under extreme military guard, as even his escorts were terrified of him 1 3 17.

Yu Tu was originally the young patriarch of the impoverished Yu Clan on White Vine Star. Born with miraculous White Vines that healed people and revived barren land, he was named after Shentu, a legendary deity. His clan was massacred when he was a child, and Lan Su brought him to the Blue River palace under the pretense of rescue. Yu Tu was instead imprisoned and subjected to years of experimentation intended to exploit his healing abilities and restore damaged Origin Essences 157.

The experiments mutated Yu Tu’s healing White Vine into the bloodthirsty Violet Slaughter Vine. Elisa later had Lan Xiao’s damaged Diamond-Grade Energy Crystal embedded in Yu Tu’s neck, using Yu Tu as a living container to repair it. The crystal enabled Lan Xiao’s control over Yu Tu while continuously draining his vitality 152 157.

Before his imprisonment, Yu Tu and Lu Mi were lovers and bore reciprocal Partner Marks. When Lan Xiao ordered Yu Tu to kill Lu Xiaojiu, Yu Tu instead staged Lu Xiaojiu’s death: he pierced Lu Xiaojiu’s abdomen, secretly repaired his damaged Black Panther Origin Essence, concealed the Partner Mark, and arranged his escape. The effort turned Yu Tu’s hair white and nearly killed him 140. Yu Tu later accepted five years of Memory Overwrite in exchange for being sent to Calamity Planet after Yan Mei told him that Lu Mi’s Partner Mark was there 67.

Yu Tu initially retained only his identity and roughly two months of recent memories, remembering neither the alleged coup nor his history with Lu Mi. The death of memory-key Tian Chi gradually restored the overwritten memories, and Lan Xiao’s death ultimately removed the final “blizzard” in Yu Tu’s mind, returning nineteen years of sealed memories and making him whole 12 66 156.

Yu Tu’s Diamond-Grade Energy Crystal was surgically removed from the back of his neck before his transfer to Calamity Planet. Although the crystal was believed to be his own, it was later revealed to have belonged to Lan Xiao; Yu Tu himself is an ancient mutated vine born without an Energy Crystal 14 120 152. He was also repeatedly drugged with lethal quantities of Desire Compound and subjected to reproductive experiments before his arrest, but resisted by killing every woman sent to force him to produce special vines 27 67.

Appearance

Yu Tu is a tall, pale man whose cold, intimidating appearance initially reinforces his feared reputation.

  • Long white hair; his hair was formerly black before he exhausted himself protecting Lu Xiaojiu 1 15 140.
  • Ruby-red eyes, which develop visible white energy patterns when he uses his power 1 8.
  • His original, pre-trauma appearance includes long black hair and clear black eyes 157 186.
  • A pale, refined face that is frequently described as cold, bewitching, or otherworldly beautiful.
  • A small white Energy Vine, often called Bean Sprout, can emerge from the top of his head 6 23.
  • The surgical site where the implanted Energy Crystal was removed is a stitched wound at the nape of his neck 14 120.
  • His body is covered in extensive stitch-like scars from repeated injuries, experimentation, and self-regeneration 95.
  • In his aberrant state, his eyes become completely white and his hair grows to his ankles 40.
  • Following later mutation, new energy patterns appear across his eyes and forehead 89.
  • His tears became permanently blood-red as a consequence of childhood experimentation and mutation 157.

Personality

Yu Tu initially presents himself as an expressionless, merciless commander. After awakening in prison with missing memories, however, he admits that his cold demeanor was partly an act to conceal how frightened and helpless he felt in confinement 23.

In private, his memory-damaged “Baby Yu Tu” persona is emotionally direct, socially naïve, clingy, and easily confused by sarcasm or double meanings. His attachment to Lu Mi persists independently of his damaged memories; he consistently seeks Lu Mi’s approval, comfort, and presence 16 22 35. After his adult memories return, Yu Tu becomes markedly colder, more composed, and more politically calculating, though he remains easily embarrassed and softened by Lu Mi 65 67.

