Background and History

Mephisto is an avatar of Er Dongsheng, whose true body is known as Baal. They initially present themselves to other demons as estranged brothers: their staged fight helps conceal Er Dongsheng’s origins and suggests a connection to a powerful Dark Beast 263 272. Diabolo later joins them as the Burning Legion’s third giant. Though the three occupy separate bodies and can act independently, they remain one person at their core 478 540 730.

Mephisto builds his reputation in Fire Prison through conquest. He destroys the Seven Demons Organization, later kills a Third-Level Demon, and founds Destruction Land. His expansion earns him the name King of Destruction, but also prompts rival factions to unite against him 422 423.

His search for power leads him into Purgatory’s core, where his energy is sealed and his connection to Er Dongsheng is briefly severed. There he witnesses a meeting between the Destruction God King and the Demon Master of Destruction, then absorbs a colossal heart linked to the Dark Beast. He subsequently pursues more of its hearts, gathering three and later presenting a complete heart that still requires living blood to awaken 388 389 390 668 730.

Appearance

Mephisto has an elegant, almost human-looking demonic form. His bearing is repeatedly described as noble, in contrast to the more visibly brutal forms of other demons 263 300.

Personality

Mephisto is usually calm, aloof, and deliberate. He recognizes Agatha’s attempt to provoke jealousy at the Ruins and plays along because the resulting fight offers a chance to test his strength 300. Diabolo’s more demonstrative temperament is described as almost his opposite 637.

His composure does not imply mercy. He tears out a heckler’s heart without warning, destroys the bodies and souls of Fran’s followers, and refuses to surrender the Time and Space Crystal even under a powerful binding attack 272 304 309. He also takes pride in the loyalty of his battered Destruction Troopers when they refuse to surrender 423.
