Ch. 161Lightning Release Nintaijutsu
Plot and key events
- After Sōji defeats the Fourth Raikage, he heals the Raikage’s chest wound with the Mystical Palm Technique. The Raikage accepts his loss and promises to send Kirigakure the secret scroll of Lightning Release Nintaijutsu within three days.
- The Raikage agrees that Kirigakure’s Jinchūriki may train in Kumogakure, though the training must take place there. To compensate, he places no limit on the number of people Kirigakure may bring.
- The two nations sign a mutual-assistance treaty covering trade, shipping access, liaison officers, intelligence-sharing, noninterference, and military nonaggression. A separate memorandum sets out the Jinchūriki training arrangement.
- At a farewell banquet, Yugito quietly broods over her defeat by Sōji, while Wolf Demon and Yugito share a drink and put their earlier conflict behind them. The Hidden Cloud delegation departs the next morning.
- Three days later, the promised scroll arrives. Sōji studies its detailed instructions on lightning chakra, Lightning Release Armor, and using lightning to amplify muscular power. He sees how well it would complement his fighting style, but recognizes that he lacks a lightning affinity and has too many other skills to develop. He concludes he will need a shortcut.
Character developments and interactions
- Sōji remains composed and pragmatic, accepting the Raikage’s conditions while thinking strategically about how to expand his abilities.
- The Fourth Raikage respects Sōji’s strength and keeps his word, though he insists on protecting Kumogakure’s control over Jinchūriki training. Their clasped hands mark a shift from combat to cooperation.
- Mei Terumi conducts the treaty negotiations carefully, especially clarifying that the Jinchūriki will return home and that no techniques will be transferred.
- Yugito is still processing her loss, while her quiet toast with Wolf Demon suggests both are ready to move beyond their past clash.
Significant themes
- Rivalry giving way to diplomacy: Sōji’s victory becomes the basis for a practical alliance rather than continued hostility.
- Trust with limits: The treaty establishes cooperation, but both sides protect their own interests and secrets.
- Growth and trade-offs: Lightning Release Nintaijutsu could greatly strengthen Sōji’s combat system, yet mastering it would compete with his many other training priorities.
