Background
Sam travelled to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, with Brian, Anna, and Amy during the holidays. After losing contact with their families for three days, the Fox family hired the Free Detective Agency to locate and return him for $50,000. Meng Zu accepted the case, which the Mercenary System designated as a 50-point mission 3.
Vampires abducted Sam and his friends and transferred them to Ravensfair, apparently as payment in the Soulstone trade. Meng Zu traced the traffickers, learned Sam had been taken to the cursed town, and searched Mary Shaw's abandoned theater before nightfall 4 5 7.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ravensfair abduction
Meng Zu found Sam unconscious in Mary Shaw's underground theater chamber alongside six other captives. After being awakened with a slap, Sam panicked and mistook Meng Zu for a vampire 8.
Sam refused to leave Brian, Anna, and Amy behind despite Meng Zu's original contract covering only him. Meng Zu ultimately agreed to escort them after each friend formally hired him. Sam also insisted that the newly awakened Jamie, Lisa, and Ella not be abandoned, despite Meng Zu's suspicions 9.
During the escape, Sam followed Meng Zu's instructions to stay quiet and keep his mouth covered, preventing Mary Shaw from exploiting a scream. Meng Zu gave him priest-blessed Tiger Knuckles so he could defend himself against dark creatures if necessary 9 10.
Escape from Mary Shaw
After leaving the theater, Sam travelled with Meng Zu's group toward Sault Ste. Marie. He learned that the blessed Tiger Knuckles could harm supernatural creatures and protect ordinary people, though Meng Zu warned that obtaining such blessings was not simple 10.
Sam and the others witnessed Jamie, Lisa, and Ella reveal their connection to Mary Shaw, then saw Meng Zu kill the transformed entities. The trauma left Sam and the other students vomiting as Jason, Mary Shaw, and Mrs. Voorhees continued the attack 10 11.
Meng Zu was prepared to teleport away when the Ancient One and Wong arrived through a portal. Wong destroyed the hostile spirits, allowing Meng Zu to complete Sam's rescue 11 12.
Return home
After returning to New York, Sam was reunited with his family at the Free Detective Agency. Meng Zu advised him and his friends to seek a church cleansing, as the vampires' bite and exposure to Mary Shaw had left dark and resentful energy in their bodies 13.
Personality
Sam is compassionate and loyal. He refuses to prioritize his own safety over Brian, Anna, and Amy, challenging Meng Zu's transactional approach to rescue work and pressing him to help additional captives as well 9.
He is frightened and inexperienced when confronted with vampires, puppets, and vengeful spirits, but he follows instructions during the escape and tries to help wake the other prisoners. He even imitates Meng Zu's rough slap-based method of waking unconscious people 8 9.
Equipment
- Priest-blessed Tiger Knuckles — Temporarily issued by Meng Zu during the escape from Ravensfair; capable of harming dark creatures and offering protection to ordinary humans 9 10.

- Meng Zu — Rescuer and hired protector. Sam initially mistakes him for a vampire, then relies on him to escape Ravensfair; their disagreement over leaving the other captives reveals Sam's stronger sense of responsibility 8 9.
- Brian, Anna, and Amy — Sam's friends and fellow kidnapping victims. He refuses to leave Ravensfair without them 9.
- The Fox family — Sam's parents hired the Free Detective Agency after he disappeared and later paid the agreed rescue fee 3 13.
