Background

As a young Gastly, Gengar was injured by other Ghost Pokémon and saved by a human girl who gave it herbal medicine and fruit. The experience shaped its unusually compassionate view of humans, despite the hostility of other Ghost-types. 85

A thousand years before the main story, Gengar was drawn to an island by the Ghost Plate. Ancient humans accused it of bringing disease and bad luck, then sealed it away; Gengar later learns that Aura Guardian Aaron also sealed the Ghost Pokémon gathered around the Plate to stop them from harming humans. Gengar's soul survived by fusing with the sealing jewel's power, leaving it bodiless and trapped for centuries. 20 84 402

The jewel eventually reaches Hu Yang, whose contact with it triggers nightmares. Gengar reveals itself through a prank, threatens Hu Yang into completing three tasks, and offers information about hidden treasure. Hu Yang soon exposes the bluff behind its threats when Gengar fails to hold ice cream, prompting Gengar to reveal its spiritual state and imprisonment. 19 20

Hu Yang allows Gengar to remain with him under three conditions: it must stop pranking others, stop giving him nightmares, and obey him while he works toward fulfilling its wish. Gengar keeps the agreement and begins guiding Hu Yang toward the ruins containing its body. 21

After Gengar is manipulated into its Grudge Form in the ruins, Hu Yang refuses to abandon it even when it attacks him. Cramorant defeats Gengar without killing it, allowing the possession to fade. Gengar regains its body, accepts Hu Yang's invitation to travel together, and chooses not to punish the island's current inhabitants for ancient crimes. 83 85

Appearance

Gengar normally has a round, floating dark-purple body, red eyes, pointed ears, short spikes, and a broad grin. Its first appearance is deliberately theatrical: it disguises itself as Hu Yang's face before returning to its ordinary form. 19

Personality

Gengar is mischievous, theatrical, and proud of its ability to frighten people. It initially judges humans through the trauma of its imprisonment, but objects strongly when Hu Yang treats it as inherently dangerous simply because it is a Ghost-type Pokémon. 19 28

Behind its intimidation is profound loneliness. Its inability to eat, touch objects, or freely leave the jewel leaves it vulnerable and childlike; it becomes visibly attached to gifts, food, its scarf, and Hu Yang's companionship. 20 21 63

Its bond with Hu Yang steadily changes its view of humanity. Gengar resists the Ghosts urging it toward revenge, forgives Aaron largely because of Hu Yang, and chooses not to harm innocent descendants of the people who imprisoned it. 83 85 402

Gengar can also be emotionally insecure. It worries when Hu Yang gives it less attention, seeks reassurance after nightmares, and later tells Hu Yang that the team wants more time with him outside their Poké Balls. 146 186 282

Ghost Physiology

Gengar can separate its spirit and body, allowing it to shift between intangibility and physical existence. Its original Spirit Form was an abnormal, incomplete version of this ability because its body was sealed elsewhere. 20 50