His gentleness is paired with dangerous possessiveness and extreme violence when threatened or provoked. He attacks those who harm Lu Mi, refuses coercion, and brutally kills Ai Mu after the prisoner attempts to assault him 19 32. He is capable of ruling through fear and treating enemies as disposable tools, but he also protects civilians, spares useful opponents, and repeatedly seeks to create homes for refugees and children 76 109 135.

Yu Tu carries severe trauma from the Yu Clan massacre, imperial experimentation, forced killings, and repeated memory overwrites. He tends to conceal pain rather than burden Lu Mi, but his recovered memories leave him with enduring resentment toward Lan Su and Lan Xiao 95 157 181.

Abilities & Skills

Diamond-Grade Vine Energy

Yu Tu is publicly known as an unprecedented Diamond-Grade plant-type Energy Master. Plant-type energy is normally considered weak within the established hierarchy, making his Diamond-Grade Vine an exceptional anomaly 2 6.

Yu Tu is in fact an ancient mutated vine born without an Energy Crystal. His White Vine is his original healing power, while the Violet Slaughter Vine emerged through mutation, experimentation, hatred, and bloodshed 152 157.

  • Can manifest white vines despite wearing five Energy Lock Rings 6 32.
  • His former combat weapon, the Violet Slaughter Vine, was considered among the most lethal source-energy weapons 10.
  • Uses vines to bind, choke, disarm, cage, and overpower opponents 15 32 76.
  • His power remains functional despite the removal of the implanted Energy Crystal, contradicting ordinary energy-system rules 14 17 152.
  • Lu Mi initially orders him to conceal the ability because its exposure could lead to further experimentation 17 29.
  • Can manifest numerous Violet Slaughter Vines at once; during the rebellion, he deploys ten vines to rapidly defeat Tian Chi and Imperial soldiers 52.
  • His Violet Slaughter Vine becomes substantially stronger when fed by blood, including his own blood 152 183.
  • Can cover and fortify an entire planet with defensive vines, as he does when transforming a barren refuge into Black Cat Planet 91.

Regenerative Vines

Yu Tu can generate fine white vines from his injuries to rapidly repair damaged tissue.

  • Heals severe facial wounds and puncture wounds at extraordinary speed 8 10.
  • Can restore injuries even after removing stitches and bandages himself 8.
  • Uses vines to examine and treat Lu Mi’s wounds 24.
  • In his aberrant state, he manifests a massive white ancient vine to heal Lu Mi’s fatal chest wound 41.
  • Major healing exertion can leave him dormant and unconscious 41.
  • Can restore damaged Origin Essences by sacrificing his own vitality, as demonstrated when he repaired Lu Mi’s damaged Black Panther Origin 138 140.
  • Can revive vegetation, restore barren land, and heal other people on a massive scale 157 173.

Bean Sprout

Bean Sprout is a small manifestation of Yu Tu’s energy that externalizes emotions he struggles to show openly.

  • Spins, sways, or forms hearts when he is happy, shy, or affectionate 10 23.
  • Stiffens when he is angry and droops when he is weak or upset 23.
  • Can be pulled off and destroyed, but immediately regrows 23.
  • Yu Tu keeps its existence secret because he believes it undermines his intimidating image 23.
  • Can split into multiple sprouts when Yu Tu is especially overwhelmed, embarrassed, or emotionally excited 52 109.
  • Is widely recognized as an endearing feature despite Yu Tu’s fearsome public reputation 126.

Aberrant State

When the Partner Mark senses Lu Mi’s mortal danger, Yu Tu can enter an aberrant state that restores suppressed memories and releases immense origin power.

  • Regains memories of Lu Mi and their shared past 41.
  • Develops fully white eyes and dramatically lengthened hair 40.
  • Can summon ancient-scale vines powerful enough to heal life-threatening injuries 41.
  • The state places overwhelming strain on him and leads to a dormant period afterward 41.

Blood Mist Amplification

Yu Tu can exploit blood-rich or moisture-heavy environments to expand the Violet Slaughter Vine’s range and lethality.

