Physical diversity
Pokémon range from small, harmless creatures such as Caterpie and Skwovet to ancient predators and Legendary Pokémon capable of reshaping weather, land, sea, or time itself. Prehistoric Pokémon are portrayed as larger, more aggressive, and more instinct-driven than many of their modern descendants; ancient Aerodactyl hunt in coordinated, violent flocks. 3 362
- Pokémon may possess elemental abilities such as fire, water, Psychic power, electricity, Dragon-type energy, or Ghost-type abilities.
- Psychic- and Ghost-type Pokémon can demonstrate exceptional supernatural abilities, including Teleport, Confusion, invisibility, memory-related powers, and telepathy. 88 350

Individuality

Evolution and Autonomy
Evolution is not universally treated as mandatory or desirable. Pokémon can resist it, delay it, or pursue growth through training instead.
- Magikarp triggers evolution three times but uses Endure to suppress it each time, demonstrating unusual willpower and a deliberate refusal to become Gyarados. 127
- Piplup halts its own evolution into Prinplup with Endure because it wants to remain in the form it had when it met Hu Yang. Hu Yang supports the choice by giving it an Everstone and Eviolite. 489

Hu Yang introduces an alternative model to an injured prehistoric human: Pokémon are not creatures to be controlled, but potential friends capable of mutual aid. He uses harmless Caterpie as an example of a species humans could approach through food, trust, and cooperation. 362
An ancient mural beneath Mt. Coronet later depicts a mysterious figure teaching early humans how to coexist with Pokémon, beginning with gentler species. The event becomes remembered as a divine intervention in humanity’s early history. 363
Modern partnerships
Modern Trainers commonly battle, travel, train, and live alongside Pokémon. Strong bonds can influence growth, battle performance, emotional stability, and Mega Evolution. 154 284
However, the setting also depicts exploitation:
