Background / History

Tony was captured by the Ten Rings after a terrorist attack during a weapons demonstration trip to Afghanistan. Obadiah Stane had arranged the attack and secretly misdirected the U.S. military’s search efforts, while the Ten Rings kept Tony alive to force him to manufacture weapons. 20

During captivity, Tony and Dr. Ethan secretly constructed components for the Mark I armor. Ethan had saved Tony’s life, and Tony carried the First-Generation Miniature Arc Reactor in his chest. 21

Personality

He is also fiercely loyal. Tony refuses a safer escape when it would leave Ethan behind, because Ethan saved his life; he is willing to pay heavily to ensure Ethan is extracted with him. 22
