Background
Subaru is a Japanese youth transported into Lugunica, where repeated deaths trigger Return by Death and reset the timeline. The resets leave him emotionally unstable, fearful of dying permanently, and burdened by memories no one else shares 133 134 135.
During a reset in the capital’s slums, Subaru encounters Morien, a suspicious self-described Warlock whose telepathy and insect-based body immediately unsettle him. Although Subaru considers asking Morien for help, he initially refuses to endanger an unfamiliar stranger with his own problems 134.
Subaru becomes caught in the conflict at Old Man Rom’s Loot House. He refuses to abandon Emilia and Rom when Elsa Granhiert overwhelms them, prompting Morien to offer him cursed Insect Eggs as the price of power. Subaru accepts without hesitation, though the Eggs do not provide immediate combat ability 136 137.
The parasite later hatches into Loop, who becomes Subaru’s internal companion and grants him access to powers shaped by their merged body and soul. With Loop’s assistance, Subaru adopts the identity of Natsumi Schwarz, a noblewoman persona Morien installs as a sixth Royal Selection candidate 138 167 168.
Appearance
When acting as Natsumi Schwarz, Subaru uses Loop’s bodily remodeling alongside makeup, tailoring, and acting skill to present as a refined noblewoman 168.
- Long black hair arranged to cover part of his face 168
- Dark eye shadow, curled lashes, softened facial features, and altered skin texture 168
- A fitted black dress, folding fan, elegant voice, and dignified posture 168
- Eyes resembling those of his mother, which remain the least altered part of his appearance 168
Personality
Subaru is excitable, dramatic, and prone to humor even under extreme pressure. His repeated deaths leave him volatile and frightened, especially around Elsa, whose presence evokes memories of being disemboweled in earlier loops 134 135.
Despite his fear and lack of conventional strength, Subaru is protective and impulsively self-sacrificing. He stands against Elsa to protect Emilia and Rom, attempts to defend Emilia from hostile villagers, and accepts dangerous power rather than abandon people in danger 136 167 173.
As Natsumi, Subaru displays genuine confidence in feminine presentation, tailoring, acting, and etiquette. The persona is not merely a disguise: it reflects an idealized version of himself that he has imagined and practiced before 168.
Abilities & Skills
Return by Death
Subaru’s death resets the timeline, allowing him to retain memories of prior loops while others do not 133 134.
- Repeated deaths have given him knowledge of events and people that have not yet occurred in the current timeline 134 135.
- Subaru fears the ability may have a finite number of uses, though no confirmed limit is established 135.
- Its existence is known to more beings than Subaru realizes, making reliance on it dangerous 170.
Loop and the Insect Eggs
Loop is a female centipede-like being born from Morien’s Insect Eggs after they merge with Subaru’s flesh, blood, and soul 138.
- Communicates telepathically with Subaru and can access his memories, including his cultural references 168 169.
- Can emerge through Subaru’s body; the opening heals almost immediately afterward 138.
- Can numb Subaru’s nerves and manipulate his senses 138 173.
- Can remodel his muscles, skin, facial features, vocal cords, organs, and other physical traits within limits 168 173.
- Describes Subaru’s body as her “nest,” treating their relationship as both parasitic and familial 169.
- Cannot yet remodel Subaru’s Gate without Morien strengthening her first 173.
Return by Undeath
Return by Undeath is Subaru’s limited-area time-reversal ability, developed through his connection with Loop 169 173.
- Can reverse the recent state of objects or injuries within a confined area 169.
- Subaru accidentally reverted Rom’s wound to a pre-healing state during his first uncontrolled use 138 169.
- Subaru can presently reverse only about one second in a small area when using it deliberately 173.
- He uses it for precise work, such as undoing carving mistakes while making a Sacred Seal 173.
Natsumi Persona
Subaru is highly skilled at constructing and performing the identity of Natsumi Schwarz 168.
- Uses clothing alteration, makeup, posture, etiquette, and acting to maintain the persona 168.
- Loop’s adjustments make the disguise more convincing than ordinary cosmetics alone 168.