  • Calamity Planet’s aridity weakens him, whereas water and humidity stabilize him 6 8.
  • On Siyue Planet, he mixes his own blood into the mutated mist, causing dense Violet Slaughter Vines to grow through the sky and capture an airborne Star Beast Horde 183.
  • The blood mist allows him to fight effectively against large flying targets that would otherwise be difficult to reach from the ground 183.

Intelligence and Adaptability

Yu Tu is an exceptionally fast learner despite his memory loss.

  • Masters unfamiliar prison assembly work after briefly reviewing its manual 32.
  • Quickly adapts to Cang Qi’s Energy Sprayer during the battle at Second Prison 48 49.
  • Uses deception and feigned compliance to exploit openings in his restraints 19.
  • Manipulates Imperial surveillance, coerces guards into covert loyalty, and secretly arranges Lu Xiaojiu’s immigration and safety on Polaris Star 135.
  • Demonstrates strategic military judgment as Commander-in-Chief of the Ninth Army, prioritizing resource preservation, civilian safety, and long-term political gains over indiscriminate war 107 109 142.

Limitations

  • Calamity Planet’s dry climate severely weakens and destabilizes him; water rapidly calms his agitation 6 8.
  • He is highly sensitive to cold and requires warmth and humid conditions 22 25.
  • Energy Lock Rings restrict his power, though they cannot fully suppress it 6 17.
  • His missing implanted Energy Crystal, memory damage, and Desire Compound exposure contribute to periods of instability 14 21 27.
  • Using his own origin to repair another person’s damaged Origin Essence can cost him enormous vitality and potentially his life 138 140.
  • The Desire Compound caused periods of instinct-driven behavior and extreme physical demands; its effects diminish over time but do not disappear immediately 21 67 177.
  • Lan Xiao’s implanted crystal and associated bell-based control system could compel Yu Tu to attack himself or Lu Mi, although the crystal’s removal severely weakened the control 52 147.
  • His trauma, sealed memories, and fear of causing Lu Mi pain cause him to hide injuries and emotional distress 95 156 157.

  • Ming Qiuxue — Second Prison’s warden and later Yu Tu’s ally in the Freedom Army. Initially distrustful of Yu Tu’s treason conviction, Ming eventually vows to help protect him and becomes one of his closest military and political partners 17 35 53 142.

  • Yun Yuan / Qi Yuan — Ninth Army deputy commander and Yu Tu’s fiercely loyal subordinate. Yu Tu saved her from the purge of Qi An’s descendants, after which she underwent a second awakening to become a Diamond-Rank Falcon. She is also an enthusiastic supporter of Yu Tu and Lu Mi’s relationship 103 104.
  • Yun Baihe — Yu Tu’s first close friend and medical ally. Yun Baihe developed medicine to relieve the pain caused by the implanted Energy Crystal, and Yu Tu deeply mourns his apparent death before later welcoming his return 131 141 185.
  • Yun Tiange — Yun Baihe’s younger brother and Yu Tu’s later business partner. Yu Tu restrains his hostility toward Tiange out of respect for Yun Baihe and helps investigate the possibility of Yun Baihe’s survival 141 178 181.
  • Ninth Army — Yu Tu’s personal army, which follows him first under the identity of Commander Bai Jiu and then openly recognizes him as Lord Yu Tu. The force’s name, pink cat-paw flag, and Black Cat Planet are all tied to Yu Tu’s longing for Lu Mi 94 103 109 104.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Imprisonment at First Prison

Yu Tu arrives on Calamity Planet as an allegedly traitorous former commander and is registered as Prisoner 0456. His first encounter with Lu Mi is treated by the prison population as a potential clash between two terrifying figures, but their past connection quickly becomes apparent 1 3 11.

Memory Loss and Investigation

Yu Tu insists that he does not remember organizing a coup, attacking Lu Mi, or committing treason. Tests suggest that his mind is nearly blank, while the removal of his Energy Crystal and his abnormal continuing power raise further suspicion around his imprisonment 12 14 17.

Lan Su’s research later indicates that Yu Tu was likely drugged and exploited as a breeding subject because of his unique Diamond-Grade Vine 27.

