Background / History

Ling Yunzi brought Yue Lian into the Nine-Clear Haoran Sect, arranging the disciple-acceptance ceremony at which Yue first met Chu Zeming. Although he was Chu’s master in name, he rarely instructed him; Chu’s outstanding cultivation was not the result of Ling Yunzi’s guidance. 1 4

He quickly became intensely protective of Yue Lian. After Chu drew his sword at Yue in the bamboo grove, Ling Yunzi refused to hear Chu’s explanation, accused him of jealousy and an unstable Dao heart, and warned him never to target Yue again. 4 He continued to grant Yue exceptional privileges, including servants, permission to join dangerous expeditions despite low apparent cultivation, and orders that Chu keep him close. 7 10

Ling Yunzi later disclosed that divination had predicted Yue Lian would become extraordinarily influential and lead the sect toward prosperity. His favoritism may also have been motivated by an attempt to ingratiate himself with the powerful Black Lotus connected to Yue’s hidden origins. 15 16

Appearance

Ling Yunzi is a handsome man usually dressed in white, cloud-patterned Daoist robes. His appearance is repeatedly compared to that of an ethereal or exiled immortal. 4 10

Personality

Ling Yunzi presents himself as calm, righteous, and detached, but his decisions are heavily shaped by pride, favoritism, and concern for status. He readily invokes cultivation ethics, sect rules, and discipline against Chu Zeming while overlooking Yue Lian’s conduct and needs. 4 15 42

He is deeply invested in divination and his belief that Yue Lian is the sect’s destined source of fortune. Rather than reconsider this conclusion after repeated setbacks, he interprets ambiguous omens to support his existing bias against Chu. 16 34 43

When publicly challenged or embarrassed, Ling Yunzi reacts vindictively. He attempts to force Chu to kneel before the Heavenly Remnant Sect, demotes him after being exposed, and later uses an impossible repair task to push him out of the sect. 33 42 By the time Chang Wei and Qin Elder leave, he admits regret but is unable to repair the damage caused by his leadership. 48

Story Role / Major Arcs

Favoritism toward Yue Lian

Ling Yunzi’s protection of Yue establishes an early source of conflict for Chu. He reprimands Chu over the bamboo-grove incident, assigns him responsibility for Yue during the Polar Sea expedition, and pressures him to surrender hard-won secret-realm rewards to Yue. 4 10 15

His favoritism becomes explicit before the Joint Grand Tournament, when he tells Qin Elder that divination predicts Yue will lead the sect to prosperity. 16

Conflict with Chu Zeming

After Chu wins the Joint Grand Tournament and reaches the Nascent Soul Realm, Ling Yunzi orders him to kneel and apologize to Lu Benxiong. Chu withstands Ling’s pressure, disproves the accusations, and condemns Ling’s neglect and unequal treatment before both sects. 32 33

Unable to accept the humiliation, Ling Yunzi demotes Chu to an outer-sect servant. He later assigns Chu the near-impossible task of retrieving arena stone from the Spirit Mirror Platform’s sixth level, intending to force him out of the sect. 33 42

When Chu returns alive with the stone, Ling Yunzi again orders him to leave. Chu instead declares that he is choosing to abandon the sect because Ling is selfish, sycophantic, narrow-minded, and unworthy of leadership. 43

Assault and Decline

After divining that a later-joining disciple possesses the sect’s great fortune, Ling Yunzi assumes Chu stole Yue’s destiny. Yue Lian then ambushes him with the Lifebound Brick, traps him in an artifact sack, beats him unconscious, and leaves him in a dung pit. 34

Ling Yunzi tries to conceal the humiliation and suspects Chu, but cannot prove his involvement. His authority continues to erode as disciples quietly protect Chu from unfair assignments and retain their respect for their former eldest senior brother. 34

Collapse of the Nine-Clear Haoran Sect

Chu’s departure triggers a mass exodus of twenty or thirty disciples. Xuan Mo refuses Ling Yunzi’s offer to become the new Eldest Senior Brother, and Yue Lian also leaves to follow Chu. 43

Ling Yunzi finally recognizes that he may have mistaken the identity of the sect’s child of destiny, but his realization comes too late. After Chang Wei departs and Qin Elder relinquishes his commitment to the sect, Ling is left confronting the fulfillment of Chu’s warning that the sect would be ruined by his own actions. 48