- His elegant mannerisms successfully surprise Rem and confuse Beatrice and Puck at Mathers Mansion 169.
Faith and Incantation
Loop teaches Subaru that Morien’s descendants can use power through faith, Sacred Seals, and Incantation 169 173.
- Subaru carves a wooden Sacred Seal depicting Morien under Loop’s instruction 173.
- The strength of an Incantation depends on the quality of the believer’s faith and the Sacred Seal used to represent it 173.
- Subaru has begun preparing to use Incantation but has not yet demonstrated it successfully 170 173.
Equipment / Items
- Flip phone (“Meteor”) — A phone from Japan that Subaru attempts to sell to Old Man Rom; its photographs convince Rom that it is a rare magical device 136.
- Folding fan — Used as part of Natsumi’s noble-lady presentation 168 169.
- Natsumi’s black dress and tailoring tools — Clothing, fabric, needles, and thread supplied for Subaru’s Royal Selection identity 168.
- Wooden Sacred Seal — A hand-carved representation of Morien intended to support faith-based Incantation 173.
Relationships
- Morien — Benefactor, manipulator, and the creator of Loop. Morien saves Subaru from Elsa, grants him the Insect Eggs, forces him into the Natsumi identity, and secures his participation in the Royal Selection through promises concerning Subaru’s parents 136 167 168.
- Loop — Internal parasite, companion, and Morien’s daughter. Their relationship is marked by telepathic banter, physical dependence, and mutual cooperation in developing Subaru’s powers and Natsumi persona 138 168 173.
- Emilia — Subaru protects her during the Loot House attack and tries to defend her from anti-half-elf prejudice in Arlam Village. Natsumi’s candidacy places them in competing Royal Selection factions despite their alliance 136 167 173.
- Old Man Rom — Loot House owner whom Subaru tries to protect from Elsa. Subaru’s first uncontrolled use of Return by Undeath accidentally reopens Rom’s wound 136 138.
- Elsa Granhiert — A traumatic enemy from Subaru’s previous loops. Her presence triggers intense fear, but Subaru still refuses to flee when Emilia and Rom are threatened 134 135 136.
- Roswaal L. Mathers — Political ally who accepts Natsumi’s faction while recognizing Morien as dangerous and unpredictable 167 168 169.
- Ram and Rem — Mansion maids whose differing reactions to Subaru range from Ram’s sharp hostility to Rem’s guarded professionalism 166 168 169.
- Reinhard van Astrea — The Sword Saint who arrives after the Loot House battle. Subaru reacts to Reinhard’s strength and popularity with immediate jealousy and mockery 139.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Slum and Loot House Incident
Subaru’s repeated deaths bring him into contact with Morien, Elsa, Felt, Emilia, and Rom. Morien’s presence alters the expected chain of events, preventing Reinhard from arriving in time to save the Loot House group; Subaru’s willingness to protect Emilia and Rom leads directly to his acceptance of the Insect Eggs 134 136.
Birth of Loop
After the battle, Subaru discovers that the Eggs have hatched into Loop. He gradually reframes the centipede as a contracted familiar rather than a monster, even as her existence changes his body and grants him unfamiliar powers 138.
Natsumi Schwarz and the Royal Selection
Morien uses Emilia’s insignia to prove Subaru qualifies for the Royal Selection, publicly naming him Natsumi Schwartz. Subaru initially resists, but Morien’s promise to reunite him with his parents persuades him to accept the role 167.
With Loop’s help, Subaru transforms fully into Natsumi Schwarz and enters an alliance between Morien’s faction and Roswaal’s Emilia faction 168 169.
Arlam Village
Subaru begins practicing Return by Undeath and carving a Sacred Seal before accompanying Morien and Emilia to Arlam Village. There, he attempts to calm villagers blaming Emilia for a supernatural outbreak, but Morien’s ruthless response to their hostility ends any chance of peaceful mediation 173.
Notable Quotes
“Natsumi Schwarz has descended once more.” 168
“I won’t run!” 136

- Subaru describes himself as physically active, claiming a grip strength above seventy kilograms and an eighty-kilogram bench press 166.