Prison Life and the Ai Mu Incident

Under Lu Mi’s protection, Yu Tu begins following First Prison’s routine while concealing his Vine power. His intimidating presence terrifies other prisoners even when he believes they are being friendly 29.

When Ai Mu attempts to assault him in Workroom Seven, Yu Tu retaliates with a screwdriver and white vines, killing him despite five Energy Lock Rings. The incident creates a pretext for his punishment and later emergency interrogation 32 33.

Second Prison Torture and Aberrant Awakening

Yu Tu is transferred to Second Prison during Lu Mi’s absence and tortured under Tian Chi’s orders. He refuses to use his vines or leave Calamity Planet, choosing to protect Lu Mi and remain near him instead 38 39.

After Lu Mi rescues him, Yu Tu senses Lu Mi’s life-threatening injury through their Partner Marks. His aberrant state awakens, restores his memories, and allows him to heal Lu Mi at the cost of entering dormancy 40 41.

Rebellion

Yu Tu becomes part of First Prison’s rebellion against the Blue River authorities. Although weakened after losing his Energy Crystal, he operates Cang Qi’s Energy Sprayer and publicly rejects Tian Chi’s claim over him 48 49.

He subsequently resumes use of the Violet Slaughter Vine, defeats Tian Chi, and resists the bell-based conditioning Lan Xiao used to treat him as an obedient weapon 52.

Escape and Black Cat Planet

After Calamity Planet’s destruction, Yu Tu survives separately from Lu Mi and establishes a hidden refuge on barren Planet Z9560. He protects its refugees with a planetary network of vines, renames it Black Cat Planet, and vows to find his lost “little black cat” again 89 91.

For three years, Yu Tu operates under the masked identity of Commander Bai Jiu while building the Ninth Army and Black Cat Planet into a major independent power 94 103 104.

Reunion and the Ninth Army

Lu Mi recognizes Commander Bai Jiu as Yu Tu through the Ninth Army’s pink cat-paw flag. Their reunion ends the three-year separation, and Yu Tu eventually reveals his identity to the Ninth Army. Rather than rejecting him, the army kneels and recognizes him as Lord Yu Tu 94 109.

As Commander-in-Chief, Yu Tu expands the Ninth Army, allies with the Freedom Army, governs Black Cat Planet, and seeks to secure homes rather than merely conquer territory 104 109 123.

War Against the Blue River Empire

Yu Tu helps form an alliance of independent powers aimed at placing Lan Su on the throne and removing Lan Xiao without needlessly devastating the Blue River System. Although his diplomacy is coercive and backed by overwhelming military force, he repeatedly advocates political pressure and civilian protection over unrestricted warfare 142.

During the final campaign against Blue Star, Yu Tu serves as a Star Lord and strategist while Lu Mi, Yun Yuan, and Ming Qiuxue lead the assault. The fall of the empire eventually leads to Lan Xiao’s trial and death 145 156.

Complete Memories and White Vine Star

Lan Xiao’s death unlocks the final nineteen years of Yu Tu’s sealed memories. Yu Tu remembers his childhood as the Yu Clan’s young patriarch, Lan Su’s betrayal, Elisa and Lan Xiao’s experiments, and the origins of both his White Vine and Violet Slaughter Vine 156 157.

Yu Tu later restores sunlight to White Vine Star, builds a monument listing every murdered Yu Clan member, and sends Lan Su the registry as evidence that he will never forgive the massacre. He also begins rebuilding White Vine Star as a home and business center 181.

Siyue Planet Investigation

When Yun Tiange receives an encrypted communication associated with Yun Baihe, Yu Tu leads an expedition to the mutated Siyue Planet. Protected by Black Shadow and Golden Eye, he destroys a Star Beast Horde with blood-amplified Violet Slaughter Vines and forces the planet’s creatures to guide him to Zhou Lü 182 183.

The investigation ultimately reunites Yu Tu with the returned Yun Baihe, allowing Yu Tu to welcome his oldest friend back and support Yun Tiange’s reunion with his brother 185 186.
