Background

Bill was the only captain in Palan Province willing to navigate upriver through the Borneo rainforest during the rainy season. Exploiting this monopoly, he initially offered to rent out his boat for $50,000, then demanded $100,000 to personally guide the expedition. Jack Byron accepted due to the Blood Orchid’s limited flowering period. 30

Before settling in the region, Bill served in the United States special forces. He told Meng Zu that he had come far from his former life in order to make a new start. 31

Unknown to the expedition, Bill and Jack had made a private arrangement to alter the route in exchange for an additional $50,000, allowing Jack to reach the orchids sooner. The altered route led toward the waterfall that destroyed Bill’s boat; after Jack’s death, Bill could not disclose the deal or collect the bonus. 37

Bill is commercially shrewd and opportunistic, pricing his services according to the exceptional danger of rainy-season river travel. He dismisses Gale’s objections to his fee because he knows the group has no practical alternative. 30

He supplies the team with shotguns, serves as navigator of the Bloody Mary, and approves Kerr’s satellite-calculated shortcut after comparing it with his own knowledge of the river. 31

Shipwreck and Jungle Crossing

When the boat’s engine liner breaks and the vessel is carried toward a waterfall, Bill is unable to regain control. After the wreck destroys the group’s supplies, he proposes crossing the jungle to Danaga Rock rather than waiting days for rescue. 33

Bill helps lead the survivors through the rainforest, fights Giant Pythons, and assists Meng Zu in protecting the group as they carry Gordon to safety. 33 36

Aftermath

Following the rescue, Gale pays Bill $100,000 for his work. Although he loses Jack’s secret bonus and his boat, he still profits from the expedition and develops a closer relationship with Sam. 37
